I was just thinking you could make some serious coin in devising a system that could barrier up a classroom in case something like this went down.

(12-16-2012 03:29 PM)UM2001GRAD Wrote:  The percentage of Americans that own a gun has significantly dropped in recent decades. People who choose not to own guns aren't going to be nearly as accommodating to gun advocates as those who do own guns, so that bodes poorly for those who want no restrictions on their guns. Lower numbers of guns will lead to lower numbers of gun deaths in America, but won't do much to prevent mass killings. Those events are much more the results of failure to address mental health issues than failure to have or enforce gun laws. Nevertheless, we will likely see new gun laws as a result of this killing. Americans are tired of seeing theaters, malls, schools, etc. shot up, so there will be some action taken.

Apparently this doesn't hold true in VA:
http://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews....b5.pdf.pdf

And while overall ownership may be in decline, gun sales/background checks are at all time highs. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/14...03513.html

Plus 47% admit to owning or at least possessing firearms which is still a ton of owners: http://www.gallup.com/poll/150353/Self-R...-1993.aspx

The anti-gun movement as the majority opinion is nowhere near what you project it is.

Maybe the reason that only a third of America owns guns are the gun laws and they're simply following them even if they disagree with them. I'm sure a lot of careful and responsible people in NY and CA want to have some sort of gun but can't becuase of the restrictions.

If you want to own a gun anywhere in American, you can. So your argument is garbage, as usual.

Maybe so, but the requirements are such that a person in State A might not be able to get one in State B. I'm sure it's a piece of cake getting a concealed carry permit in DC.

BTW, gun sellers will tell you the best thing that ever happened to their business was Obama's election.

We're talking about sheer gun ownership, not merely concealed carry handguns. Again, your argument is garbage.

Why is it with you there is never a correct answer to anything and everyone's opinion is wrong? But I guess gun ownership among the innercity black gang members make your point vaild.

I posted my idea earlier in this thread. It was solid.

According to your charts, violent crime in VA started decreasing after Obama won election in 2008

You can buy at a gun show or private seller w/o a background check.

Not a pistol, not in NC. You might could buy a shotgun or hunting rifle without a background check at a gun show in NC. It's a good thing criminals don't buy their guns at gun shows....

We can worry about the mental issues later, but as for a proactive move, find one or two teachers at each wing, make them go through training, and arm them. Idiots like RobertN will say, "but what if the teacher goes on a rampage?" To that I say, A) when's the last time that ever happened, and B) what prevents him/her from doing it now? We know the alternative to teachers NOT being armed now, don't we? Jonesboro, Ar., Columbine, Co., Sandy Hook, V.T., Red Lake, Pearl, Ms. (This was stopped by a teacher who had a firearm in his car), etc., etc., etc., etc., et http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sch...ted_States

And why are malls and schools the major targets these days instead of areas where citizens are known to be armed?

There's the logisitical consideration that people in elementary schools have short little legs, and malls are frequented by pear-shaped people. Neither group runs fast.

One well-placed .45 round would have stopped, deterred, or lessened the number of deaths from this tragedy that RobertN thinks is funny.

If only Adam Lanza's mother, the first victim, had been a gun owner, had a gun in her house, and had been trained on how to use it, then none of those children would have died. Oh wait....

Yeah, maybe more guns in close proximity to children isn't the answer. Gun advocates represent the lowest common denominator in this country, so there's no reason to listen to them.
