From what I hear Texas A&M commerce and 2 SWAC teams.
Sure pal. No SWAC team is leaving that conference to be with Houston Baptist, New Orleans, and Nicholls State.
Actually it’s a very good source, it’s an assistant AD at an SLC school
Is he confident those 2 SWAC schools will make the move? That’s where the disconnect is. It’s easy to buy the Southland targeting 2 SWAC schools, but it’s tough to see a D1 school leaving its current league for the current Southland.

From what I understand is there is a few being looked a (I’m sure there is two that they are hopping for), the the first two to jumps are the two that will be taken. Look what’s happening in the MEAC current

I don't think the new Southland is that much better than the SWAC.. the Southland brand isn't much better than the SWAC. The only reason to abandon the SWAC now is it you think both the Celebration bowl and the MEAC are folding.

RE: What is the future of the Southland Conference?
If you can sell one SWAC school on travel savings you may be able to get what you want.
I would offer the entire 5 SWAC West as a package deal which would allow them to better respect and maintain their history, traditions, and culture

That deal is worth looking into for the Southland. But, I can't see Texas Southern and Prairie View leaving the SWAC without each other or Grambling and Southern, especially now that the SWAC will be the strongest of the HBCU conferences.

Cross ORU off the list—they aren’t going to the Southland.

I don’t believe that was the case. I believe ORU was upset they took in 3 D2 teams the year after they joined. This caused scheduling issues for them as they were already maxed out on non-D1 games

Wishful thinking. No SWAC team will join the Southland after the best teams left for the WAC.

I just went on the ORU board, and there is no discussion of leaving the Summit for the Southland.
From what I remember, ORU's reasons for joining the Southland was to play more games in Texas, where they recruit. Once they were put in a division with UCA and the Louisiana schools, their purpose for moving to the SLC was defeated. They went back to the Summit.
The new version of the Southland may be easier to win. And traveling from Tulsa to Texas and Louisiana is better than traveling to the Dakotas. But I don't see ORU leaving the Summit again.

Which of course makes little sense, since they would have still had games against Southland schools in Texas even if placed in a division with the AR/LA schools, whereas in the Summit, they have no games in Texas.

The poster Old Titan, IIRC, his father was the former AD at ORU and thus he has a ton of inside information. There’s a lot of great ORU history stuff on there if you use the search function.
And that forum goes way back. I remember reading it when ORU was one of the top mid-majors in the country in the mid-2000s and won at Kansas one year.

That is all exactly correct. It wasnt the fact the they added the new schools from d2 but the the internal scheduling shifts that resulted that made them bolt. It is the same trap the WAC is falling into. It minimizes any advantages of having the new schools by their own sheer numbers and insistence on not having to travel.

If I were the LA schools, I'd push for Grambling and Southern, selling them on the Southland being a Louisiana version of the Big West with outposts in Big TX cities Houston, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi.

I really don't think ORU would make a lateral move anytime soon. They would be forfeiting their share of the $$ they just won this year
Plus the Southland needs football schools

RE: What is the future of the Southland Conference?
The LA schools can make an appeal to the SWAC schools if they want but I don’t see it fitting within their vision and mission.
With the MEAC bleeding members, the SWAC has positioned itself to be THE premier HBCU conference in the nation. Localizing and losing that exposure throughout the entire South would be a huge step back for Grambling and Southern.

Your candidate pool is the same DII Texas pool that the WAC and ASUN are fishing from.
The ASUN is not fishing for Texas schools.... Sorry

Right now, the SWAC is mostly a bus league—jumping to an all TX/LA conference would accomplish what exactly? Even shorter bus trips?

Would the savings of more TX travel with no travel beyond Louisiana outweigh the loss of the HBCU culture.
Were the TX SWAC schools excited about the FL schools coming on board?
If I'm the TX SWAC schools I pitch for the Southland to add the entire 5 school SWAC West to replace the 5 schools they lost.
This would give the TX SWAC schools the best of both worlds
