These opponents are closer to an AAU or YMCA teams, not FCS or even D2 or D-III programs.

No one thinks a school like Kentucky Christian is an FCS level opponent. And no one has said they were either.

But Massey puts them ahead of dozens and dozens of D3 teams, and a number of D2 as well. When it comes to head to head competition, Kentucky Christian certainly wouldn’t be the worst D2 program out there.

Even Fort Lauderdale is better than some really bad NAIA teams. And If one is comparing bad NAIA teams and bad D3 teams, the bad D3 are much, much worse, and much more abundant as well.

The only thing proven by Chicago States results so far is that they aren’t better than any of the FCS teams they’ve played so far.

Making wild claims about the level of these non FCS opponents that aren’t even remotely accurate is a sort of straw man argument anyway. It doesn’t prove or disprove anything about Chicago State football.

Chicago St pulled a Chicago St and spouted off without thinking. The NEC decided to be gracious publicly to allow them to save face but I wouldn’t be shocked if there wasn’t a very stern private rebuking of the athletic department and its 1 unpaid intern sports information department.

The NEC even went back in time and started giving Chicago State players NEC weekly awards to help Chicago State cover their mistake, because Chicago State is clearly not in the NEC.

https://necsports.com/news/2026/10/15/FB...19_26.aspx

If Chicago State was a member, they’d be included in the conference standings.

But just look at the conference standings…

https://necsports.com/sports/football

Something sinister must be happening here.

I bet Chicago State got a “stern rebuking” for republishing the press release the NEC issued. I wouldn’t be surprised if they get expelled from conference over this. Imagine the unprofessionalism of using the home office as a source! The unmitigated gall those unpaid athletics assistants have on the Southside!

It really is a huge scandal…

The NEC must have gotten it wrong, because their website says

“Two from NEC Football Selected to Jerry Rice Award Watch List”

https://necsports.com/news/2026/10/21/tw...-list.aspx

There are historical perspectives for "independent teams" to be members of a conference. There's usually an administrative reason for it.

Locally, the Southland Conference is a great example. Every other sport began play in 1963/64, but football did not until the following year. The reason was that schedules were full or past the point where conference games could be scheduled.

In 1981, North Texas was an independent in all sports. When the NCAA forced a lot of schools down to I-AA in football. They joined the SLC for all-sports in 1982. Every article and conference publication listed UNT as a member of the SLC, but did not play an SLC schedule. They had too many games on the schedule to fit in a conference slate. The conference standings still have UNT as 0-0 for '82.

Southeastern Louisiana re-instated their program with no SLC schools and was listed as 0-0 in the conference standings. In Lamar's first year after re-instatement of the program, they played four SLC teams, all based on geography, but certainly not a full slate.

I know South Alabama and Georgia State had similar things happen with their conference counting them as members with no to limited games.

In the end, CSU is a new program and this is not new territory for a conference to consider a new program as a member (and vice versa), despite them playing few to no conference games.

They're about right where I thought they be. Except for losing at Roosevelt. If they can win next week they'd pretty much nearly meet my low expectations for the season. Next year is really going to be the real benchmark setting year for the team. The season is a "success" in the terms the team played and wasn't really blown out. They at least kept nearly everyone so far under 50.

They beat a couple high school level intramural type teams. The guys on those squads wouldn’t have made JV ball in the South.

RE: Chicago State football 2026
Their six FCS losses have been by an average of 28 points. They hung with Tarleton (who is undefeated) for the first half. I honestly thought they would be losing every game by 50 or more points and that Tarleton would have hung 80 on them.

So they are doing better than most people expected. I’m not saying they are going to compete for the NEC championship next year but winning a couple conference games shouldn’t be a surprise. But they won’t be able to play NCCAA (or whatever these “schools” are in) again and pad their record in scores that impress people who know nothing about college football.

CSU is right where most probably expected:

--They will likely end up with a 3-8 record, with the wins coming against over-matched teams
--Average attendance in line with many NEC schools (2,591)
--An expected growth curve as players grow within the program.

Next year's schedule:
Eight NEC games
One non-conference game announced (NC A&T)
Three non-conference dates to fill

I wonder if our resident UIW fan will pop in to take his lumps, or slither off into the shadows of the internet and hope that we all forget about his comments in this thread?

Serious question, did you play football in high school? I did, and I was good enough to get recruiting materials from Dartmouth, but I didn't want to play sports in college. Some guys from my team played at smaller schools, I remember Hardin Simmons and Abilene Christian as a couple that some of the older kids from my team went to, but I had no desire to spend that kind of time and discipline on college on athletics. I wanted to chase girls, etc. Today, kids in general are far more serious about sports than they were in 1990 when I was coming up. ANYBODY playing college football today, D1, D2, D3, whatever, is someone who is extremely serious about football.

The last guy off the bench at Chicago St right now would be a quality starter for a top 10 ranked high school team in most States, including many in the South. Did they rush things? Yes. Do they have a long way to go? Yes. However, I'd say that they're doing ok considering everything, and dumping on them to boost your own ego is incredibly disrespectful to all their hard work.

235 beat Incarnate Words average for last season, so that number, as shockingly low as it is, is actually an improvement.

Last season attendance average was only 216.

The worst in D1 obviously.

Let’s see if a double digit home loss to Chicago State helps boost their attendance this season…

Thank you central Texas brother. While the result is disappointing, I would expect this win by Chicago St will soon be vacated by the NCAA. I would bet that Chicago St probably used ineligible players. UIW will get this win back sooner or later. One of the many fans in attendance heard a rumor that one of the Chicago St players used a crayon to fill out his college application.

They're the same rung in D1 sports. Honestly these are the games both teams need to be playing. It's better then having a buy game at let's say Houston and Texas. A road game at UIW is at least winnable. It's a good way to double dip games in a location. At least Chicago State isn't buying 4 non D1 home games. UIW is only buying 1.

I suppose everyone mocking Incarnate Word could be considered a form of “talking about” them…?

But feel free to keep hammering home the message of how bad Chicago States is, all while looking up at them. And taking L’s from them…

The old crabs in a barrel analogy comes to mind here.

Such a weird insult. No actual Chicago St players/fans here, just people interested in that program, yet you choose to insult the school anyway? You're an embarrassment to your school, which I will remind everyone here I actually admire and have family ties to.
