It's not a crisis for the U.S. It is an annoyance. It's a crisis for China. While I wouldn't be surprised that the Iranians were mining because of their, "proceed cautiously" remark about shipping passage, you would have to expect that. They are merely damaging their own customer base.

What we need to watch out for is their destruction of their own oil facilities as their last gesture of ill will to all. I am reminded of how Sadam attacked Kuwait to destroy their oil producing capacity because they were believed to be selling oil below the OPEC set price and selling it to Japan. One bad boy friend of China and North Korea sticks it to Japan, and now another out of their total hate for all things not fundamentalist may wind up inadvertently sticking it to China.

We've been bombing some of that infrastructure - storage at least. Not sure about the production assets.

This was the "modular" platform that that had a "mission bay" that was supposed allow the vessel to easily convert the vessel to surface warfare vessel, anti-sub warfare vessel, or mine hunter by just swapping modules. The anti-sub module failed to work. The surface combat module has no over the horizon ability and sucks for blue water combat---but it does have 24 Hellfires can ruin the day for any small boats that attempt to attack it. The good news is the mine hunting module actually works pretty well, though it arrived a decade behind schedule.

The LCS might actually finally earn its keep in the gulf as a mine hunter and as a deterrent to small boat attacks in the area. Its still too limited with respect to anti-air abilities---but at least it can finally contribute to something other than the national debt.

Its a crisis for the world---its a pain here just because it will make our fuel more expensive. At least there will be no shortages domestically. We can reopen the Straight----and I suspect we will do it fairly quickly. We did it during the tanker wars in the 1980's---dealt with air strikes and mines back then and we can do it again if need be. The piices are already in place.

Not to mention the LNG, fertilizer, and other important resources shipped through the strait.

You might find this interesting...

The LCS would not be a great solo escort in its current configuration. Its way under armed (something that can be fixed, but thats another subject). All Im saying is the LCS can help escort---but its real value at this point is its ability to clear mines. They are actually going to be useful if the gulf is mined.
