I was hoping Memphis might "slip" in at No. 25 but knew the Tigers' chances were about 10 percent at best.

The only time I recall an NIT winner finishing in one of the final polls was when Minnesota, at 20-10, finished No. 25 in the final coaches poll in 1993.

I, of course remember 1978 when Texas won the NIT and finished ranked 17. UK was #1. This was the last year with no conference runnerups, although they had 11 slots for independents.

A good memory, Bullet. Just checked that final 1978 poll and smiled to see DePaul at No. 3. Ah, those days are a distant memory.

1978 was a long wait for UK fans, 20 years. In 1975 there was a story about a player from the 1966 team (lost to UTEP in title game) who had saved a piece of celebratory cake from 1966 in his freezer. He promised to eat it all if UK beat UCLA in that final (as they were favored to do until John Wooden motivated his team by announcing his retirement). Hope he saved it 3 more years.
