Basketball TV Ratings Up
ESPN says their audience for men's college basketball is up 15% this season over last season. The Duke-UNC game on Wednesday night was the most-viewed weeknight game in ESPN history, even though the biggest star in the game, Zion Williamson, went down with an injury 30 seconds into the game.

Weren't college football ratings down this past season?

No telling how big the audience really was for the Duke-Carolina game.
The game was not only broadcast by ESPN, but was also broadcast over the Old ACC Network (RAYCOM).
Viewers had a choice of Dan Shulman and Jay Bilas on ESPN or Tim Brando and Mike Gminski on Raycom.

This factor is so overrated. The biggest difference (and likely to remain so for the foreseeable future) is that streaming viewers over multiple streaming services are rarely captured. Once that factor is somehow accounted for we will have better rating stats.

Currently all Nielsen ratings are calculated from basically about 40,000 "Nielsen" households representing a cross-section of the country and then extrapolated out via mathematical formulas.

In other words, since I assume the Raycom option goes bye-bye next year I don't expect to see a ratings change for the ESPN games next year due to this factor.

Cheers,
Neil

Okay "rarely" was probably a poor choice of words on my part. But it's still relatively new, there's been no analyses that I am aware of that's been done that they have a representative sample for all the streaming options out there, and it only covers live streaming. Check out SMW and see how "rarely" streaming numbers are included for any other network but ESPN channels.

Once they get this down and include more networks will they even try to handle one of the huge benefits of streaming? For those who actually attend the games in person or who work or who have another commitment on the day of a particular sporting event they need to be at thanks to streaming, on-demand, or DVR get an opportunity to view the game at their convenience. Nielsen apparently is not considering these options while many cable networks are already doing the latter two in order to get a better feel for what a show is drawing over a three day and/or five day period, rather than simply the live Nielsen numbers alone being used to determine if a show should be cancelled or not.

The future is here but not sure Nielsen is adapting fast enough. It will be interesting to see if they do or if something else replaces them.

Cheers,
Neil

RE: Basketball TV Ratings Up
Streaming numbers are certainly being captured, they're simply disputed. For example, Netflix doesn't need Nielsen - they know EXACTLY how many people are watching because they simply count the number of connections. ESPN no doubt does the same thing with its streaming. However, if I understand correctly, the issue is how many people are actually watching each connection - that part may not be captured all that accurately (and ESPN may argue with Nielsen about how many "TVs" are "tuned in" as well).

I thought this blurb from the article was interesting:

The Rivalry Week matchup ranks as the fifth most-watched college basketball game in ESPN history, and is the most-watched college basketball game on ESPN since 2014 (Duke at Syracuse).

Im interested in seeing what the ratings for last nights Duke/Syracuse ratings were. Even though SU is unranked, ratings could be higher than Syracuse/Duke, 2014, since the storylines were so unique; folks wanting to see JB since the fatal accident. Folks wanting to see how Duke responds without Zion and his sneekers. And JB and Coach K are such close friends but really want to beat each other.

As somebody who is hypothetically in a house that hypothetically has Nielsen monitoring equipment, I can hypothetically confirm this alleged scenario.

I hypothetically had a chance to become a Nielsen family last month. Was very tempting, growing up in an era where rating really were everything. The idea that Nielsen families were so powerful, and yet hardly anyone ever knew one...there was just something sort of nostalgic and attractive about the idea of actually being one, even though their importance is nothing like it once was.

In the end, I declined...I'm pretty particular and elaborate about my A/V setup, and wasn't thrilled with not being able to install it myself, or to have control over where it went in my setup. If the equipment had been a little less intrusive, or they compensation a little better, I would have done it. It was tough to say no.

I've done the Nielsen written log before - twice! - but I've never had hardware attached.

This is quite the Nielson connected message board because my family did Nielson some years ago. What's that, 4 different people on this message board? Odds 1:25,000 that a family will be chosen yet we have 4 on this message board.

Last Saturday’s Duke-Syracuse men’s college basketball game delivered a 1.8 rating and 2.98 million viewers on ESPN, up 64% in ratings and 71% in viewership from the same matchup last year (1.1, 1.74M) and up 125% and 116% respectively from 2017 (Kansas-Texas: 0.8, 1.38M).

The Blue Devils’ win ranks as the sixth-most watched college basketball game of the season, with Duke having played in four of the top six, five of the top eight, and nine of the top fifteen.

On Tuesday night, Duke-Virginia Tech drew 1.67 million viewers — up 166% from last year (Florida-Alabama: 625K) and up 34% from 2017 (Duke-FSU: 1.25M). Ratings were not immediately available.

Complain all you want about ESPN's treatment of Duke basketball but people like watching Duke basketball. ESPN is just giving the people what they want.
