Triplett? He could play. Just chose not too at times.

Sonnenberg was OK and a 7' high jumper.

Andy Fisher - first team All-MAC as senior, IIRC

Bob Conroy- pretty good guard and a good hurdler on the track team when I was there. John Hodak had three good games one year.

Jim Ray from Woodward - his wife was my second grade teacher.

Now I'm not sure if he went to Woodward or not - I think so.

RE: Top Local Mens Basketball Players UT
Of course none of the kids on this board remember Cal Christainson from Macomber

Cal was born on June 6, 1927, to Lawrence and Tinnie Christensen in Toledo, Ohio. As a boy, his first regular job was delivering the Toledo Blade. Later, he worked summers at Champion Spark Plug and the Toledo Parks Department. It was during his junior year at Macomber High School that Cal was introduced to the game of basketball. He loved the game and worked hard to acquire the skills that led him to make the All City Team the following year. Cal graduated from Macomber High School in 1945 and was drafted into the army later that year. After his discharge in late 1946, he began attending the University of Toledo in January 1947. Though he arrived in mid-season, Cal made the basketball team and played all of the remaining games of that season. Cal played basketball for UT from 1947-50, later being amongst the first inductees into the UT Sports Hall of Fame in 1977. After college, Cal was a fifth round draft pick and started his professional basketball career playing for the Tri-City Blackhawks. Later he played for the Milwaukee Hawks and the Rochester Royals. All told, he played professional basketball from 1950-1955.

I remember him being one of the announcers for Toledo basketball games on TV. Cal Christianson and Gary Mortimer - who I think were after Orris Tabner (classic name). Their seemingly most commonly used phrase - "he drives to the basket and is cut in half..." to describe a foul.

JOHN BRISKER was pretty good.

A little on the bizarre side, but pretty good.

I guess I was too far removed from Toledo in HS to qualify but my HS did retire my jersey. Some people think it was because Ohio High School Player of the Year and Ohio State star Jeff Miller wore it a few years before I donned it but I know better.

Food

A link from that article went to another on mysterious disappearances. About every third or fourth person on the list, my thought was, they became food.

Those names bring back the memories, Wasnt there a 7'0 footer that played at UT, my Dad would talk about him, perhaps in the 60's?

Doug Hess. The only 7' player in UT history. Don't think he was a Toledo HS product, though.

He was not from Toledo area HS. Dale Geistler was - and he had a great game against Bob Lanier one year. We could put "the footer" and Geistler in the game and have 7'0" and 6'9" on the front line in 1970.

My favorite Doug Hess memory is when he committed a foul and as he was walking to take his spot along the key for the foul shot, the ref told him to raise his hand to signal the foul was on him. He did - and promptly got his hand tangled in the net.
