That's what they said about Jimmy Tubbs, too.

To be fair, they said DISD coaches liked Jimmy Tubbs. They never said anything about AAU coaches liking him

Good grief, now the Dallas Morning news is saying we are going after Buzz Williams.

Actually, it would be a good fit. While I don't think Buzz would leave for SMU, it does make some sense. He is a very religious guy. Its close to his family and to where his wife and he grew up. The AD at SMU likes to make big, splashy hires. MU has a new AD and a new President, so while Buzz has given the outward appearance that he is very happy, it is possible he could be looking for a change. However, it would be a somewhat curious move for Buzz to go to another BE school, just when the program is starting to get on a roll.

RE: Possible SMU basketball coach - CalallenStang - 03-20-2012 03:08 PM

Buzz is a Texas guy. And that would be the only reason why he would even consider leaving Marquette for SMU. Seriously...that is the extent of it.

The new coach will be paid more than June Jones who makes $2,000,000 a year. Funny that the basketball guys are wanting to trump the football donors.

Makes my $1,000 donation look like chump change.

What about the New Mexico coach?

Here's a good article from this morning.

While throwing $2 million at a coach is great and all, SMU still has a lot of work to do as far as attendance and building their basketball back to respectability. If Baylor could do it. I don't see why SMU can't.

SMU needs to get serious. If you're talking $2 mil for a coach, throw it at Randy Bennett or Dave Rose and see. Don't waste time on Buzz.

RE: Possible SMU basketball coach - ULdave - 03-20-2012 07:13 PM

It is great that SMU is making a real effort at improving basketball. Unless Buzz Williams has a great personal desire to return to the state of Texas, I can not see them pulling him away from Marquette which is a great established program.

RE: Possible SMU basketball coach - Pony94 - 03-20-2012 07:16 PM

Hope we don't get another Doh turd to open a new $40,000,000 facility

Basketball wise as Matt is one of the nicest guys you will meet

It was interesting reading the article that suggest that SMU's path to success should be to recruit the home town a la Memphis.

On that point I would disagree. I would advise them to get a Big East guy, who knows the Big East recruiting grounds (New York, Philly) and convince some of those kids, that want to leave home but get seen at home, that Dallas is a nice place to put down roots. When you go after the hometown kids (no matter what hometown your from) those kids see all the problems, hear all the negative talk, and understand all the limitations that come with joining the program. Kids from outside will see more of the opportunity in a program but won't have the built in concerns from familiarity.

If SMU builds a great program, they will get the home town kids. If they try to get the hometown kids to make a great program they will only be chasing their tail.

Wish I had $3 million sitting around for a buyout

RE: Possible SMU basketball coach - CalallenStang - 03-23-2012 11:23 AM

From what I understand, the buyout was a problem. And then the boosters stepped in and said it wasn't a problem. Now the only issue is whether or not Buzz wants to leave Marquette for a complete rebuilding job. I seriously doubt that he ends up on the Hilltop

RE: Possible SMU basketball coach - CalallenStang - 03-23-2012 11:27 AM

Also, I wish that Armen and EJ at PP would sit on their info a little better before taking it to Twitter; it shouldn't be common knowledge what we are and aren't prepared to do
