I agree recruiting wise, he couldn't get even the best Illinois players to stay instate. As far as big names goes he is on top of the list. He'll definitely need help recruiting DFW players.

Then again, his Final Four team at Illinois was built around Dallas-area talent.

Recruited by this guy, if I remember correctly.

Bruce Weber took the job at K-State. Not sure who is next on the list.

Marquette assistant Tony Benford and Duke assistant Chris Collins are both under consideration from what I have heard. I don't know if they are top candidates but we'll see.

Rick Majerus is an excellent coach. Certainly better than some of the other names being tossed about.

I live in STL and the man is a living legend in the Gateway City because of how he has turned the SLU program around.

KL, I am guessing that some of those things may be true, but when RM was at Utah, the university president looked into some player complaints and ultimately cleared RM of any wrongdoing.

He hasn't had any issues at SLU...in fact, the players and assistant coaches as well as those who cover the team in the media all speak very favorably of him.

But that does not make a good Deadspin article.

I know that the Allred story is false, though. UofU investigated it and found that he never said it. Yet, Deadspin decided to include it, which does cast doubt over the rest of the article.

Regardless, none of this odd behavior has shown itself during RM's time at SLU

He has done wonders at both Utah and SLU. Seems like the kind of coach that can utilize the resources in Dallas/SMU and turn around the program. I hope we can land him, and I hope he doesn't suffer any more health issues during his tenure if he does choose to come to SMU.

That's interesting. Majerus was complaining about SLU's travel in the A10 (wanted them to move to the Missouri Valley), what will he have to say if he takes a Big East job in Dallas?

Reggie Theus is the best college coach not in charge of a program. The guy is a wizard.

Reggie was a Pitino assistant. Very good. Not sure if already mentioned before.

Getting Majerus would be a helluva coup for SMU.

RE: Possible SMU basketball coach
Wikipedia seems to think that Majerus is the current head coach at SMU. Funny, because I haven't heard anything to confirm this. In fact, the info that has come out in the media has been conflicting ("Majerus turned SMU down" was this morning's story; "SLU grants SMU permission to speak to Majerus" was this afternoon's story).

RM is 64 years old. And with his health issues, that may be a hard 64.

I like him as a coach. But for those of us wanting a "young, aggressive, energetic" coach, this is not quite what we were thinking. We certainly could do a lot worse. He is a winner.

He's a winner, and can serve as a 4-5 year transition to get SMU up to speed much quicker than a team like DePaul, which has had its head beat in for years and years since joining the BE.

Plus, who would get more local media coverage, Rick Majerus or Trent Johnson?
