Not ignorant at all, but you know that. Of course taxes are crazy in those places, yet that is what Dems want here. Just look at California. One? How about every person that voted for Dem state control in California? No idea where you got the 50% figure from. From what I've read about 25% of Califoria gas price is tax/fee related. Even that is absurd, but it's what they want. So be it.

He cited prices in European nations being high and that ours our cheap by comparison. Some of the ones he cited are around 50% comprised of various taxes. He claimed that's what dems want here. So I asked him to show me any dem who is proposing 50% taxes.

California tax is currently $.818 per gallon. $.634 is the California tax, the other $.184 is federal.

The current state average in California per AAA is $6.38.

So currently, just under 10% of gas in California is from state tax. Even if you add in the federal portion, that only brings it up to 12.8% total tax. That's not even close to 25% 07-coffee3

Wait...did I miss something...did the war end? Again?

I know its hard for you to tell this looking at oil prices, considering they are much lower than they were under Biden* and dropping into the 80's again today.

womp womp

I know it's even harder for you to understand the crack spread and that the market manipulation by trump and his cronies are the main reasons why oil is even remotely as "cheap" as it is, and that gas is still high and diesel hit an all time record high under trump a week or so ago.

Perhaps you don't know, but we buy gas, not barrels of oil. 01-wingedeagle

Maybe you also don't know, but high diesel costs is one of the biggest drivers of inflation.

Finally, per google, the average price per barrel for WTI during Biden was $79.31. The average so far in the second trump dumpster fire has been around $75. It's currently $91.26.

As of right now the wholesale price of gas in Los Angeles is $4.49. Which is higher than the retail price of gas where I live.

But let's take that $4.49 and compare it to the retail price of gas in Los Angeles, which is currently $6.42. Thats a 43% markup. SO what is it about a libturd run state that the wholesale price is about $1 higher than most places, and then another 43% in taxes and other things are added on top of that.

Supply, demand, market, all lead to the final price. And maybe you're not aware, but California has one of the highest average salaries of any state. Only Massachusetts, Washington (state) and New York are higher. So things naturally cost more. They also have pretty nice weather there too. 03-wink

But they're probably higher because it costs about twice as much to deliver now than it did before trumps idiotic war that caused diesel to hit an all time high. 03-wink

You got it.

The effects of higher base prices for feedstock materials affects higher prices in areas, while localized taxes affect end prices in those locales.

Citing higher prices in Cali. as opposed to, say, Texas for gasoline and diesel is inane on its face to blame Cali for all the higher prices over time. The primary driver of higher gasoline and diesel -- in Texas, Mississippi, Maine, and California *overall* and *across* the markets over the very short amount of time in question (since Feb) is the very much higher cost of feedstock materials.

Has nearly nothing to do with localized fuel taxes (that seem to be the cheap and available deflection these days)

What did Biden do (specifically) to affect the run up?

The economic record is clear, most of the run up in '20 was due to external market forces.

Here, the causation is fundamentally obvious. The base stock supply dropped by 20%. Why did the base stock supply drop? Because the US President atttacked Iran, which proceeded to shut down that artery of oil.

Kind of obvious.

The record is absolutely clear in both cases. But you seem to harp on R v D, without bothering in the slightest about base data as to both cases.

Astonishingly you are worse at economics than law.

You have to be a Rice dei admission

It’s really simple when you take it as face value like a person who says they care about you but repeatedly ignores your wishes or needs. For Democrats, unless you are a fringe leftist radical you are an afterthought

So, we are arguing semantics? The 50% figure is irrelevant and we ALL know Dems are in favor of higher gas taxes in general, given their push for electric vehicles The fact that gas is high now actually is what they want. They get a twofer in that higher prices may push some to EVs and they also get to bash Trump at the same time. It's all political partisanship, same as always. BTW, VA is increasing the gas tax every year. Guess which party instituted that?

Can you explain this manipulation you speak of?

Yes. On nearly every Friday during this war, trump would announce that a deal had been agreed to or would be shortly, and the markets would close the weekend down a bit and stabilized.

Then the markets opened back up on Sunday night based on that information.

Then on Monday, he'd say the deal was off, etc. and would start bombing and **** again.

Then the markets would go up again until Friday.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

That's was lead to a historically out of whack 3-2-1 crack spread. It's why gas kept going up in price but oil didn't skyrocket up to $150 a barrel.

And while all this was happening, there were several times when HUGE purchases and sales of oil happened just before trumps announcements.

Whenever some idiot wants to make a point at gas prices being high they always post a pic from California and compare it to a pic from a decade ago. It's all political nonsense. As far as having extensive public transit options, it's helps when your country is the size of Alabama.

Show me ONE actual DEM who supports 50% of the cost per gallon of gas to be tax and/or has actually said anything remotely akin to that. I'll wait. 01-wingedeagle

Those aren't semantics. Dude said dems wanted 50% tax. There is no dem on record wanting this.

Do some likely want higher prices to push people to EV's, etc? Of course, never said otherwise.

Dude, you butted into our discussion, so don't then rag on me for trying to explain it to you. 07-coffee3

Lastly, many states gas tax increases go to pay for roads.

" the market manipulation by trump and his cronies are the main reasons why oil is even remotely as "cheap" as it is"

Have you ever looked into the oil speculators? Financial speculators rarely take physical possession of oil barrels. Instead, they trade financial derivatives to profit purely from price fluctuations.

While institutional funds—such as investment banks and hedge funds—dominate the market and account for roughly 70% of all oil delivery contracts.

It's just Something to ponder.

Enjoyed some travels to visit relatives this past weekend. Filled up several times in Tennessee Flying J's at $3.75/gallon. Prices are continuing to fall nationwide as well...
