That looks like a new version of an old favorite. The hamburgers at the one in Whitehaven were named after colonial war hero's.

Yeah, I cheated. This one is actually in El Dorado and I think it's still open. The menu in Raleigh was something like:

#1 Thousand Island-type spread with onion.
#2 Hickory Smoke Sauce (add cheese or onion to make it the best)
#3 Old-Fashioned with mustard, Pickle and Onion.
#4 Old-Fashioned cheeseburger . . . #3 add grated Cheddar Cheese.
#5 Chili, Cheese and Onion
#6 Salad Burger #1 sauce, Lettuce & Tomato.
#7 Ham Sandwich with same dressings as #6
#8 Cheddar Cheese Sandwich with same dressinngs as #6.
#9 Western Omelette Sandwich with same dressings as #6.
#10 Steak Sandwich Mayo, Lettuce and Tomato.
#11 Fish Sandwich with Tarter Sauce and catsup.
#12 Big M Two Patties with American Cheese slice in middle . . . #1 sauce, pickle, onion, tomato.

I drove over it, and that lane in particular , about 5-10 minutes before it collapsed. Me and a car full of friends drove across and got on the interstate heading for the Summer Drive Inn. I remember we looked at the water and it was about 6 inches from coming over the bridge. When we were coming home and got off at that exit, the bridge was blocked and you could see the water was even with where the miising lanes should be.04-jawdrop

that photo is enough to make you weep. i loved that place

From earlier in this thread: East Memphis Motor Company, at the northeast corner of Cooper and Madison. Caddycorner from Burkle's Bakery, Lafayette's Music Room, and Friday's.

This is the original Garage building at that site that was turned into Godfathers. Didn't the Ernie Barrasso guy that organized those Vegas gambling junket flights own Godfathers? He used to own The Thunderbird Lounge.

My parents still live near Perkins and Mallory about two blocks from the bridge. My sister worked at a place on the corner of Perkins and American Way called Rueben's/CoCo's. She drove across that bridge minutes before it collapsed. All the business's around Perkins and American Way closed due to no traffic except Shoney's which later closed. American Way wasn't complete but they expedited the work due to the collapse.

I also dated a gal (we often went to Solomon Alfred's) whose father developed the Mall of Memphis and was sued because they excavated the river bed. He died of a heart attack prior to learning the cause was timber building up at the bridge causing an undercurrent that washed away the footings and not his fault.

I grew up there also. Drove over 20 min.s before. My Dad taught Bill in high school and he would come by and visit from time to time as would alot of his old students. got to shoot hoops with him a couple of times. He wore a size 16 shoe, funny how some things just stick in your memory. They tore down Shakeys pizza and Als golfdom to build the mall and surrounding area. Not a happy time for me.

Pop Tunes is (was) a true Memphis landmark. It was owned and operated by my relatives. I spent many an hour in that place and have some great and fond memories of times past in there. Truely a Memphis treasure that is sadly no more.

That right there is a blast from the past. Right down the street from my elementary school, too. Spent many a summer night there as a little kid eating blue slushie thing they had (or rainbow slush depending on what colors I was more attracted to at the moment).

When the Kennedy Complex was first built. I stopped after baseball practice everyday on my way home for a large grape, at the Sno Cream Castle. I loved that place. When I lived in Sherwood Forest, we hit it quite often.

I searched for a pic. But I never found one. Loved the Sno Cream, loved the Rebel, love Jerry's. My first ice cream place in Memphis that I loved was a place in South Memphis called "Somewhere." Corner of Biscayne, and 61. Small but great soft serve Chocolate Ice Cream.

I've never seen nor knew about that (of course, I haven't lived anywhere near Memphis in a billion years). Tell me more, sir.

That's a memorial to Tom Lee.

Here's a description about it from wikipedia
Quote:The park is named after Tom Lee, an African-American riverworker, who saved the lives of 32 passengers of the sinking steamboat M.E. Norman in 1925.[1]

The memorial was built in '06.

That's a memorial to Tom Lee. The african-american(he may have been a slave at the time) who helped pull 30 something people out the river after a steam boat sank. I believe that's the story. The memorial isn't that old. It's only about a year or two old.

Well, I guess I should have figured that out. Thanks. Very nice.

Maywood counts, wasn't it called the "Beach within Reach."
