His inability to coach will lose him games he should've won and in the end, his ability to recruit will suffer and he will be terminated. Counzo Martin, on the other hand, is an amazing game coach and motivator, but struggles to recruit against the entrenched Pastner. Once Pastner is gone, the fruits of the Memphis Metro recruiting scene will bequeath to Counzo by default.
UT was thoroughly outcoached on Friday, even though Martin had a week to prepare. Since this fact and the UT mantra cannot co-exist, someone else besides Pastner must have coached this game. UT fans only know one of our assistant coaches by name, and an assistant coach is most likely to do the coaching if the Head Coach is not, thus Damon Stoudamire coached most of the game and is responsible for the win.
Makes perfect sense to me

The team did seem to be more confident and prepared than it usually looks in big games. Whatever was going on on the bench just needs to keep happening.
They looked very prepared against L'Ville as well. The only difference is this time they gutted it out and held the lead. It is evident that Pastner is developing as a coach.
That's the only difference? I thought 5 players fouling out on some BS calls would have been a difference maker. Hard to 'gut it out' from the bench.
Officiating was terrible, no doubt about that. That was not the point of my post though. My point is that in general we have been starting games off much better lately. To me, that is a sign of better pre-game preparation by the coaching staff and I sign that JP is developing as a coach.

Is this the same guy that said we only won because of "luck"?
Lol, they were talking about luck in many threads.
I went there after the game to watch them cry in their beer and I saw that thread too. Most of their posters are fans but only a few really know bball. Most thought Martin was a good coach until they saw how much better the team played actually running in the second half and abandoning Martin’s 1950’s offense.
They said we were lucky when in fact if their top scorers of the game shot their average we would have won by 20+. Add Tarik and its 30+.
If anyone wants a good laugh here’s a link to the thread the OP was referring to…

IIRC Joe said they had a player’s only meeting the day before the game and this could have been part of the reason they played well.
I would liked to have been a fly on the wall in that meeting.

They probably got in a circle, joined hands, prayed, sang "Kumbaya My Lord", and then adjourned...

RE: Stoudamire doing more bench coaching?
Damon Stoudamire is probably gone ... maybe end of the season. Someone's going to snap him up for sure. This coaching staff seems to be more involved this year ... the UT game was a total team effort. Players and coaches.

Watch any game for about 99% of D1 teams. You will see an assistant doing the same. That includes Duke, Kansas, FL, UNC, Georgetown, AZ, etc...

When the shots go in the basket, every thing is 'happy happy happy'.

Why would anyone ask on this board for someone to verify what they read on a UT board. What good can come from this?

Oh, Memphis.
How I love my hometown, but some things never seem to change.

This is one of the dumbest threads ever. He's called an assistant coach for a reason.

Ditto. Thats what I was thinking. Damon is supposed to coach. The statement of him coaching more than Pastner is subjective. Smacks of sour grapes.
