RE: Childers not shying away from competition
I think the best player that gives them the best chance to win will be the starter. That could be Childers. Bowers had a good season, but he was beat out and this is a legitimate shot to start.
Also, there is coach speak and player speak. Player speak is I welcome competition but in reality he is

I didn't think he was beat out for the job, he had an injury.

Childers might have "looked ok" in practices in the past but on the field in a game is where his true colors come out. The guy has no good QB instincts. Put any pressure on him & his decision making goes in the toilet. He can't see open receivers. He holds onto the ball like it's stuck in his hand with glue. Or he keeps it , runs up the middle for no gain.
I'm ready for a new beginning - a new QB. Looking forward to this fall!
In fairness to him (Childers) and to all our QB's, I suspect (highly) that what you refer to and what we saw is the product of his then coach being in his head to do those things, i.e., hold the ball, don't force it, don't throw and interception, check down, just run. I strongly suspect that. You could almost see it in him. And the history is any QB that did not do that in the previous coaching regime, was not allowed to play QB. I do not know this, but I suspect it. And the second half of the MACC game to me supports this theory.

It allows the potential to do more things, but in no way does that guarantee more success. There's plenty of downside with giving college kids that much freedom.

Simplifying doesn't necessarily mean "holding back." I think Lynch would have been a disaster in a complex offense.

Childers couldn’t connect in the one or two deep patterns they ran. Why would more deep routes help? They’d just be different deep misses.

2019 NIU Football is going to be a fun ride.
I think it is a token competition for QB. Bowers is not transferring to NIU to sit on the bench. Not to slam DeKalb, but it is not the destination of destinations to sit back with the clipboard and enjoy the sights and sounds of the city.
If Bowers is coming here because he was guaranteed the starting job, then he is a mental midget. He was sold that we are switching to a more pro style offense and he has that skill set. Childers may or may not be able to change to fit this new style but he is not a quiter.
I forgot who posted this but they were spot on, it will be labeled a competition, but in reality something very dramatic would have to happen for it to be Childers. With the abuse and attacks Childers takes here, I kind of thought everyone would assume that

No way to accurately evaluate Childers in that offense though. The offense was almost literally designed to fail

The offense sucked. But accuracy is accuracy. He made the same mistakes in the scrimmage, missing open receivers downfield. He just has zero touch on that pass. I’d like him to throw more posts and slants. I think he’s better at those.

I think there was a reason he was not accurate , he knew he would lose his job with interceptions. It was just an awful situation the last few years with Carey, playmakers were not allowed to make plays and the fear of the mistake was paralyzing. Punting was seen as a successful drive, literally

The offense was productive against very bad teams in the MAC when the conference was much weaker, but not so much against good teams when it was needed most. It also did not hurt to have a guy like Golladay you could throw a jump ball too. NIU needs an offensive system that can be sustained and be productive against good teams, that is not so sensitive to having the once in a lifetime type players of a Jordan Lynch or Kenny Golladay. I think Hammock is taking NIU there

If you look at the Sagarin ratings for the past 10 years you'll see that both NIU and the MAC had higher ratings back in the 2010 to 2014 years. The offense got worse despite a weaker MAC.

Childers and Graham are almost the same guy. Graham just seemed so awful relative to the qbs who came before him. But given the same amount of attempts, Childers and Graham produce identical numbers.
MC: 3,849 yds, 5.8 y/a, 31 td, 15 int, 118 rating. 1,004 rush yds, 3.0 y/a
