Why?
Mainly because i'd like to think an open atheist/agnostic could get elected president. I would not vote on that reason alone, obviously.
I doubt an open atheist or agnostic could get elected to the office of president in this country. A 2007 USA Today/Gallup poll showed that less than 50% of Americans would vote for a well qualified atheist candidate for president. 95% said they would vote for a Catholic with similar qualifications, 92% would vote for a Jewish candidate, and 72% would vote for a Mormon candidate.
There is only one congressman who is openly atheist, and he served for 18 terms before he stated his lack of belief publically.
This was kind of why I said I would love to have an atheist/agnostic president. It bothers me that you seemingly have to believe in a deity to be elected president. I would love to see that not be the case.

Seems your the one laying low, probably naked and surrounded by farm animals, spewing your hate.

Good post and pretty much why I don't consider Obamanijead a Christian. The whole debacle with his America-hating /Racist Church/ Minister in Chicago pretty much put the nail in the coffin for me about him being a true Christian.
Factor in that he is the epitome of a hypocrit, and that also seals the deal on his fake Christianity, for me.
Why does it matter? Last census I saw had 72% of Americans declaring themselves as Christians. If their Faith truly matters to them, then their President's "Faith"/Religion might matter too including political issues that involve their Faith (Healthcare Mandate/paying for abortions/Forcing the issue on the Catholic Church/etc). Not saying it necessarily does matter to all of them, but common sense says it might matter.

Again, what the hell does religion have to do with the major issues we face: record unemployment, massive spending, energy prices soaring out of control. I could care less if the man was a raging atheist if he was a success on any of these important points. How does a candidates religious preference go towards solving any of those real world problems???
Religion and media-invented narratives about non-social issues like contraception are such a waste of time and take focus off the REAL failures of Obama (massive spending, debt and defecit increase, unemployment, overregulation of businesses and employers, the list goes on and on). Give me a candidate who can focus and fix those things, and I don't give a sh*t whether he's mormon, shinto, or prays to a Justin Bieber doll.

The guy claims to be a Christian. Yeah, sure. He also claimed to be committed to transparency. He also ran against Bush's record of overspending and claimed to be so committed to fiscal responsibility that he would cut the deficit in half by now.
Here is my take:
If paying lip service to Christianity weren't a political requirement in this country - I really don't think you would find many democrat politicians (and some republicans) who would continue the charade.
Mark - trust me, you have your atheist/agnostic pres right now. But you should really consider it, IMO, as one more reason to realize how little integrity and how fundamentally dishonest the guy really is.

What ever is an agnostic Libertarian (like me) to do? Well, until the Libertarians put up a viable candidate, I guess I'll just have to choose to vote for whichever of the two big party candidates I think is the lesser of the evils. I'll be glad to see a more moderate candidate like Romney win the nomination. If Santorum wins, I'll have to swallow very hard to vote for him.

I'm pretty much the same way... and there is zero chance I'll vote for Santorum. If he were to win the nomination (he won't) I'd probably just not vote.

So Chatter you're saying he is only pretending to be a christian to get votes. Well no ****, he is after all a politician.
One more time, when politician is no longer a career, then this country may head in the right direction. Until then, Democrat Republican, doesn't really matter, they are only going to do what it takes to get re-elected. They won't do what needs to be done until it is waaaay to late.
Chatter, if you would like to talk hypocrites, stop claiming to defend the Constitution and then **** all over it by condemning our president for possibly not being christian.

I certainly can't say I trust Obama, but I'm inclined to give everyone the benefit of the doubt on this and take his comments at face value. He says he's a Christian and I accept that.
However, I did find his use of the Gospel of Luke to justify his tax policy as extremely cynical and disingenuous. In my opinion, it's offensive to both Christians and non-Christians alike. Of course, there wasn't a peep about it from the libs or much in the MSM - they're all too busy scrutinizing Santorum's personal beliefs on birth control and excoriating the "Religious Right".

I believe he is a christian. I don't think he lives his life according to the bible 100%, but i doubt most christians do.
Do any of you think that since it appears romney will get the nomination, the goal is to try to make obama less christian so as to divide the christian votes between a mormon and a muslim?

It cracks me up reading your posts. It really does. It's like you think you're smarter than the rest of us and there is some intellectual awakening for all us in your comments, such as "one more time........" blah, blah, blah. Why do you feel the need to preach and convince us?
I make my comments and don't feel the need for anyone to agree with me........which they don't. And I could really give a crap.
Freedom of Speech allows me to insult the president, although he has far from acted like one. The same freedom of speech that allows MSNBC and other networks to distort the truth and blame everything on the rightwing.
Frickin' deal with it, dude.

Really these results are not surprising. Obama's religion has been a subject for demagogues for years. A more interesting poll would be how many of these people being polled recognize Romney as being Christian.

Alabama and Mississippi (apparently) voters have ruined my night. Most important issue to them is beating Obama, they overwhelming think Romney has the best chance to do so, and then they go in the booth and vote Santorum or Gingrich. That roar you just heard was from Democrats all across the country.
