I thought you'd be relieved...
Seeing a story in the Athletic. Sounds like Nats trying to keep on doing the major deferrals in the deals and Rendon not going for it. First off, good for him, and 2nd off- if the Nats lose Rendon because of the dumb as **** deferrals, I'm going to be mighty pissed off.

Why would the Nats do that if they're serious about keeping Rendon?
Huge deferrals were a big part of their offer last year to Harper, and Rendon has the same agent.

these are supposedly less. but still. If Rendon doesn't want them, why in the hell would you insist on them, unless you really don't want him?

And for the record Nightengale continues to be a terrible reporter. Alexander was up for arbitration, so what happened here was a contract to avoid it. He wasn’t going anywhere so they’re not “bringing back” Alexander unless they were plannng to non-tender him. Which they obviously were not. Keep up the good work Bob!

1) Deferrals, in theory, allow you to offer more than a team making a standard offer. Maybe Rizzo (and/or the Lerners) thinks he's a great salesman and can pitch a very good annual salary plus deferrals that add up to a competitive overall number.
2) They feel like they need to demonstrate to the fans that they're making the effort.
3) The Nats know Rendon likes DC and would like to stay there and they think they can leverage that into accepting a lesser offer.
For the record, I don't think any of these are good reasons.

well considering the offer with deferrals was supposedly 210-215 million- that's hardly making more than a standard offer. When the comp is Arenado from Colorado at 232 Million. It seems like Rizzo is trying to get off on the cheap.
Hopefully Rizzo gets the dumb as hell deferrals out of his mind and makes a deal.

I don’t know if there’s any truth behind it but there’s speculation/wishful thinking that Rendon might not want to play much longer and would be open to a shorter term deal with much larger AAV. Whether Rendon/Boras would really do that is the key question but it’s easier to imagine the Dodgers offering 4/160 than 7/250.

I would think it's the opposite, that MLB teams would want high profile free agents to start taking shorter term deals, so that the teams can then point to those shorter contracts when negotiating with second tier free agents, who would get shorter deals without the huge AAV that players like Rendon can get.
The Pomeranz contract was mentioned earlier in this thread -- that's an example of how the clubs would profit if the market could be shifted in the direction of giving guys like Pomeranz the same AAV in a shorter contract.

I disagree.... They don't want the cost for a guy like Rendon to be 40 million vs a guy like Arenado at around 32 million. That blows up the entire salary structure. Same with pitchers.
And if a guy like Rendon gets 40, what would Betts get????

Buster Olney thinks Rendon could be the first big FA to go.
Quote:As reported in September, friends of Rendon believe he's not going to take the conventional path through free agency. Rather than look for a long-term deal that lasts into his late 30s, they think he's more interested in a deal in the range of five years, presumably for a higher average annual salary. In fact, some executives believe that Rendon's forthcoming contract could establish a record for highest annual value.
And of course this tidbit...
Quote:The Dodgers have coveted Rendon because of his perfect fit with their hitting approach and their financial strategy.

yeah Dodgers are concerning for sure.....
Do think we see what Boras plan is here.... He got Moustakas signed quickly and off the market... Now only 2 3b left- and only Rendon is in prime.
Wheeler supposedly will be done quickly. Probably Ryu as well. Leaves Big 2 with a lot less competition.

4/64 for a 2ish fWAR 3B - yikes.
Quote:Wheeler supposedly will be done quickly. Probably Ryu as well.
Wheeler is already fielding 9 figure offers. Lots of chatter about Ryu and Twins.
Local talk radio guy this morning asks why the Dodgers would go after Strasburg when they could probably more easily get a cy young candidate, top of the rotation guy with a checkered injury history (Ryu). Answer: Only one of these guys led his team to NL and WS pennants. Is there a GM alive who would choose Ryu over Strasburg for anything other than financial reasons? (This is funny: Boras is selling Ryu by saying even thought he's 32, he's more like a 26 or 27 year old in Innings Pitched).

I sure don't think so Brookes. That's crazy.
I would kind of like Ryu if we lost Stras.

Good point here on the Angels' perennial disappointment.
Quote:Want to know why Mike Trout has never won a playoff game? Since joining the Angels full time in 2012, the Angels have never had a starting rotation in the top half of the major leagues by FanGraphs WAR (fWAR). Their average ranking during that time has been 22nd, including dead last in 2019.

ChiSox continue to look like a team that is going for it in 2020. They're in on Wheeler and also rumored talking to Dodgers about Joc Pederson. I'm of mixed feelings on that last one. Pederson has been good, but mostly as a platoon, but also (one of the few) good in the playoffs. On the other hand, if they're trying to move him (and rumors are they're open to moving "higher priced players") they're planning to bring guys in. So let's see...
