The problem is, there is nothing schedule-wise that supports a G5 auto-bid. Schedule four P5 teams out of conference, go undefeated, and they’re in.

Oh, and there are definitely a lot things being said about a 5-3. One piece just came out of Virginia.

I'm sure there is. I know Delaney kept talking about 5-1-2 on his farewell tour. Few people in position to discuss (or know what's being discussed) will go on the record. So he's the highest ranking official (or former official) who's been quoted.

But I can say for certain that any new plan that doesn't include some kind of guaranteed access for the G5 will absolutely be met with an antitrust lawsuit. And given how well the powers that be have done with legislation, whether it was fighting the formation of the CFA or the O'Bannon name and likeness litigation, I suspect they'll be more likely to avoid it than not.

The question isn't whether any Go5 deserves it but whether there is a risk of successful anti-trust lawsuits against the arrangement.

Being an invitational doesn't guarantee that it's not restraint of trade ... plenty of the original trusts that were made illegal in the early 1900's were created on an invitational basis.

But a 5-2-1, with the "1" going to the highest ranking among the Go5 champions or independents, seems like it would surmount that, and the media bidders would prefer that to a Go5 spot.

Didn’t the BCS only get the threat of anti-trust when they were leaving out teams that were ranked high enough, but passed over?

So with three wildcards, the G5 and Independent teams theoretically have a chance. Exhibit A: Notre Dame.

I seem to remember FSU and Miami (later Louisville under Howard S.) scheduling anybody, anywhere, in order to prove themselves.

Now you are getting into what the relevant precedents say regarding something like the relative discrimination of the winner of the P5 CCG being immune from being knocked out by At-Large teams from two or three P5 conferences, and the Go5 and Independents subject to it.

As far as that, I don't know, IANDL. Even if I knew where to look those precedents up, I probably couldn't afford to do so, because my (Chinese) college doesn't have a US law school so no subscription to those databases.

I do know that the affected parties are the ones with the strongest standing, so if they make an offer that is appealing enough to get rest of the FBS to sign on the dotted line, they take the potential plaintiffs with the strongest standing off the table.

If the P5 calls it the P5 Invitational, how is it anti-trust? It’s not an NCAA sanctioned championship.

What we have now is a slow schism similar to the 1-A/1-AA split.
