RE: Calipari: Without NCAA change, 'we need to separate from them'
Right now Division I has a crazy amount of diversity.
You've got 10-15truly elite programs for whom money is no object.
You've got another 20-30 who can't quite keep up with them but they are big time in money and support.
Then you have the rest of AQ schools who are basically there because of the good fortune of being in the right place at the right time. Cut off from the largesse of their elite conference brothers are Boise, Houston, Cincinnatti, financially.
Then you've got the serious non-AQ programs that can compete in one or both of football and basketball with all but top 10-15 programs night in and night out.
Then there is the next group that is just below them and tend to be regularly competitive in their league and can compete regularly with bottom third of the AQ.
After that you've got a group that has aspirations but lack the resources or focus to go all-in.
Then you've got schools that really don't even want to be Division I but booster/alumni pressure or the desire to use revenue sharing to fund athletics keeps them in Division I.
Those bottom two tiers are the real danger in Division I. They are the ones who are always looking for the NCAA to adopt yet another cost-cutting measure. They want to be competitive by throttling the pack leaders as the NFL, NBA, and NHL do.
The NCAA environment is closest to MLB or international club soccer where roster limits are about the only limitations placed. The difference is the Manchester United's and New York Yankee's of college athletics don't throw their vast resources at player salaries, they put it in buildings and coach salaries.

Again, we do this already when Montana has a great season and recieves a high seed for their subdivisions playoff nobody says "but why don't they get a Sugar Bowl Bid?"
Because Montana chose to be FCS in the 70s when the last new divisions were created and have repeatedly declined opportunities to move up. They weren't told that for no reason they are no long allowed to be at the top level. The last time a new subdivision was created there were standards set and if as a league or a school you wanted to meet them you could and if not you moved down. That's much different than just saying us 5 are creating a new division and the rest of you can't be a part of it.

The graduation rate is going to be a killer for Kentucky eventually. The NCAA does have standards for graduation rates and academics. That's what kept UConn out of the NCAA tourney not too long ago...
I think our guys are doing a lot better than the public perception, as far as grades as they're in school, and the initiative to come back and complete coursework. There is a big drive for the guys to come back on their free time, matter of fact, Jodie Meeks just got here a couple days ago; some are more aggressively doing it than others, but I think steps have been made by every single guy that's left early for the league under Calipari, with one sole exception, who couldn't get out of school quick enough apparently.
GPA has been very good almost every semester of his tenure as well, again there's been maybe one guy that's dragged along and wasn't interested in class that I know of, everyone else has done pretty great work, it's been a great positive, because there wasn't as huge a factor in classwork in the past, some kids didn't take class too seriously. This staff is very on top of the academics of the team, coach and team has a book club and do lots of study, it's very cool stuff but we don't hear much about it unless you're right there, it obviously isn't headline news in the sports world. That's usually "Cal is Satan, he singlehandedly created the one and done rule, he holds a gun to kids' heads and makes them leave school when they're begging to stay, he must be cheating, Robert Morris LOL", etc etc. :)
If what you're saying is accurate, then Kentucky may be able to avoid UConn's fate of being shut out of the post season. But that still remains to be seen. Only time will tell...

If a student is in good standing when they head off to the pros, it doesn't count against the school.

Since he's coming from a basketball perspective, he may be thinking Split = all division 1. Or at least 1/2.

It should IMO. But I'm old fashioned. I think you should only go to college if you plan to get a degree. If you aren't there for the degree, you shouldn't be there at all...
