The Duke-UNC game on Wednesday night was the most-viewed weeknight game in ESPN history, even though the biggest star in the game, Zion Williamson, went down with an injury 30 seconds into the game.

Weren't college football ratings down this past season?

No telling how big the audience really was for the Duke-Carolina game.
The game was not only broadcast by ESPN, but was also broadcast over the Old ACC Network (RAYCOM).
Viewers had a choice of Dan Shulman and Jay Bilas on ESPN or Tim Brando and Mike Gminski on Raycom.

This factor is so overrated. The biggest difference (and likely to remain so for the foreseeable future) is that streaming viewers over multiple streaming services are rarely captured. Once that factor is somehow accounted for we will have better rating stats.

Currently all Nielsen ratings are calculated from basically about 40,000 "Nielsen" households representing a cross-section of the country and then extrapolated out via mathematical formulas.

In other words, since I assume the Raycom option goes bye-bye next year I don't expect to see a ratings change for the ESPN games next year due to this factor.

Cheers,
Neil

Nielsen now captures streaming viewers.

As somebody who is hypothetically in a house that hypothetically has Nielsen monitoring equipment, I can hypothetically confirm this alleged scenario.
