Pirtle Bird brings up some strong college memories. A bunch of us would pile into a car to go there for lunch on highland.

I took swimming lessons at Clearpool at 4 years old. The instructor told my mom she was wasting her money cause I was already swimming like a fish. LOL

I found this old postcard at an estate sale, and I keep it propped up on my desk during these miserably hot summer days, because just looking at it makes me feel cooler.

Not that many years ago, we had a choice of huge swimming pools and bathing beaches around town: Clearpool, Rainbow Lake, the Fairgrounds pool, and just across the state line, Maywood, the "Beach Within Reach" with its genuine white Florida sand beaches.

It's hard to believe that a place as Hades-hot as Memphis couldn't keep these pools open, but each one is gone.

If you didn't spend a 4th of July weekend swimming at Blue Lake, you missed out. Always a big weekend with live music and cookouts. Now it's just a private fishing hole with some great fishing when the river is at the right height.

RE: Memphis Landmarks
rainbow was our "home" pool until it closed, then we moved down to clearpool and if feeling frisky rolled all the way out to maywood. maywood was great except the water was so dang cold and my dad would pitch a fit when we came out because they would always slap a bumper sticker on the back of the car while you were swimming and he hated that. we were at dogpatch usa once and came back to find a sticker on his car. he went back inside and came back out with the manager who had to scrape the thing off while he watched. no telling what he threatened that guy with LOL
