What is the future of the Southland Conference? - shizzle787 - 03-22-2021 08:07 PM

As of July 1 of this year, the conference will only have eight members:

Houston Baptist
Incarnate Word
McNeese State
New Orleans
Nicholls State
Northwestern State
Southeastern Louisiana
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

Will anybody else raid the conference or will it expand?

If so, who do they expand with?

My inside source tells me they are going to expand by three teams if they can get who they want.

Their only options are D2 teams

Texas A&M University–Commerce
Angelo State University
West Texas A&M University

The Southland will be down to 6 football schools. They're going to want at least two warm bodies for scheduling purposes.

It will survive, it will just be crappier than it has been in the past. That said---I dont think the schools left care all that much. Apparently, most of the left behind schools were not all that interested in investing more money in athletics---which was why some of the higher budget schools bailed. Most of the ones left have very limited budgets, so they might see the changes as a good thing. They may feel the new lower level of competition within the conference actually serves their interests better by allowing everyone a more realistic shot of actually winning on the shoe string budgets they can afford.

If they can hang on for a few years, they will have a chance to reconcile with their haughty brethren after the they realize an FBS WAC is never going to happen, that they were foolish for thinking it would, and that the idea was beyond ludicrous.

And they can take Tarleton along with SFA, SHSU, and Lamar and have a nice little happy bus/bush league again.

The football-playing Lone Star Conference members with the three highest enrollments (all 10K+). Makes sense, although the WAC may target one of those to round out their membership at 14.

The big Lone Star schools are really their only option.

The big question is do they bring in A&M Kingsville or do they wait and see if the school merges into A&M CC to form South Texas A&M?

The Southland is also going to have to enter the waiver period for NCAA automatic qualifier status in men's tennis, men's golf and women's golf due to being below the threshold between the departures and some sports being suspended by McNeese for the time being.

While that may be their only options, the Southland has before and likely did again at least reach out to Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M regarding membership. It's been brought up before, but if they did not bite when the league actually had some programs their fans, schools would be interested in - this Southland is certainly not that as SFA, Sam Houston and Lamar are out.

From what I hear Texas A&M commerce and 2 SWAC teams.

Sure pal. No SWAC team is leaving that conference to be with Houston Baptist, New Orleans, and Nicholls State.

Guessing it’s a Southland source. The Southland would definitely target 2 SWAC + Commerce. But SWAC teams leaving for the Southland is a whole different story.

Kingsville has a good stadium and fits the footprint. I’m hoping it’s Commerce and Kingsville.

I'd be very very surprised if the Southland added another sitting FCS program, unless they changed the name, moved the HQ, and completely rebranded as a new entity....which is possible.

Your candidate pool is the same DII Texas pool that the WAC and ASUN are fishing from.

Oral Roberts is the sleeper here. They were in the SLC from 2012-14, and they left without any explanation. Now that SFA, SHSU, ACU, and Lamar have left, the institutional profile of the SLC looks more similar to ORU then it did. After this year, I could see them try and establish themselves as the basketball kings of the SLC and milk the autobid every year.

Actually it’s a very good source, it’s an assistant AD at an SLC school

There was an explanation. The Southland wanted to do divisions and ORU didn’t want to be lumped with UCA and the LA schools.

Cross ORU off the list—they aren’t going to the Southland.

Kingsville, Commerce, and WTAMU make the most sense.
