Stoudamire doing more bench coaching?
Someone commented on the UT site that they observed during the game that Damon Stoudamire was doing more of the bench coaching, calling plays, correcting players, etc. than Pastner. I wasn't at the game, but is this true? Could this be a reason for the better performance of the team?

Geez, imagine coaches coaching during games, next thing you know they will be coaching during practice, and heck, they might even recruit a little, go figure

I've watched the game three times already and I can assure you Pastner was doing plenty of coaching. Good grief.

From head coach down to the assistants, they should all be coaching players during the game. More importantly, stop getting your Memphis news from UT message boards. We don't need that ignorance spreading west from Knoxville.

Exactly (the bolded part) ... some of you fellow posters may want to check out this thread, especially points #5 and #11

I don't think many UT fans know much about basketball in general, or what the role of assistant coaches are in particular. Stoudamire ran a few huddles, when Pastner was speaking withs refs, individual players, Jimmy Williams, etc. Aki Collins ran a few. Josh ran most. I'm sure Collins was in charge of the rotations.
Nothing different than the other games in which Pastner has coached.
Thanks so much. Very informative.

RE: Stoudamire doing more bench coaching?
The UT fan's mantra regarding Memphis is that Pastner is a great recruiter but cannot coach. His inability to coach will lose him games he should've won and in the end, his ability to recruit will suffer and he will be terminated. Counzo Martin, on the other hand, is an amazing game coach and motivator, but struggles to recruit against the entrenched Pastner. Once Pastner is gone, the fruits of the Memphis Metro recruiting scene will bequeath to Counzo by default.
UT was thoroughly outcoached on Friday, even though Martin had a week to prepare. Since this fact and the UT mantra cannot co-exist, someone else besides Pastner must have coached this game. UT fans only know one of our assistant coaches by name, and an assistant coach is most likely to do the coaching if the Head Coach is not, thus Damon Stoudamire coached most of the game and is responsible for the win.

The team did seem to be more confident and prepared than it usually looks in big games. Whatever was going on on the bench just needs to keep happening.

Seriously? Getting anything from a UTee board as legitimate newsworthy discussion material is like watching Bill & Teds excellent adventure as a hard-hitting historical documentary

They looked very prepared against L'Ville as well. The only difference is this time they gutted it out and held the lead. It is evident that Pastner is developing as a coach.

Is this the same guy that said we only won because of "luck"?

That's the only difference? I thought 5 players fouling out on some BS calls would have been a difference maker. Hard to 'gut it out' from the bench.
