Quote:More than half of Mississippi GOP voters say Obama is a Muslim, new poll suggests

by Chris Moody

More than half of likely Republican voters in Mississippi say they think President Barack Obama is a Muslim, according to a survey conducted by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic polling firm.

Fifty-two percent said that Obama practiced Islam, while just 12 percent said he was a Christian. Thirty-six percent said they were not sure.

Obama, whose father and stepfather both came from Muslim backgrounds, is a practicing Christian and was a member of Trinity United Church in Chicago before he was president.

The poll, conducted by telephone of 656 likely Republican voters in Mississippi on March 10 and 11, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

In Alabama, the same poll found that 45 percent of likely Republican voters believed Obama to be a Muslim and 14 percent said they considered him a Christian.

The group conducted the polling in advance of the Republican presidential primaries in Alabama and Mississippi, which will be held on Tuesday.

He's not a Christian, I'm sure of that.

As much as I dislike the clown, this kind of poll and debate over his religion is useless nonsense come November and is only going to distract from the issues that really matter in the election: Massive debt and the economy.

I'm curious Chatter, do you have a problem with him not being Christian?
I'd love to have an agnostic/atheist president, but Obama IS a Christian. Chatter does not define what being a Christian is.
Don't feed the crazy.
Being or not being a Christian is the least of my concerns. Just get him out of office.

And neither do you.

You have no direct connection to Obama's brain, therefore you have no idea if Obama is a Christian.

Mainly because i'd like to think an open atheist/agnostic could get elected president. I would not vote on that reason alone, obviously.

True enough. I can never know what religion any one is with 100% certainty other than my own. Not my girlfriend, my mom or sister. That said I feel comfortable that someone who has attended christian churches throughout his adult life and talks about his faith and the influence it has had on his life is not doing so as a con. Frankly I don't care either way though.

It would be interesting to say the least. IMO, I would rather an agnostic who doesn't let religion (or lack of religion as a lot of atheists do) then a Santorum where religion is brought up on almost every issue.

JFK actually hit it on the head (no pun intended) where he had to defend and explain the role his Catholicism would have on him as president and his view that it really didn't matter what he was because his views were his own private views and would not be imposed upon the nation. This is the same speech that makes Santorum "want to throw up"

Out of curiosity, if he isn't Christian, then what religion do you think he practices? Does it matter to you what religion the president is?

I doubt an open atheist or agnostic could get elected to the office of president in this country. A 2007 USA Today/Gallup poll showed that less than 50% of Americans would vote for a well qualified atheist candidate for president. 95% said they would vote for a Catholic with similar qualifications, 92% would vote for a Jewish candidate, and 72% would vote for a Mormon candidate.

There is only one congressman who is openly atheist, and he served for 18 terms before he stated his lack of belief publically.

Mississippi is one of the most uneducated states in the union. Hell I'm a democrat and can find stronger arguments against him then the endless cycle of muslim, birther, and teleprompter that SOME of you repubs spout. Some of you guys believe anything while others make some good points. There is definitely a line or divide that separates the party.
Sub, your an atheist and republican right? Is that considered not the norm a'la a black or gay republican?
I registered as a Democrat when I turned 18 and that has never changed. However, I have never been one to vote for a candidate just because there is a D next to their name. To your other question, yes the majority of atheists are Democrats.
Ya'll fell in to Chatter's trap again. I'll bet he is laying low, polishing up his mandate for hate.

Not shocking that a decent percentage of likely voters (656 in this case)
would think Obama is a Muslim. His given name was Barry Soetoro and then as an adult he changed his name to BHO, similar to Lew Alcindor and Cassius Clay who converted to that religion and changed their names to Muslim names.
David Koresh and his clan claimed to be Christians.
The West Baptist Church claims to be Christian.
I believe that Jim Jones and his followers claimed to be Christian.
The Klu Klux Klan uses crosses prominently in their activities, and I believe they claim to be Christian based.

However I do not consider any of these groups to truly be Christian.

In the same vein, Black Seperatist churches claim to be Christian....
