if go to BE- 2 million exit fee, 3.5-4 million tv money- net 1.5-2 million

Also, like what Redman said, wouldn't they announce all 5 at the same time then, just teams 4 and 5 coming in next year? In a way, the year of entry has nothing to do with it at all.

If the A-10 teams were covering the exit fees themselves, then I would agree. However, the indications are that the C7 are going to cover the exit fees for the teams leaving for 2013 out of their own pockets in order to start the league ASAP and avoid any legal wrangling. They don't want to deal with Xavier and Butler challenging those exit fees - the C7 just wants to have that problem go away immediately. As a result, it's money out of the pockets of the C7 regarding these exit fees, so yes, paying out $8 million to the A-10 as opposed to "only" $4 million is a material amount.

And I think we'll end up seeing teams 4 and 5 announced shortly (if not immediately with the first 3) in order to comply with the A-10 notice period. It's not a massive amount, but it's still money that the C7 would rather not have to pay if they don't have to.

I completely disagree with your interpretation of that ESPN story, but it is what it is on that front. You want to hold out hope that Fox is going to force in VCU. I get it. Who knows - maybe that will happen. (I wouldn't bet on it, but I'll allow that nothing is final until it's final.) However, what you're hoping for is coloring what you're reading in this particular case.

I think the fox dynamic is something that can't be ignored. I could see Fox wanting the Richmond area for the Virginia angle(remember, Virginia right now doesn't have FSN access)- so that could be either Richmond or VCU. I could see Fox doing anything to get Gonzaga.

The fact is the story did change. Last week made it seem like it was 99.99% decided who the teams are. If you read the story this week for the first time not knowing the back story, could you say at all that it was 99.99% decided? I don't.

Yes, since they are making their announcement today I would say it's decided.

the McMurphy article was updated this morning:
According to an exiting Big East source, the new league still has to pursue expansion, conduct a commissioner search, draft league bylaws, and complete fall championship planning. Thursday's announcement is the finality of the exit.

So EPIC FAIL on your post there bud......

I'm still not seeing where the story has changed or that it was "99.99% decided" last week. Are you falling right into the "parsing a technicality in an article as proof that the opposite will happen" trap of Old Big East posters that I just mentioned? The aggregate of stories on the Big East have all been stating "Xavier and Butler are locks immediately, Creighton might be in for 2013, Dayton and SLU are likely for 2014." You're just reading way too much into the wordsmithing (and as someone that has asked McMurphy directly to clarify language before, he can write things that can be interpreted in different ways depending upon your viewpoint, so getting hung up about the word "likely" just boggles my mind). The wordsmithing of one particular article does NOT invalidate the overarching storyline of what has happened at this point. There was neither a sea change that said that SLU and Dayton were locks last week nor was there a sea change today that said that they're up in the air today. They have had the same "likely" status all along.

Believe me - if someone other than Dayton or SLU was being legitimately considered or the Big East was seriously considering just staying at 10 teams, then that would be *news* that would be *clearly* reported by McMurphy or whoever else is covering this story. This ain't something that reporters want guessing games about - they want to break that story if the C7 are changing their minds about expansion.

Maybe the presidents dont want to screw over a bunch of schools they share a city with? Maybe the C7 dont want to completely screw over the A-10 with no time to get their own affairs in order? Those are all legit reasons to wait 1 year for the last 2 teams.

If I had to guess, the reason you only see three teams announced is, if you are not adding a new team right now, no point in announcing right away. Do what you need to do, get those logistics down, and go from there. Besides if you later announe the second wave, it gies you another round of press.

As far as why wait to add teams, well in addition to the financial aspects pentioned above, it makes more sense to add teams by piece, so that it feels like an expansion and not a merger (see the old big east football schools). Add three teams, from essentially three different conferences (Butler was only in the A-10 for one year), so it feels like a real expansion, and add the other two in a year or two. Plus it gives you the added benefit of allowing the next two teams, presumably Dayton and Saint Louis, have a year to shine with Xavier and Butler gone. And last but not least, if VCU makes another big run, or if Gonzaga finally makes it to the Final Four or more, it gives you one last chance to reevaluate both. Since there was no need to add the other two RIGHT NOW, why do it.

I mention Gonzaga again because while they do not fit in any way geographically, if they make another run, and they are still interested, you really have to consider it again. Then you decide. Hell they might go for 14, and add all four. I don't know. I'm just saying no point in making the decision of the next two now, when you don't need to, even if you have a strong idea of who it is you want.

Please don't be like the posters on the "Old" Big East board that have to go through the following cycle on every story that they don't want to be true: (1) reflexively discrediting the author and/or publisher of the applicable news article as (a) biased against the conference and/or (b) an inaccurate rumor-mongerer, (2) saying "it's not final, things can change, and no one has announced anything", (3) parse some vague qualifier or technicality in such article as "proof" that the opposite of what's being reported will happen, (4) deny that the news that they don't want to hear is happening, (5) deny it again by saying "It's not final!", (6) deny it about 20 more times, (7) go into a massive meltdown when the news that they don't want to hear is officially confirmed after denying it for days/weeks/months.

Is there a chance something different might happen here? Sure, in the sense that anything is possible in conference realignment. However, the likelihood of some type of March surprise is less than 10%. The only realistic variable is whether spot #12 goes to Dayton or Richmond (with SLU being a virtual lock at #11). The wild cars that I think that you're hoping for (e.g. VCU, Gonzaga) simply aren't likely going to come to fruition. You can hold out hope just like the Old Big East posters constantly like doing (until they feel like they got smacked in the face with bad news that the rest of the world with clear and logical eyes knew had been coming for a long time), but I think you're smart enough to know what's realistic here compared to what you personally want.

I think, much like what Title said if there was consensous- you'd see 12 in the league next year. What sense does it make going 10 then 12 next year at all? To save 2 teams exit fees(which would be mroe than made up in the new league)?

And the fact remains- ESPN has changed their story from forgone conclusion to just leading candidates. That's a HUGE difference.

No it doesnt, because they are still the leading candidates! VCU didn't come flying off the top turnbuckle with a Macho Man Randy Savage elbow drop on top of Dayton and is now a leading candidate. Yeeeeesh

When the heck did I meniton VCU? Give it a break....

Last week- forgone conclusion of the 5
this week- leading candidates. Means there is still a lot of deciding to do and nothing decided at all.

You may want the Tramel 5 railroaded in, but the articles posted late last night and today don't support that at ALL.

Im sorry, if not Dayton and St. Louis who would YOU think gets in? Don't insult my intelligence stever.

I'm certain that St. Louis is #11, could be Richmond rather than Dayton for #12. Market wise it makes more sense to go with a 6th East Coast Market rather than a virtual duplication of Xavier's market. (Although I'm not a media exec.) Then it gives a nice even split of 6 East Coast schools and 6 Midwestern Schools.

Divisions aren't going to come into play so a geographic balance isn't necessary. Also Dayton to Cincy is farther than Boston to Providence. Other have posted the ratings that college BBall in general gets in the Dayton market as well as the surrounding area in which Dayton fans encompass. Dayton has the support in the seats on on the TV that Fox really likes.

I'd argue with all 3 final four games, the Dayton ratings had more to do with who was in those games than anything else. I mean, Kentucky, Louisville, and Ohio St. Now, if it was say a great rating for a Kansas/UCLA game- that'd be one thing.

Seeing as how both conferences (the A-10 and the CAA prior) both had ESPN contracts of sorts, if Dayton was grabbing that many more ESPN telecasts than VCU or Richmond, it more or less undemermines any argument you can make that VCU is more valubale to TV. Despite what you've said about VCU being so much better than Dayton and STL the past decade, why is Dayton still getting more TV time? O

h and also, when you see the NCAA ratings, the numbers reflect near the same. Here are the ratings from last year, courtest of tvnewscheck.com

Championship
(Kentucky over Kansas)

Homes Rating Share
National 12.3 20
Louisville 51.1 66
Kansas City 39.2 55

Cincinnati 29.8 44
Indianapolis 19.7 32

Knoxville 19.7 28
Nashville 19.6 28
Memphis 18.9 27
Dayton 17.9 29
Columbus, OH 17.6 27
Greensboro-HP 16.7 26

Final Four Game 1
(Kentucky over Louisville)

Homes Rating Share
National 8.4 17
Louisville 48.4 74
Cincinnati22.7 40
Columbus, OH 22.2 39
Dayton 18.8 32
Indianapolis 16.6 32

Kansas City 16.3 34
Knoxville 16.1 26
Nashville 15.9 29
Memphis 14.5 24
Greensboro-HP 14.1 24

Final Four Game 2
(Kansas over Ohio St.)

Homes Rating Share
National 9.6 17
Columbus, OH 36.9 56
Louisville 28.9 44
Kansas City 28.1 48

Dayton 26.3 40
Cincinnati 25.5 40

Cleveland 20.3 34
Indianapolis 18.5 31
Greensboro-HP 14.9 23
Knoxville 13.9 21
Nashville 13.1 22

Note that Lexington, KY is high on this list too, but it's not large enough to be an overnight rated market, but is a bit over an hour from Xavier, and 90 mins from Dayton.

Bold - New or potential Big East cities
Underline - neighboring cities

I'd argue with all 3 final four games, the Dayton ratings had more to do with who was in those games than anything else. I mean, Kentucky, Louisville, and Ohio St. Now, if it was say a great rating for a Kansas/UCLA game- that'd be one thing.

Isnt there a post for all things VCU? This is getting out of hand

stever20 - In 2010 (the Duke/Butler/MSU/WVU Final Four year), Dayton was ranked #6 in NCAA Tournament viewing.

Dayton is consistently one of the strongest college basketball markets in the country. That's the entire reason why the NCAA has made it the permanent host of the First Four along with awarding them first/second round NCAA Tournament games on top of that. Few of the biggest markets would sellout games with those events going back-to-back, yet Dayton does it easily. It's not just a market on paper - people actually watch games there and buy tickets en masse.

Right but the question becomes do they already have that market with Xavier and Butler already fairly close by in- and then build with the Richmond market(Richmond or VCU)?

I dont care what the viewership is in the Dayton area. They have won 2 NCAA Tourney games since 1984. 1984!. They are a 2nd rate program that doesnt belong in the new Big East. I for one hope they are not included.

I always thought of Bloomington, Indiana as College Hoops Central. Basically make a 150-mile-radius circle around IU. This probably goes back to when "Hoosiers" came out. It's also got me psyched to have Butler and Hinkle as part of the conference.

"I play, Coach stays. He goes, I go."

Point being... adding another school in a college basketball hotbed isn't a bad thing (say, including Dayton). It'd be like the NHL returning to Quebec City.

Good first post.

Too bad they are also in the top 30 in attendance and would be 3rd in the new league behind Creighton and Marquette.

Yep totally agree. If they cared so much about basketball, how can their program be so inept?

I'm sorry but this OBSESSION with attendance is a flipping JOKE. I don't give a flip if they are 100th in attendance if they can play basketball. We need schools that can play basketball at a high level. PERIOD.
