I love how stupid some Nats fans are thinking that they should push take it or leave it offers for Stras and Rendon. Wanting to basically reinvent free agency.... How ******* stupid is that.

Braves working on their bullpen a bit, I see. Braves signed Newnan, GA native (just south of the metro area) Will Smith for 3 years at $13 mil a year ($39 milluion overall, with a 1 year option for another $13 mil or a $1 million buy-out in 2023. Boy, I'd like to have a $1 million for not taking a job :).
I'm not so sure of just what Braves GM Anthropoulos is doing so far. Committing so much money to a relatively old bullpen while neglecting (so far) catcher and possible SP, not to mention 3B (not seeing us win the derby to re-sign Donaldson, and not sure we should commit to more than 2 years of him anyway--Moustakis might be our better option, because Rendon ain't comin' here I don't guess) for a team that traditionally (since the Ted Turner days, anyway) doesn't spend much above middle of the pack (and we're relatively close to that with a LOT of needs yet unmet is a bit of a head-scratcher.
But, it is early on, so perhaps he has a lot more moves in mind: trades of some of these guys as flips, trades of some of our stockpile of pitchers who didn't show well in their stints in the majors, or some minor league prospect trades, might well be in the offing. He did a good job last season, with the very notable exception of the failure with Dallas Kan'tchel, who was a bust, especially at the bloated price he got even after the QO was removed in June. I'm interested in how he'll put it all together for season's start but nervous. Braves have started slowly past few years, and it's almost a given that any pitcher on the team at season's start has a higher probability of dropping off somehow before a month or two goes by as remaining on the big league roster, either due to injury or failure or whatnot.
CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Chicago White Sox have signed free agent catcher Yasmani Grandal to a four-year-contract, the team announced Thursday. The deal is worth $73 million and Grandal will get $18.25 million each season, the White Sox said.

so he got 5/91 basically out of this when you include last year..

like the fa market being so active so early.
Yes, this is a good sign.
Confirms Grandal did the right thing after 2018. Turned down an $18MM QO from LA and 4/60 from the Mets for, as you note, 5/91. That's a nice bump.

it'll be interesting to see what Ryu gets as well.....

Starting pitcher coming off a second place finish in Cy Young vote - his market ought to be energetic. I’m guessing: 1) he’s going to get a big number, and 2) it’s not going to be from the Dodgers.

Free Agent market off to a really strong start. All 4 FA signings(or rework for Abreu) way over the projection Fan Graphs made...
I really want to believe this means the Hot Stove is truly heating up.
And I was going to make a snide remark in my post yesterday about Grandal having to play for the White Sox but it seems like they're actually trying to win. AL Central might be a little interesting in 2020.

AL Central is really the widest open division, and will probably continue to be so.
None of the 5 teams are really financial powerhouses that can spend huge dollars every year - all have limitations based on fan base, markets, etc.
I absolutely love how the folks on Fan Graphs still really think Kershaw is good....
Their projections have him as the #8 pitcher in 2020. better than Buehler....
It's **** like that IMO hurts the cause for advanced metrics.... I can get Sale being #5 I believe it was..... think he's going to totally bounce back(I don't agree, but whatever- it at least passes the smell test). But Kershaw? Does anyone on the planet other then them think he's going to start 32 games or throw 204 innings(thus beefing up his projected WAR). That's just dumb.....
I get this love affair with how good he was....….. BUT he's NOT the same guy and will never be the same guy.

Quote:The Atlanta Braves signed catcher Travis d'Arnaud to a two-year, $16 million contract on Sunday, the team announced. He gets $8 million in each of the next two seasons and agreed to donate $80,000 annually to charity.
The 30-year-old d'Arnaud split last season between the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays. After struggling to hit with both the Mets, he got only one at-bat with the Dodgers before rebounding with the Rays, hitting .263 with 16 home runs and 67 RBIs.
He played 92 games for the Rays, seeing most of his time at catcher (76 games, 62 starts) but also made 16 starts at first base with 21 games overall at the position. The Braves are in need of a catcher after Brian McCann retired after the end of last season.
D'Arnaud is a career .246 hitter with 63 home runs and 231 RBIs in 500 games over seven seasons.
