I live in NC, John Edwards is our senator and I can tell you right now, he's not looked on favorably. He does not have the ability to carry any southern state for Kerry. Edwards couldnt' win reelection in his own state, who couldn't carry his own state in the primaries.

I live here, have all my life and I know southern politics. Kerry could run Robert E. Lee on his ticket and still not carry a southern state.

Edwards will do nothing for him down here, bank on it.
I live in NC as well, and I agree that having Edwards on the ticket won't help Kerry win NC, but he's probably already calculated that regardless of who he chose, he wouldn't carry NC, and I don't think NC is a "swing" state...

I'll even say that I have serious reservations about Kerry's "public service" record, having only served one term, and arguably, not that well...

That said...

I do agree with the original poster's views about Kerry appeal to women, something I didn't think about when I initially heard the announcement.

Forcing Bush to spent time in the South where Edwards is wooing the female vote, while Kerry is focusing on the Midwest is actually not a bad strategy, especially if Kerry can present a viable strategy on creating jobs. All this outsourcing stuff is going to do more harm to Bush than Kerry, IMHO.

A debate between a trial lawyer (Edwards) and an arrogant crook (Cheney)...? I'll be happy to call Vegas and put some bills on Edwards, especially if he's armed with evidence to prove Cheney's the lying type I think he is... "sorry, Mr. Veep, we've YET to discover WMDs in Iraq, nor do we have any proof to back your claims that Bin Laden and Saddam are tied together..."

If Edwards digs into the Veeps "Haliburton" ties, and the fact its revenue went up significantly as a result of the Iraq invasion, , Cheney's in deep **** here. Cheney may have more years of "government" experience, but I think Edwards can use that to his advantage...

Quote:But Edwards and his "Two Americas" speech is the most energizing campaign tool from a political perspective that has come up in this race.

Heard during his Senate campaign and heard it during the primaries. The speech is far from energizing, it's class warfare. That kind of message doesn't resonate as it used to. And it especially won't resonate if the economy continues to rebound.

Quote:That speech alone gives their ticket a chance to connect with a whole swath of potentially swayable lower- and middle-class white male Bush voters. (Not to mention the female factor pointed out at the beginning of this thread).

Polls have shown Bush getting upwards of 60% of the white male vote, 70% in the south. Edwards and his class warfare speech aren't enough to siphen a substantial number of those off, especially against a war time president.

You are right though, that kind of thing does resonate with women and that, along with his looks, could draw women away from Bush.

"sorry, Mr. Veep, we've YET to discover WMDs in Iraq, nor do we have any proof to back your claims that Bin Laden and Saddam are tied together..."

To which Cheney would respond, "Well Senator they weren't just my claims. You sit on the Senate Intellegence committe and you saw the same intellegence we did. You also voted in favor of the Iraq war resolution, you also stated, "This resolution sends a clear message to Iraq and the world: America is united in its determination to eliminate forever the threat of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction,". You also stated, "We must achieve the central goal of disarming Iraq." So I think it's somewhat disengenous of you to now distance yourself from you statements for political purposes. As far Iraq and bin Laden, the chairmen of the 9/11 commission have both stated that Iraq and al queda had ties. We're discovering more everyday."

That's all it would take to shut Edwards down and discredit any statement like the one you put forth above. That's why I don't believe you'll see him go that route. I don't believe he will directly challenge Cheney in such a way. National security is NOT his strength, he keep a populist tone and maintain his focus on class warfare. If he dives into national security, Cheney will rip him to shreds based on his lack of experience.

Quote:If Edwards digs into the Veeps "Haliburton" ties, and the fact its revenue went up significantly as a result of the Iraq invasion, , Cheney's in deep **** here.

Screaming Halliburton only works with the democratic choir. Regular voters don't pay attention to it. But if he did bring it up Cheney could respond with, "That's an interesting assertion, especially since Halliburton posted a loss of around a billion dollars last quarter."

Quote:Cheney may have more years of "government" experience, but I think Edwards can use that to his advantage...

Only if he avoids national security. The American people don't want a novice on such issues one heart beat away from the Oval office. He needs to stick to the class warfare message.

You're part of the minority. There aren't enough of you to swing one southern state to Kerry's side.

The battle ground states are Ohio and Pennsylvania. If either of those go the opposite way from 2000, they'll tip the election.

This is a great choice... Onward to victory for Kerry/Edwards '04!

(And Niner, you are absolutely on crack if you think that Cheney is going to run roughshod over Edwards... I think most Americans would rather have a trial lawyer as VP as opposed to a corrupt war profiteer whose company has been fleecing the taxpayers of BILLIONS on their sweetheart government contracts...)

Best comment I heard this morning: "Edwards should be a nice counterpoint to Cheney in this election. He's youthful, he's energetic, and he doesn't look like he just bit the head off of a newborn baby."

Re: the minority - you're not in a demographic minority, you're a minority in your majority group. That doesn't help dems.

Re the female vote - don't bet on Bush not getting a good bit. No Child Left behind, combined with making America safer (not debating this, just saying what he'll say) can get him a good number of votes.

Re the black vote - no he can't, but he didn't get it in 2000 and no republican has ever carried the black vote, they still win the presidency.

As far as you voting your causes - good for you, however a fail to see why you bring it up.

Probably, but most american's don't think the way you on the fringe left do about Cheney and don't necessarily hold those views of him.

If it was only the wacko left that voted, Edwards would be king. But fortunently for us normal people vote as well. And it's those undecideds that have to be convinced Edwards is a better choice, and screaming Halliburton won't do it.

I'm sure they're out there somewhere, but I wonder what Cheney's overall rating numbers look like with the public? If Bush is at some point less than 50 percent, I'd bet Cheney is below the 40 percent threshold.

I imagine they are as low, if not lower than Bush's. Cheney is a punching bag for the left and the media, some deserved, some not. He's made out to be a villain by most everyone on the left and they spout it on all the news shows and in commentary. That kind of thing can take a toll.

In the end though, the two guys at the top of the ticket are who people vote for. The VP's don't make that big a difference either way.

Attacking Edwards as a trial lawyer probably won't be real smart since Bush and Cheney have recently both hired "outside" counsel in the Valerie Plame leak investigation.

It seems they are not as opposed to trial lawyers as the claimed to be while campaigning.

There is a difference between hiring a lawyer for legal defence and a lawyer like Edwards that sues companies for money.

You can't point to defence attorneys as a chief reason health care costs are so out of control in this country. Trial lawyers on the other hand...

O.K. Rush, spin it however it suits your needs.........bottom line is somebody hired Edwards because they thought some drug company was trying to screw them over. Tweedle dee and Tweedle dum are hiring one to save their asses because they are in deep doo-doo.

Despite his conduct on the Senate floor with Sen. Leahy, I will give Cheney credit for phoning Edwards and congratulating him on his selection today. Bush did the same thing when Kerry clinched the nomination.

It is nice to see semblances of civility left in the current political climate. These people are supposed to be our leaders. It's nice when they're able to act like it. It sets a better tone for the country as a whole.
