Because Ohio State is the only 1 of the 8 FBS schools that plays "big time football" many students and alums from the other 7 schools see nothing wrong with identifying themselves as "Buckeye fans" first because the school they earned their degree from isn't covered the same way by the Sports Media. And they see nothing wrong with this.

The problem is that these people are earning a degree from a quality public university in the state and then spending the rest of their adult lives giving their support, and more importantly, their $$$$, to a school they don't have a degree from and whose alums they are competing with for jobs.

Every weekend in the fall my Facebook feed is full of comments from friends who went to OU, UC, Miami, etc cheering on their Buckeyes. It is nauseating. The monopoly must be broken.

I get what you are saying, but how is Ohio State responsible for Kent State or Ohio or Toledo students that don't care about MAC football and would rather follow Big 10 football?

To me thats a failure of those schools if they cant instill any pride or loyalty in their students and not the fault of the school they are choosing to follow instead.

Ohio State has no problem playing MAC schools, they refuse to play Cincinnati, Xavier and Dayton because they think if OSU doesn't play those schools there will not be conflict in SW Ohio between rooting interests (so you can root for OSU and UC/XU/UD simultaneously).

Sounds like a smart strategy for Ohio State.

OSU doesn't owe games to every school in the state of Ohio. If they choose not to play those schools, thats their business. I've always said the government has no business forcing schools to play each other.

I personally wrote Texas State legislatures trying to make UT/A&M an annual game by law to tell them to get back to work and stop trying to interfere with UT's athletic decisions. If they don't want to play A&M anymore then that is their choice and government needs to stay the hell out of it.

The whole "they owe it to the taxpayers" argument is BS because athletic departments are private organizations paid for entirely or in majority by private donations and so their decisions are not the purview of the state.

Because Ohio State football DOMINATES the media market. Every small town paper covers the Buckeyes. Students and fans can't care about or follow a school or conference if nobody is covering it. Solich's home debut with Ohio in 2005 was the first time Ohio football was ever broadcast on ESPN. 2005!

How could Ohio ever compete with Ohio State for fans when their first appearance EVER on ESPN was just 8 years ago? Growing up in Ohio I never heard about any of the good MAC teams of the time so Ohio State became the de facto college team to root for.

It's like asking why a local burger joint doesn't have as many customers as McDonalds. It doesn't matter who has the better burger, McDonalds has more customers because its in more locations and is all over print and TV.

Give the other 7 schools the same chance Ohio State has had to earn fans.

Again none of that is Ohio State's fault. They have the most in demand product so they get the most coverage.

Vilifying them will not solve the issue.

If Ohio fans want more attention they need to stop trying to regulate OSU and start promoting OU. To get coverage they have to be a fan base worth marketing to. One with rabid, passionate fans that go to every game , wear the green and white every Friday and mass petition Ohio media for more bobcat coverage.

UNC-CH is the flagship school in NC.
UNC-CH is the oldest public university in the country.
UNC-CH is the hardest public school in the state to get admitted into.
NCSU is the land grant university in NC.
NCSU is the second hardest public school in the state to get admitted into.
NCSU is the largest school in the state.
UNC is not UNC-CH. UNC is the system of 17 universities in the state.

Gee offered to cancel his commencement speech at a Columbus, Ohio Catholic high school.

Oh is that it all it takes? MAC schools just have to want it more? You haven't paid attention to anything I've said. First, I'm not trying to take anything away from OSU. The system has created a deliberate divide between the haves and the have nots. Let MAC schools get what Indiana gets for being a god awful football program fortunate enough to be in one of the Chosen conferences, and those schools can stand a chance to build a program that can compete with a program like Ohio State. The financial inequity make it impossible.

You're asking me to build an operating system that could compete with Microsoft Windows but you're telling me I have to do it without having the opportunity to have my OS pre-installed on any new PCs. Gee, I wonder which one will be more popular.

Frankly this goes much deeper than you know. There are many children born in Ohio who are given OSU gear while in the hospital as standard.

The public schools often have "OSU" days where you are expected to wear their stuff and if you wear anything else you are to be vilified. My cousin was bullied for daring to wear a Kent State shirt in a school in the Kent school system. They treated it like cheering for a MAC school was "anti Ohio" when you could be wearing an OSU shirt.

It would be like saying cheering for A&M made you anti Texas and having 75% of the state believe it. I am sorry that some schools did not get your resources handed to us on a silver platter or get a cult of personality to draw people. Most of the Ohio schools have to actually work and do things the hard way. MAC schools have to earn almost every fan they get because they are not going to get freebie T Shirt fans like OSU does.

Ohio State has been able to indoctrinate its population better than almost any single school in the country. The only other school in its class would be Penn State and I would give the advantage to Ohio State.

On that note we are making progress but it is so slow. Ask the Ohio fans and they will tell how it is getting better over there. I can vouch in the Akron/Cleveland area that it is getting better. I am seeing more MAC school related items and shows. It is not much yet but it is progress and frankly the schools need to keep trying.

As for whether MAC schools would support making multiple flagships I think it would depend on whether any of them would be made a flagship. In the one section it talked about saying how Cleveland and Cincinnati should have one. If Cleveland was allowed to have Kent State as a flagship then you may see some support, however if that happens it may still be shot down since the other MAC schools may feel left out (not sure but it could happen). I can say for usre that if only Cincy was going to get it then the MAC schools would be against it.

On a related note: Cincy people, what do you think of Ono so far? From the outside he seems like a strong advocate for the school as an all-around academic and athletic institution.

@PrezOno: Now is the time for Ohio to move beyond a single flagship model to one where there is genuine strategic support for multiple universities

@PrezOno: The great university systems in the US are mature enough to embrace the concept of multiple world class campuses eg Berkeley, UCSF, UCSD...

This is about way more than athletics. It is about research money and economic development in the state.

I think he has a great point, and I wish him success in his venture. People are missing the point that the real place to attack the Big 5 is through the state legislature.

Right now, part of the money from research grants at universities goes to paying overhead. What if the same was true for money passed on by conferences? What if every school in Ohio that received more than $15 million from their conference had to split that money with the states general education fund as the payout to the state for starting and supporting the university?

Look at it from the perspective of the soccer mom. Suddenly, a bunch of money that would have gone to luxury locker rooms will now go to improving the states educational system, which will help the academics of the entire state. That is something that will appeal to the state in general, and has the possibility to pass in the state house.

Go Cougs!!!!!

Ohio State football is another one of those programs that were esteemed back in the 40's, 50's and 60's when there was absolutely no competition for the fans across these states and it would be very, very hard to break 50 or 60 years of this kind of tradition. Other examples would be UK basketball, Nebraska football, UNC basketball, Kansas basketball, etc. Remember back in the aforementioned years there were no Bengals and the Browns were the only competition in the state, all college football fans flocked to watch OSU and the tradition has now been handed down through three generations. If you want to put the blame on someone for UC's lot in life, then blame all the past administrations that sat on their collective hands and did nothing about moving UC up the food chain.

I get what you are saying, but how is Ohio State responsible for Kent State or Ohio or Toledo students that don't care about MAC football and would rather follow Big 10 football?

To me that's a failure of those schools if they cant instill any pride or loyalty in their students and not the fault of the school they are choosing to follow instead.

And how do you propose that? Forcing local papers to cover MAC schools as much as Ohio State? Forcing ESPN to give prime time space to MAC football?

Again none of that is Ohio State's fault. They have the most in demand product so they get the most coverage.

Vilifying them will not solve the issue.

If Ohio fans want more attention they need to stop trying to regulate OSU and start promoting OU. To get coverage they have to be a fan base worth marketing to. One with rabid, passionate fans that go to every game , wear the green and white every Friday and mass petition Ohio media for more bobcat coverage.

I can also attest to this. Really, outside of the Cincinnati area, every where in the state is a bunch of OSU fans. It is like a cult. The only school that makes any head way is UC and to a lesser extent OU. The reason OSU continues to attack UC in various ways is because inside they know strides UC has been making the past 10-15 years both athletically and academically. By not playing UC OSU tries to maintain that best team in the state attitude, at least in football. At least UC has history and respect in basketball or else I would say the same thing in that sport to.

I agree with Ono that it is unhealthy to have the state behind one school we have seen it in various other states with multiple other schools.

Im still waiting for your solution because you seem to be saying something to the effect of "the MAC deserves equal money to the Big 10" which is just not true.

Indiana may not have great football but they are a Flagship university with a statewide fan base. Every single school in the Big 10 besides NW is also a large public flagship and or land grant with big, statewide fan bases that let them command such big contracts.

So my question still stands: how do you see Ohio and the MAC getting to where you want them to be?

Under the terms of a 12 year deal with ESPN the 10 FBS level conferences get $470 million+, starting in 2014. But before a game is even played it is determined that 5 Conferences will get 71.5% of that, the other 5 will only get 27%. So even though we're all in the same Football Bowl Subdivision, Ohio State gets a piece of a pie worth up to $250 million, the other 7 FBS schools in the state get a piece from a pie worth only about $95m. Regardless of how well schools or entire conferences do a grossly unfair distribution model is set that keeps the Rich rich, and the Poor poor.

This has nothing to do with the money an individual school makes off of ticket sales, donations, and merchandise. The money from this contract is for ALL of the Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision teams. This is an unfair distribution model that splits these 10 conferences that are supposed to be on equal footing into the Haves and Have Nots.

How do I see Ohio and the MAC getting where I want them to be? Let's start with a fair distribution model of money for the league.

You say fair but ask yourself:

Who created that money that is being split up?

It didn't just appear out of nowhere, it was created because schools like Ohio State command huge audiences. Ohio created none of that money but wants an equal share to what Ohio State created and that is fair?

That's like saying a brand new intern should be paid the same as the Chief of Oncology because they are both doctors.

Columbus is scared of another public or private school knocking the Buckeyes off their high horse. I would love hear from Toledo fans but I do know that in Cincinnati the Buckeyes are just another name regional team like Kentucky, Notre Dame, Indiana and Michigan. They have a following but the Reds, Bengals, Bearcats, and Muskies get top media coverage by far.

The idiots in Columbus have hurt Miami and Cincinnati when it comes to funding longstanding PhD programs, which has forced both schools to make cuts. Those schools have reputations to compete with Ohio State in certain programs and that must scare somebody. Ohio State was just another state school, a backup for most students when I was in high school.

I actually don't need the money. Kent State manages to excel in sports without it. All I want is the ability to continue to compete at the highest level where our sports prowess prove is where we belong. I do want us to have a fair chance at competing which currently I do not believe is the case in football. I understand that the more powerful schools want to have more access and I think they can earn that nearly every year but I do think there is room to give a school like Kent a legitimate shot in a playoff like structure. Heck even if it includes Kent having to play in a play in game I would take it to have an official, if unlikely, shot at a title. Kent is technically able to do it in any other sport by winning football is the only sport that they cannot play for a championship due to the whims of several voting bodies.

I have a feeling they have it worse with Michigan not too far away...

Who created the money that is being split up? ALL of the teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision, that is who.

Ohio State commands huge audiences? Good for them. Have we already discussed the advantages they have? Yes. Pay attention.

Ohio has created none of that? NONE? Ohio has been a D-1 program for ages. They didn't just show up with a hand out.

Ohio State will continue to make the bajillions of dollars they've "earned" though selling tickets and merchandise and donations, that is their reward for their success.

But money that is designated for everyone in a group should go to everyone in that group with reasonable equity. A 71.5% to 27% split is NOT reasonable.
