That said, Green is a PF / C but could be considered a replacement for Madray.
The more I think about it, the more I wouldn't be surprised if there is more attrition. Just seems like we are going to have way too many forwards again. A front court of Thompson, Minnie, Nobles, Harris, Steele, Groce, Epps, LWH, and now Green, is quite a surplus. It's a bit nerve-wracking that only Jackson, Bond, Silver, and Ellison could be considered guards.
I know Murphy LOVES having size and athleticism, and we are going to have plenty of that, but can we survive we 4 guards? Two of whom are freshmen?
From the small amount of film I've seen of our newcomers I would classify Groce, Epps, Harris, and Silver as "wings". Bond as well, though he has shown the ability to run point along with Jackson and Ellison.
True frontcourt players would be Steele, Thompson, LWH, and Green. Nobles and Minnie you could say are frontcourt with some wing abilities.
Good point: Wings are wings. They are somewhat interchangeable parts.
I always assume the big 'issue' is that size (length), meaning, a 6 '2" wing might be a nice SG but would be too short to defend at the SF position.
In the case of our wings, most are pretty lengthy so a 6' 6" SF or 6' 6" SG are pretty much the same.
Not necessarily, in regards to wings. If we have a lineup of Jackson, Nobles, Minnie, Thompson, and Steele, it would provide nice length defensively, but would be a nightmare offensively. Our front court players aren't the type to beat their man off the dribble (unknown with Minnie), which is something that is important for guards to do. That's why I don't like lumping them all together as "wings".
My guess is that either Groce or Silver plays quite a bit as a frosh. Whichever one shows that they've picked up the speed of the college game the most. Both appear to have smooth jumpers and can beat their man one-on-one, from watching their high school tapes.
If there is more attrition with the addition of Green (LWH?), then it would behoove us to pick up a JUCO guard. I don't think Murphy is done yet.
Not sure I follow you Sam.
I'm not with you of whom you count as wings. I count players like Bond, Harris, Groce, Epps, Bernard (if he signs), etc.
I have Silver as a SG. I have Nobles as a SF. I don't count them as wings as Silver is too short to play SF and Nobles isn't a SG.
I count JT4, Steele, Minnie, LWH, Green, etc. a post players (centers/PF).
