Thats the last amazing atmosphere i can remember.
Awesome game. Wasnt that the year of the NIT semis against UNC at Bartow? Another awesome game that I think ultimately got us our coach.
This is the game that ultimately got us our coach:

Agreed. I was just referring to how Haase turned down many interviews throughout his years as Roy's #1 guy. Had he not been to Bartow and seen the electricity during that game, he may not have come to UAB.

I know that Mississippi State was very interested in Haase. Had they known that Haase was even on UAB's radar...they would have pushed even harder. They were feeling out other candidates when UAB announced the hire. From what I understand, part of the Andy Kennedy play that happened during the coaching hire was to distract Mississippi State from who UAB actually wanted.

He told me it did, in the one conversation I've had with him.
And I approve of the Pink Underpants Dance, esp. as it now involves hot chicks. And it could be a lot worse - at least the strippers have decent bodies. It will be a long time before I recover from seeing the guy down at Troy in the red body suit.

From what I have read on the board and seen at the games I have been able to go to, the student section is not what it used to be like during the CMA days. During those games, we yelled the entire time often jumping up and down. There were never any problems with a DJ drowning us out because we never stopped cheering. We had creative chants and cheat sheets provided by Gang Green for each opponent. Those were the good ole days.

Does Gang green have any organizational structure like a president or committee? Do they or have they ever held meetings or use members to recruit other student members by publicizing?
Sorry I just have no idea how the student section is run, if it is at all. I would think that with the solid core of enthusiasts near and including the underwear guys we could turn this thing around fairly easily. Any thoughts?

It takes a lot to make me say WTF. The Pink Underpants dance was one thing. Then that stupid halftime dance debuted last year. Then the shake weight. And finally, the Bush/Cheney '04 banner. When does someone finally end the nightmare? The only positive is the upgrade in talent as Brother 58-56 mentioned.

A "President" is appointed by the UAB Marketing Department (Gang Green is a Marketing Department creation). Lately, this has meant that the President is a Marketing Intern, and all of the other Marketing Interns make of the "Gang Green Cabinet". Those would be the underwear guys.

Interesting, it used to be the UAB undergrad that demonstrated complete devotion to UAB athletics... That was less than 5 yrs ago.

Contrary to what many believe, it was always a Marketing Department thing. Sam Miller created it. However, they always did a good job of sort of putting it into the hands of the students and making it appear as organic as possible for sure.

I realize that Sam once put good students in charge, but I think a group of students also approached the marketing department about organizing Gang Green into the entity that it is now. I also know that several of the past presidents have been other majors than marketing.

All of the presidents have typically been paid as marketing interns (which, technically, they are), whether their major was marketing or not. That dates back to the beginning of the group. Sam directly chose all the presidents, but the presidents always picked their own cabinet...which usually included a lot of non- marketing interns and students that were just passionate about the teams.
When the stripping occurred...it became obvious to me that Gang Green was now more about putting on a show than getting butts in the seats. And that's not how it used to be. You can say what you will about Tyler and myself or anybody else that dressed up and talked trash...but we were constantly recruiting people to come to games and scream and yell their butts off.

As much as the student section at Legion Field is criticized, it seems to be twice as big, and at least as enthusiastic, as the section at basketball games. The glaring exception this year was the Memphis game, during which basically everyone in the stadium was rendered either silent, mouth agape, or pissed.
If you do an on-the-field-performance-to-student-section-quality ratio, the football student section is dominating.
Is this before or after halftime? Also, are you including the band?
Definitely before halftime lol. The band being right there helps, and I think that's the main reason we aren't in the corner like we should be for optimal sound projection. There would either be a gap between the student section and the blob of people around the 50-yard-line, which would be a buzz kill, or the whole crowd would get more diffuse. The students can feed off each other's energy more when they're crammed into a smaller space, and you have to create that artificially at Legion Field. The band and the students feed off of each other too, and a lot of band alums come back and sit with the students.
I was right next to the student section in 2010 and 2011, so I got to experience the Troy and Southern Miss games right in the middle of that. The atmosphere honestly was pretty special for those games.
