Too many of those top 50 RPIs last season were in CUSA which doesnt really count to people outside of CUSA.

Um...in 06-07 Menphis went 31-3 losing @ zona, @ ut and ga tech. Then won something like 25 in a row.
Memphis lost at Home late in the season to UTEP lost two other CUSA games and finished out of the picture in maui.

any video/audio of this exchange?
I agree with others, if the SEC wants to play us and use our facilities, invite us to join.
We don't need to be "blind sided"

I watched it from WREG's website. You could barely hear the questions being asked by Calkins. To say they "went at it" as the thread title says, is a bit over the top.

Bottom line, we don't need to play UTK, there is nothing to gain

While I agree, we can't go around cancelling series like this with no likely replacement.
If we're the ones pulling the plug, we better have a damn good out of conference schedule next year.

Pretty lame if Nasal really threw out the fear question.
Seems begging for attention.
Can write column after column about the Big East woes or about not beating opponents ranked at the time...but unsure why Pastner, even if you are of the ilk who thinks he is in over his head and while he gets strong recruits and wins he will not be able to win really big, deserves to be treated disrespectfully.
Message board manners trend poor. Live questions should not.

they started it by ducking us in football in 04 and have yet to play that game.
I don't really like playing any SEC schools, but if UT wants to play football and basketball every year, I'd do it.

RE: Evidently Calkins and Pastner went at it in the press conference
Calkins is self-righteous it's sickening. He believes his opinions are absolute fact without ever substantiating them with any real evidence like a good journalist would.
He said Memphis' decision to remove UT from the schedule is "fear-based."
It's pretty simple: It does Memphis no good to play UT. I'm not sure what he doesn't understand about that.
Sports is such a simple subject. It all comes down to winning. If Josh was getting it done, no one would give two flips about whether we do or do not play UT. But since he's not winning, every move he makes is wrong: whether it's using flash cards, his substitution patterns or removing UT from the schedule.
Geoff isn't half as smart as he thinks he is. As Russell Crow said in Gladiator, his days of honoring himself will come to an end.
Bottom line: Josh needs to start beating Top 25 teams. UT traditionally isn't a Top 25 team. So removing them from the schedule isn't taking away an opportunity to beat a Top 25 team.

Huh?
What is shows is that the series is extremely popular.
Hell, the game in 2012 was a game where both teams were UNRANKED. And on a weeknight. Still drew 18,334.

Or it shows that Memphis will come out in droves against Louisville, Georgetown, Zona and even Miami, and that UT isn't an exclusive draw. Seems to me that another marquee matchup would draw just as much.

I could care less if we play UT. There are plenty of other schools out there to schedule. I dont understand the hoopla. They are just another school far as im concerned. Schedule another school from another conf and move on.

Better call Bowen and Josh with the news about plenty of other schools. Unless you mean more of what we are getting now.

Not necessarily disputing that, I am just noting that folks on this board make it sound like no one cares about the UT game. Yet attendance numbers belie that notion.
Unlike Xavier or Georgetown or most other games, it is good for the fanbase because people can travel to it. Louiville is the same, but other than that, there isn't much out there that is good for fans every year.

Dan O, there are plenty of schools out there to schedule. I cant say who they will replace with but SEC teams arent the only teams we can sched OOC.

There is no doubt that the UTK game is very popular with Tiger fans. To deny that is to live in a fantasy world.
That being said, I am fine with the UTK game going away and not playing any SEC schools in men's basketball, but those games need to be replaced with quality opponents from the "big 6" conferences or quality opponents from the non-"big 6". If the plan is to replace UTK with more creampuffs then Bowen and Pastner apparently are fine with pissing in the collective faces of the fanbase. Something needs to be done about these continual dreadful home schedules in men's hoops.

Calkins best point is "why can't you have both?" In 2007-08 Memphis had home games vs. Georgetown, Zona and UTK.
I don't think there is a rule that TN has to be REPLACED by another team. It could always be IN ADDITION.
The way things look, Memphis should be SO much better the next few years than TN. Just beat the hell out of them for five or six years and make them back out.
