RE: Antisemitism grades
Cool. I am an indirect Hamas lover supporter, and OO is now a self-professed indirect white supremacist. All is cool in Quadville.

The issue is that, and kudos to you for the turnaround, while I might disagree with you on specific points, I dont think I would deign to label you in passing a 'white supremacist lover' just for ***** and grins and broad effect. I doubt the vast majority here would do that as well. And, in honesty, there is certainly one that would, and has.

On the other hand, it may very well at this point you feel no such compunction not to engage in that broad level troll by implication that you so aptly point out above. Your engaging with the hamaswhateverwhatever seems to indicate that.

And to be fair, if I label you a 'white supremacist' on your terms (invitation?) above -- feel free to call out the ad hom troll that it is -- that is one not based solely and only by implication.

Who are you referring to, specifically? And would the above be ad-hominem?

Seems to me you've devolved to the level of trolling and drive-by posting.

"Oh GoodOwl... it's SO REFRESHING to have a back and forth without any insulting language! It is SIMPLY DIVINE! Why oh why can't all conversations here be so lovely?"

You guys have now completely buried the lede. I didn't see this story elsewhere, but if Hamas DID 'attack' humanitarian aid workers, this is a pretty major black eye for its supporters... and rather than obfuscate the issue, you should be talking about it... because I KNOW that none of you would support such an act... that ALL of you know that such an action would damage the suppfor the protests... that it would be in direct conflict (once again, doing what one accuses others of doing) with what Hamas previously claimed that Israel did...

so why the focus on burying the lede??

If you're NOT an anti-Israel hamasophile, why do you feel compelled to respond as if you are?? Surely you admit that these people exist, right?

Major black eye for Hamas supporters? Being a Hamas supporter is a major black eye itself! And that's because Hamas is a terrorist organization who started the entire conflict by massacring 1,000+ Israelis (primarily citizens).

I'm sure there is a percentage of folks who have been at Pro-Palestinian protests that support Hamas, but I think the vast majority support the Gazan people and oppose the Israeli government.

The conflation of Israel with Jews and Hamas with Gazans is one of the reasons any discussions around this war quickly devolve.

Pay attention.

Insert defacto in front of Hamas. The effect of a united front against Trump is to help each faction individually, but each faction does not necessarily support another.

I'll turn it around on myself, for clarity. Some white supremacists support Trump. I support Trump. Now, using your logic, you might say I support white supremacy. I do not. I oppose white supremacy. But my support of Trump might indirectly aid their cause, whether I support it or not. After all, I helped him get elected by casting my vote.

The term "defacto" doesn't make your logic more sound. Still a false dichotomy.

"Indirectly aiding a cause," in the way you describe, is not at all the same as being a supporter. I wouldn't say you support white supremacy, for the straightforward reason that I wouldn't make the mistake of equating voting for Trump to being in favor of white supremacy. You seem to recognize how wildly inaccurate it would be for us to label you a white supremacist because you voted for Trump - yet you have no hesitation in labeling anyone on this board opposed to Trump as (defacto) Hamas supporters. Double standard, and seriously flawed logic. Why do you do it?

Experts say that 2+2=4. Of course some far left groups have encouraged peaceful protests to turn violent. What's the point of stating the blooming obvious - unless it's your double standard again? If you're implying that anyone siding with the protesters is defacto a far leftist in favor of violence, then you're employing a false dichotomy that you would never apply to yourself.

Not just this board - the entire far left wing.

Well, here is something:

Hamas has been confiscating aid

Yet the Pro-palestinian forces on our campuses and now a part of the antiICE rioting say it is all Israels fault that Gazans are starving, and blaming Israel eventually comes back to blaming Trump, for opposing antisemitism.

I don't think there is any real conflation of Israel and Jews. They ARE a Jewish state. Not all Jews are Israelis and not all Israelis are Jews... but the nation of Israel is CLOSELY tied to the Jewish faith.

Hamas is neither a nation NOR a faith... and while I understand the point you'd like to make about Hamas and Palestinians, I'm not sure the reality on the ground supports that point. While I won't claim they don't exist, I haven't seen one, much less meaningful percentages of Palestinians 'turn on' what you seem to agree is the INSTIGATOR of Israel's actions that are being protested.

So it's as if you don't want Israel punishing the Palestinian people for the acts of a few bad actors, but there is little to no evidence that the Palestinians have done a single thing to 'distance' themselves from their bad actors.

Do you see meaningful actions taken by the Palestinian people to 'root out' Hamas et al? If they don't want to turn them over to Israel, that's fine. Turn them over to Syria or Iran or whomever... but REMOVE them from Palestine... and if the battlefield then shifts to Israel/Iran... so be it.

IMO, it's not reasonable to draw a distinction between Hamas and Palestine when Palestinians don't ever seem to stand in meaningful defiance of them. It's more like the guy who never gets in a fight, but lets his pit bull maul anyone who crosses him... who then claims to be an innocent victim.... it's not him, it's his DOG

It doesnt, but good to point that out.

In Ham's defense (amazing that, coming from me) Ham is private individual. Who posts here. And happens to be moderator.

I think the better issue is if Ham sided with a flagrant ad hom in that manner.

On a light one like this, imo Ham has every right to be in his 'private person' mode. And I think it proper to read his comment there, given the lightness, as that of his private view.

If not, I would hazard a guess that Ham shouldnt respond to a full 15 - 20% of comments at all. Which really doesnt seem equitable. I wouldnt want the above to be normalizing Ham being disallowed to be speaking in his private mode.

Of course, this post might be a violation in the strictest sense of commenting on mod policies. And if so, absolutely glad to take the warning ding.

You are 100% correct that this is technically a violation... really by both of you.... and also perhaps for me to respond in line like this... but rather than delete these comments and warn or reply privately... I am doing it this way... as I have done before.

Tanq... I appreciate and acknowledge your correct observations above.

The reality is that if I actually moderated the commentary on here by ANY strict standard, There MIGHT be two posters on here... and I wouldn't be one of them. The reality is that I have sufficient violations to ban almost everyone on here... and though as an honest person, I'd have to ban myself as well... there is NO requirement that I do so. No other moderators (nor a few of you that I've asked to) will TOUCH this forum... for a number of reasons... among them:

We aren't paid or compensated in any way. Time spent moderating this forum is time NOT spent enjoying it.

Lots of us know each other... and sometimes I've had to moderate 'friends'... and that CAN impact friendships. While some of you may feel unknown on this forum, I do not at all.

Many people like to 'victimize' themselves... they 'attack' moderators as posters and then if we switch from poster to mod, they decry the 'power trip'.... which makes posting not at all enjoyable.

That said... and THIS is important...
Forums like this one have nothing to do with the main focus of this site... for which the owner has limited ways that he monetizes it to fund it. If he sold it like he COULD... you'd see ads galore... so it is greatly appreciated that he doesn't do that. Even so, there are SOME things that become red flags for his sponsors... and we try to keep it down or limited.

If you want to report an ad-hom attack... feel free to... and I will put on my moderator cap and consider it.... but don't do it in a 'post'. That's a LITERAL AND CLEAR violation of the AUP and not what moderators respond to. There is a 'report' button on every post. This doesn't mean you can't accuse someone of engaging in ad hom as part of a post.... just don't do it as an attempt to 'report' it. Also though, I am able to determine without a report that I think someone has violated the rules... or not. I have lots of discretion.

The purpose of moderation on here is to encourage constructive debate.... but because we don't have many posters, I tend not to aggressively discourage 'not' constructive debate. I think that's fair. Not every post and certainly not every word need be constructive for that to be the case.... but I can also get tired of the BS... and of course I am more aware of posts responding to me than I am at others... and I let people get away with clear violations, in part because they were directed at me... and I don't want to be 'reactive' as a mod... but it also means I allow myself to be reactive at a poster.... and I'm not going to investigate or argue about 'who started' something. If I think it's bad enough, I'll just STOP it.

If you feel personally attacked and you want to report it... feel free. Some on here have gotten away with 'racist' supporting comments... but be warned that it is much easier for me to ban people than to 'keep up' with their collective warnings. at well below 100% warning, your posts become where nobody can see them until I personally approve them. I'm not doing that.

So really, I'd just say... pretend you're actually in the quad, and don't say anything on here you wouldn't say to that person's face. Give them the courtesy of suspecting they are a Rice grad... and generally here with constructive intent. It's a MODERATORS job to decide that someone has stepped over that line... and you can impact that by reporting it to me. I don't necessarily read the 'intent' that you might... and I don't read every post... and if you or anyone else responds to that troubling post, I will now have to decide if I am thwarting debate by removing an entire POST AND RESPONSES as opposed to just that one comment.

Trump uses antisemitic slur in remarks promoting his 'big, beautiful bill'

Trump is either a liar or a foolish, ignorant, doddering old man.

I expect outrage from people here about his antisemitic slur.

Will I be disappointed?

Oh, the ADL has checked in at https://x.com/ADL/status/1941113247328808990

Quote:The term 'Shylock' evokes a centuries-old antisemitic trope about Jews and greed that is extremely offensive and dangerous. President Trump's use of the term is very troubling and irresponsible.

It underscores how lies and conspiracies about Jews remain deeply entrenched in our country. Words from our leaders matter and we expect more from the President of the United States.

Good for them!

I wonder who those two posters could be. George, probably for one.

As for the ad homs - don't care THAT much. Just rolls off my back like water off a duck. Used to bother me more. Too old now to give a damn what some guy I don't know says about me.

Just would like to point out that many of the posters I have the most negative interactions with have positive rep points from me.

I think Ham does a good job.
