Deion didn't continue because he was not a team player and wouldn't take a demotion when somebody better came up through the Braves system. So neither of the quit because the 162 games schedule was too rough. How come hardly any baseball players make 162 games if they are so darn tough.
What about Brian Jordan, he still plays baseball and had to quit football because he couldn't cut it.
If you think there is more activity in baseball than football, you are nuts! Try watching the right fielder in a baseball game for the whole 9 innings.
I can't stand the sport. Don't like most pro sports now anyway, but baseball tops the list. The national game IS football, followed closely by basketball. Baseball does lead the NHL, so don't think ya'll are in last place. And if it were a sport, which IT IS NOT, NASCAR would make baseball fourth on the list.
Last, but not least, most experts would know that soccer would be the most physically demanding team sport.
Tigernole79, thanks for providing the explanation about Bo and Deion.
Yeah, baseball is
so-o-o-o much much physically demanding than that sissy football. That's why baseball plays 162 games a year and football 16.
Baseball is definitely ahead of the NHL. But I believe the NHL didn't play this year!
You're right about soccer being probably the most physically demanding team sport. Constant running. I suppose tennis or a marathon is the most demanding individual sport.
Quote:Not really jumping on your case bossman, but don't come on a baseball thread and just bash America's pastime, especially when others get thrashed for coming onto other threads and just flaunting negative comments around.
Tigerpikapp, I apologize for giving my opinion on the untouchable and sacred sport of baseball.
Quote:Baseball may be boring to you and that's fine, it's your opinion and thank God it's a free world (well, at least country).
Thank you for allowing me to at least have an opinion!
Quote:Sure baseball could benefit from a salary cap. Yes the Yanks do spend a lot of money, but have only won 2 of their 26 as baseball's top payrollers (3 more under George without being that either)...free agency and boom of baseball popularity is what has exploded player pay, not the Yanks.
I used the Yankees as the prime example since it is obvious they simply go out and purchase whoever they need for yet another run at a championship.
Baseball is a boom in the summer since there is essentially no competition for the sports dollar. If the NFL or college basketball were played in summer, baseball would be lower than their current 4th ranking (see TigerNole79 comments).
Quote:More people watch baseball than any other American sport,
162 baseball games x 34 teams.
16 football games x 32 teams.
82 basketball games x 30 teams.
You're probably right interms of actual attendees at games.
Yet the NFL draws the most TV viewership and the network bids for those games are prolific indeed. I wonder why?
Quote:no American sport is older than baseball, baseball has withstood the test of time and is still around and being played basically the same way it's always been...not football, hockey or basketball can claim that.
I'm not debating baseball isn't a valid sport! Sure it's been here for a while. But do you think Abner Doubleday envisioned designated hitters, an all-star game determining the championship home field advantage, the mound being lowered, night games, and expansion of the season from 144 games to 162 games?
Quote:outside of the soccer boom, no sport is played by more Americans than baseball.
Because it is so easy and not so physically demanding as football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, etc. Softball evolved from baseball and I would bet nearly everyone has played in a softball game or league. Don't forget whiffleball and corkball.
Quote:Baseball will be and still is America's pastime...it's were we turn in history to rekindle old memories, it's like America's historical note card.
It is a legit sport, but it is being replaced by football as the national sport. We look back at baseball with fondness, like we do the Studebaker. It is simply being replaced by a better product.
Quote:Needless to say, don't knock it, especially if you've never played it (and maybe you had and weren't good, or didn't like it, whatever) and just hate the sport.
I played baseball. I just enjoyed playing - and watching - football more.
Quote:I hate hockey, cricket, bowling, pool, poker (the last three astonishes me that they're played on ESPN), but I don't go around bashing them on people's threads to just get my two cents in!
I hate those sports, too. Especially "poker". I also hate racing (humans, cars, horses), golf (more boring than baseball), and track & field events.
Sorry if you perceive my comments as bashing. I was just giving my honest opinion. I guess I would be shot if I lived in Cuba (which has a fairly competitve baseball program itself).
Quote:I'm not really attacking you, just pointing out some misguided or misconceived notions.
I'm very much relieved you are not attacking me. I will sleep much better now.
Please also understand I am
not really bashing baseball, I'm just pointing out its value as a spectator sport from my personal perception.
Enjoy your baseball this summer.
