700+ NCAA basketball players planning to transfer
Heard this 2-3 weeks ago after tourney on radio station in NWI. Only caught a minute or 2 of Valpo coach talking. They referred to players filing for it, not confirmed. Imagine #has gone up from there.

On one side of the spectrum you have to realize that there is well over 300 teams. And as of lately a great # of transfer grads which they stated, as have other basketball experts nationally, is becoming an issue. But then you look and see how many teams have zero, one vs. 3+. Sort of a bell curve I would imagine.

Thought it was interesting especially with all the transfer talk, analysis on here.

It's been up around 900 the last few years so, if it stays under 800 (I doubt it will), it would be a decrease.

Ultimately, I'm not sure what you can do about it. The system is already stacked against the players as it is. The players are just finally starting to exercising their rights.

This also could be an issue with recruiting (from the HS or AAU coaches standpoints). Places like CPS and AAU often don't care if a program is a good fit for a kid as long as the school is in a major conference or is a top 25 typical team. I don't pretend to know about many of the transfers, but there are a lot right now going to community colleges. It makes you scratch your head why. On one hand, if a player is going to have to sit out a year, they might as well play for one of those top JUCO programs and improve their stock. But you see a lot of players also transfering to either mid-major programs or DII or DIII. The ones going to mid-majors probably should have just gone to a mid-major to begin with but got an in with a major, took it, and then realized they could have been a starter on a different team but are destined to ride the bench and be practice fodder where they are.

This happens a lot. And from the coaches' perspective (HS or AAU) they get to talk to players about how they have X amount of players who signed with major programs whether or not the kid stayed there or not.

Either way, I can never fault a player for looking to improve their situation. People like to often cite the "free education" the players receive but they're still limited by the programs available. Many of these kids probably don't put a lot of thought or stock into the major they are interested in when picking a school. But once they're there, and it becomes obvious they aren't a star anymore, their education may actually become more important. If a kid changes majors or decides to go to a school that has a better program and can still get a scholarship, it just happens to be at Wright State as opposed to Oklahoma State, then that's a good move for the kid. If he then also becomes a starter at the new school, bonus.
