After the auto bailout failed in the Senate ... true colors are starting to shine. The unions are livid at one group of people for blocking their chances at getting a bailout (for now), and that group would be senators from the South. Yup, the evil, anti-union South rears its ugly head. The evil Southern Senators are Mitch McConnell, Bob Corker and Richard Shelby. The UAW has gone as far to say that these senators are "representing the foreign brands" because their southern states are home to foreign automakers such as BMW, Honda and others. UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said, "They thought perhaps they could have a twofer here maybe: Pierce the heart of organized labor while representing the foreign brands." A local UAW president at a GM factory in TN said, "What this is, is the Southern conservative senators trying to destroy the United Auto Workers, trying to destroy unions ... It's a sad day in America when the senators turn their back on Main Street." Well last Friday was a sad day as well ... a day when the UAW turned its back on the automakers.

The real deal here is that the unions are concerned that if they don't get their auto bailout, it will look really bad for the organized labor movement. More and more people are realizing that a huge part of the problem with the Big Three is their unions. What possible excuse is there for paying people not to work? Google "jobs bank" and see what I'm talking about. If the union movement is undermined, they won't get their ultimate prize they have been waiting for: The Employee Free Choice Act. Now wouldn't that be a crying shame.

Meanwhile, I want you to check out this picture: 22 Pounds of UAW Rules and Regulations. If you really want to see what is wrong with the Big Three ... just look into these contracts.

One of the problems here is that so often it looks like these auto workers don't really know or appreciate who they're working for. Visit a Big Three assembly plant just around quitting time. Do you see workers streaming out of those plants with Ford, Chevrolet or Dodge jackets and ball caps on? Hardly any. What you do see is workers heading for their cars with jackets and hats emblazoned with the UAW logo and the name of their local. The union is paramount to them. Their actual employer? The enemy.

Oh .. and let's put this idea to rest that nobody wants to buy a car right now because these automakers might go bankrupt. I did. I bought a brand new Chevy Equinox last Friday. I needed a car that I didn't mind driving in the schmutz and could load up with stuff. I'll leave the other one under a cover until the sun shines and I can put the top down. Just doing my bit to help the economy. You see, it was I who picked the winner (my Chevy dealer) last week with my money, not the government. This is as it should be.

Really? He's authored books, including a couple on the Fairtax, has a nationally-syndicated talk show, and has a law degree.

What'chu got?

BTW, we people down here in 'da South generally put a "D" in knowleDge. Must be a northern thing, or maybe something with NIU.

Aren't the plants of foreign automakers filled with American workers?

The UAW seems to think that management should suffer, the investors should suffer and that they have some sort of God given right to prosper.

I thought that might be the case. At any rate, I stand by my comments about Ghosn. I'll be surprised if even he holds them together in this environment.

If he does, it will be a testament to his personality and innate ability, b/c when he leaves I think they'll crumble.

The biggest problem in the American auto industry is the fact that American cars were engineered more for speed, while foreign cars were engineered more for safety. The American auto industry thought that Americans wanted big, powerful cars, so that's what they built. And all their efforts went into making the cars that they thought the people wanted.

However, foreign auto manufacturers put more and more effort into making safer vehicles, and fully tested all the safety features on the German autobahn. They added other features, after the safety issue was resolved, that would make the cars appealing to the masses. As a consequence, they took over the market, because they made a better vehicle.

American auto manufacturers have put a lot of effort into catching up, and they have closed the gap. But it may have come too late to save them from this mess of their own creation...

It couldn't be that the Auto makers MARKETED the cars, creating a product that they knew they could mass market to dumb ass American consumer that would buy anything with a mostly naked, large busted bikini girl next to it.

People buy cars for speed, yes. They also buy them for fuel economy. Safety? I'm pretty sure "most" people don't shop for cars based on safety. Why? Because ALL have to pass the standards.

It's in the way you dress. The way you boogie down. The way you sign your unemployment check. You're a man who likes to do things your own way. And on those special odd-numbered Saturdays when driving is permitted, you want it in your car. It's that special feeling of a zero-emissions wind at your back and a road ahead meandering with possibilities. The kind of feeling you get behind the wheel of the Pelosi GTxi SS/Rt Sport Edition from Congressional Motors.

All new for 2012, the Pelosi GTxi SS/Rt Sport Edition is the mandatory American car so advanced it took $100 billion and an entire Congress to design it. We started with same reliable 7-way hybrid ethanol-biodeisel-electric-clean coal-wind-solar-pedal power plant behind the base model Pelosi, but packed it with extra oomph and the sassy styling pizazz that tells the world that 1974 Detroit is back again -- with a vengeance.

We've subsidized the features you want and taxed away the rest. With its advanced Al Gore-designed V-3 under the hood pumping out 22.5 thumping, carbon-neutral ponies of Detroit muscle, you'll never be late for the Disco or the Day Labor Shelter. Engage the pedal drive or strap on the optional jumbo mizzenmast, and the GTxi SS/Rt Sport Edition easily exceeds 2016 CAFE mileage standards. At an estimated 268 MPG, that's a savings of nearly $1800 per week in fuel cost over the 2011 Pelosi.

Even with increased performance we didn't skimp on safety. With 11-point passenger racing harnesses, 15-way airbags, and mandatory hockey helmet, you'll have the security knowing that you could survive a 45 MPH collision even if the GTxi SS/Rt were capable of that kind of illegal speed.

But the changes don't stop there. Sporty mag-style hubcaps and an all-new aggressive wedge shape designed by CM's Chief Stylist Ted Kennedy slices through the wind like an omnibus spending bill. It even features an airtight undercarriage to keep you and a passenger afloat up to 15 minutes -- even in the choppy waters of a Cape Cod inlet. Available a rainbow of color choices to match any wardrobe, from Harvest Avocado to French Mustard.

Inside, a luxurious all-velour interior designed by Barney Frank features thoughtful appointments like in-dash condom dispenser and detachable vibrating shift knob. A special high capacity hatchback holds up to 300 aluminum cans, meaning fewer trips to the redemption center. And the standard 3 speaker Fairness ActoPhonic FM low-band sound system means you'll never miss a segment of NPR again.

Best of all, the Pelosi GTxi SS/Rt is made right here in the U.S.A. by fully card-checked unionized workers and Detroit's famous visionary jet-set managers. Even if you don't own one, you can enjoy the patriotic satisfaction that you're supporting the high wages, good benefits, and generous political donations that are once again making the American car industry the envy of the world.

But why not buy one anyway? With an MSRP starting at only $629,999.99, it's affordable too. Don't forget to ask about dealer incentives, rebates, tax credits, and wealth redistribution plans for customers from dozens of qualifying special interest groups. Plus easy-pay financing programs from Fannie Mae.

So take the bus to your local CM dealer today and find out why the Pelosi GTxi SS/Rt Sport Edition is the only car endorsed by President Barack Obama. One test drive will convince you that you'd choose it over the import brands. Even if they were still legal.

I don't think I could go this far. There is a great deal of basic research that would never get funded because you can't make a business case for what you don't know. Yet in the end, people are happy it was done. I'll start w/ the maser as an example. PET Scans are another.

Now maybe there is room for agreement...people are willing to pay $X for basic research, w/ the understanding that it may cover anything from algae to z-mesons, and they concede those choices to SMEs. So they pay that tax willingly ( no longer forced theft in your venacular). Even so, people get squirrely about this. NASA funding is a great example. People love spin-off technology, they love the Hubble pix, but you'll always find some old geezer complaining that we could spend that money on new drug research.

Anyway, in my version of SCT I have to recognize that not all decisions the government makes will be my preferred ones. But living in a society means cooperating and compromising.

It is always so absolutely hilarious how Lib's turn everything around to suit Their Design so it Fits Their Needs at the Time.

Lib's say: "We want to take and take and take up too ~~~% of your Salary Earnings to pay for Our Social Programs".

Yet when they are Smart Enough, and yes, I give Harry Reid a round of Applause for this one, I would have never believed he had that kind of Heart or any Heart at all ..... but when they are Smart enough to Kill what is Dying and Suffering and let them try to Reorganize, you Lib's go Spastic.

But in the Exact same Tome, you write that: "Now the Congress wants to let the Big 3 Die so they can Support and Give the Welfare Drunks and Dope Heads more Money".

Well guys, you are the ones sitting on your Living Rooms, watching Joe Biden Actually say out of his Mouth, that "Paying Tons of Taxes is Patriotic" .... fighting Terrorism or any 'ISM is UnPatriotic, but PAYING TAXES is the New Marker for Measuring a Man's Patriotism !!!

Come on now guys ... you either want to Welfare and Socialize the Planet or you Don't, you can't have it Both Ways .... WHICH ONE IS IT ???

Tiger: Boeing isn't the Only International Company whose head is on the Chopping Block.

I have a Gigantic Paper Mill in a town about 12 Miles from me .... it used to Staff a Representative Employee Base of roughly 60% to 70% of my County ... they just laid of another 550 Employees 2 Weeks ago. They have closed plants all across the United States and had closed one Section of My Paper Mill and were going to Combine it with one in either Alabama or Georgia ... and now probably are not even going to make the move.

Oh they will still close the Section Down, they just won't move it to the other State.

Temple Inland Paper Industries NEEDS A BAILOUT Lib's !!!!! I don't want to see my Paper Mill Die in the Spring and it is dying fast .... no One Wants the Mill so it is Shut Down or rip it up for Scrap.

The place now has a Representative Employee Base of roughly 8% of my County. Why waste our time when the place is Paying less in Combined Salaries, than they are paying on their Monthly Utility Bill ???

I don't care that the Mill is Dying, they have let "Groups Ruin It" and now they have too do what they have too do. So Be It ....

And yep, they have a Union Too .... a lot of Help your Union Dues are when a Company Folds huh ???

Richard Shelby is willing to let the whole country including his own state "Alabama, which will also be affected' go into a financial tailspin because of his own special interests. There are several foreign auto companies who have built factories in the south with help and subsidies from American taxpayers money. Yes even money from American Autoworkers. We encouraged them and let them do it because we are not afraid of fair competion and we wanted to help create more American jobs in the South. Well now the shoe is on the other foot and Senator Shelby is unwilling to help those who helped him in the first place. In fact in his vengeance, he now wants to bite the hand that fed him. American Nameplate Autos (GM Ford & Chrysler) Now exceed or compare equally with the foreign competition.. American manufacturers (along with the rest of us) were caught off guard by outrageously high gas prices. Large vehicles were the bread and butter of American manufacturers and were profitable. We have several high quality vehicles that are getting better than even 30 MPG. That's a lot better than the competion. Even at this time several More high tech gas saving American Autos are being readied to be introduced. The financial crisis is now making it difficult for potential buyers to get a loan. Well You Ain't Seen Nothin Yet. If Shelby gets his way and destroys American industry. Three million jobs will be lost the first year. Two and a half million jobs will be lost in the following two years and soon your job, if you still have one will be lost. Someone should tell Senator Richard Shelby that this is the "UNITED" States of America. He's playing with fire.:muttering:

03-banghead

If Shelby & Sessions had voted for the financial bailout, your argument might hold (a little) water, but they didn't.

High gas prices caught us off-guard? Maybe you, because obviously your head is firmly entrenched in your intestines if you think that anyone outside of Alabama paid for the manufacturing plants here. However, economists have been saying for years that gas prices would go up (due in large part to skyrocketing demand in China and India). That's why Toyota, Honda, etc. shifted much of their R&D resources to building more fuel-efficient vehicles, while the Big Three continued to pimp gas-guzzlers like there was no tomorrow. Not coincidentally, Toyota, Honda, and most other foreign manufacturers are doing fine on their own.

You act as if every single job related to the U.S. auto industry will be lost. It won't happen. You also have to understand that this "loan" is only going to keep their heads above water until March, when they will come back and beg for more money (up to $100 bn). Essentially, they will be paying off a "loan" with another "loan" that they have a very small chance of paying back. I think even you, with your embarrassingly low understanding of economics, can realize that isn't good. You can call it a "loan" all you want, but it is essentially a subsidy that will do nothing but save the company temporarily. Meanwhile, the economic impact of the Southern plants will offset any lost revenues from tax breaks, land gifts, or free utilities within just a few years. If Michigan wants to prop up the Big Three...more power to them.

While it's certainly in Michigan's best interests to prop up the B3 they shouldn't have to. Getting the 3 back on their feet is solely up to management, labor and shareholders. Management and shareholders have taken it on the chin and lost money and the unions act like they're not part of the problem and refuse wage reductions. If I worked in UAW management I'd be worried about having a job should the workers come to realize they pay me to do nothing they can't do themselves.

I agree smn, I was just trying to call out the whining point of "your state gov't (along with private companies) gave foreign automakers mere millions in tax breaks, so taxpayers all across the country should throw billions into a black hole for us" for being ridiculous.

.

A '5' Year Tax Break has got Nothing to do With Bailing Out some Disaster Union Wrecked Monstrosity such as the Big '3' are.

A Company comes to a Location where they can find a Work Force and they offer a plan to the Local and City Governing Bodies who can offer Full and Blanket Tax Breaks so the Company can Grow.

Grow being the Key Word.

After the "Tax Break Period" Expires, you have a Solvent Company that is ready to pay what ever your Crazy Taxes are and can do it without it taking their Ability to Keep 600 Jobs in Play versus 200 Jobs.

I don't see anyone who could possibly get on the wrong side of offering a brand new company a Tax Break - - that is an Investment - - not a Bailout.
