Josh needs to find a better excuse than the recruiting angle
Any coach would tell you the same thing

UT will continue to get FB players no matter what either side does.

I don't know why it's a complete non issue with basketball in not playing UT. It would probably be fine as long as we had a home schedule but we don't and we haven't.
The Fact is that season ticket sales are down and so is actual attendance.
How many games have you attended?
The Grizzlies would love to have the attendance that the Tigers have.
There were more at the Tiger game Sunday night (16,455) against Loyola than the week night Grizzlie game I attended against the Phoenix Suns.
Especially downstairs in the good seats.

I say, be done with them. Josh is right. NO REASON to play them.
this is true. most TN fans east of the TN river hardly ever run into a Memphis fan. it's only west TN Vol fans that really hate Memphis basketball.
This would not surprise me in the least. It's probably not unlike how they're viewed outside the state of TN only reversed. I've met many Memphis fans around the country....or at least they're familiar with the program.....but, at least outside of east TN, UT basketball is stricly University of Texas.

Absent market research to the contrary, causation of lower ticket sales and attendance - if present - is likely mainly driven by the same factor affecting other markets (like the Titans). Folks are staying at home and watching on TV rather than spending money and time driving to and attending games.

RE: Evidently Calkins and Pastner went at it in the press conference
Calkins is still butt hurt from Coach Pastner's recent postgame comment about how great a show Sports File is now with Greg Gaston as host. Calkins is no longer on the show cause he wanted to be just host and was too lazy to help produce the show by lining up guests.

I think someone was going to ask the question anyways, in this case it just happened to be Calkins.

RE: Evidently Calkins and Pastner went at it in the press conference
UTK used to have some real fine basketball teams, but now it's all history because their coach left. I think she had dimensia or something.
As for the boys' team, I agree -- kick 'em to the curb. There's nothing there we couldn't improve upon, especially if you're talking about playing a weak bb team to get a shot at a good fb one. Might get the first part, but that second part isn't looking too promising these days. Goodbye and good riddance.

RE: Evidently Calkins and Pastner went at it in the press conference
I have NO interest in playing Tennessee as a non-conference scheduled opponent. In a tournament is enough if it happens.
There have to be 50 teams I'd rather see us face before them. It helps us in no way to schedule them and frankly if there is even a .01% chance this game hurts Memphis recruiting, I wouldn't even consider it.
That goes for Ole Miss as well. Both lame games I don't need to see.
Here are just a few games off the top of my head I'd rather see...Tell me one you disagree with or add more if you wish -- let's see where TN ends up
Villanova
Providence
Georgetown
St. Johns
Marquette
Baylor
ok state
OK
Texas
iowa
Wisconsin
Kentucky
kansas
ark
louisville
cinci
NC
NC STATE
Duke
FL. state
miami
temple
butler
ucla
notre dame
pitt
missouri
gonzaga
st. louis
xavier
dayton
wake
arizona
USC
Vandy
IOWA
Indiana
MICH
MICH ST.
Crieghton
I mean, the list just goes on and on....
Pastner just needs to beef up the schedule in general which happens next year due to the conference change.
Bottom line:
Cal showed us the recipe for success>
1. Schedule for the RPI -- non conference has to have name teams on it.
2. Play uptempo pressing style, focus on tough defense and taking the ball to the basket on offense(dribble drive)
3. Recruit at a high level
4. Define roles

Do you pay a grand a seat? Then please sit down. Students missing alone lowers it to 16.5. Do you know how many seats the Fedex building seats? It hasn't been close to full in every game including the Louisville game. There were four empty sections in the student section. Get real and stop smoking the pipe.
And people have stopped renewing for multiple reasons but bad basketball and a bad schedule rank right up there

RE: Evidently Calkins and Pastner went at it in the press conference
Maybe someone can answer this: why don't we play anybody ranked in the upper teens / lower 20's? Everyone says we should play Duke, Kansas, etc., but why do we not play NC State, OK State, PITT, Vandy, and teams like that? It seems like we used to play more good teams on that level - the ranked but not top ten level. I guess espn plays a major part, but our schedule seems to have become all or nothing. Its either a huge game or a buy game, there's not much in between.

Thats bologna.
The name Memphis gets you a handful of names people recognize on the schedule.

Love that CJP called out members of local sports media as being UT fans in disguise. Glad a Tiger coach finally has the balls to call out the pro SEC Memphis area sports media.

In 06-07, Cal played 5 top 50 teams (won 2). Last season Josh had 5 top 50 wins. The committee is looking at different things now, I guess.
