RE: Texas State has sold 21,870 tickets for Texas Tech
I drive past an on-campus stadium that my school hasn't put a football team into in 27 years four days a week.
It pisses me off that UTSA and Texas State will have football teams in the Sun Belt and we won't. We've played Ark St, ULL, and ULM in conference football before. Same with UNT and LA Tech. UTA won the Division I Southland one of the years (Southwest) Texas State won the Division II title.
The students already voted by a 2-1 margin to increase fees and bring it back - eight years ago. I pay an extra $2 a semester hour and have no team to show for it. UTA has been Division I since 1964 and we haven't had football since 1985.
Sorry, it's a sore subject.

You guys should definitely bring it to the SBC... UTSA is in CUSA btw, but whatever I get your point. From what I've seen of your stadium it looks really promising, easily expandable, and if the student support is there... why not? I mean, football in today's day & age can bring a ton of money in and especially being in an FBS conference like the SBC is a HUGE boost. Starting up an FCS program might not be a great idea, but getting a team DEFINITELY into the FBS is a huge step and would be awesome...
For those who haven't seen/searched for Maverick Stadium...

Damn, that's gotta sting for LT to be behind Texas State in ticket sales for the opener. Especially with 6k A&M fans coming in... that's a little (maybe more than a little) disappointing. Maybe they'll have a big walk-up crowd, but even when UL played A&M as USL - and won - they had a huge crowd (wasn't it... 44k or something?). And MT had nearly 31k against GT for our opener last year.

5K from what I recall. After that they have to pay.
They're doing a dumb*** lottery for the 5K. Seriously, the students paid/are paying for this move. I think it's a slap in the face.
Yeah I'd be pissed. Will Texas Tech bring their band?
Good question. I'll go over to the Tech board and inquire and get back with you.
No band. They are only taking their band to the Baylor and TCU games.
Sucks that we aren't bringing our band but I'm still looking forward to the game. With the hype for this game, I purchased 3 season tickets from Tx. State to make sure we had seats.

I agree, they should start up football, especially now that they're in the SBC for all other sports. I've driven down to Arlington to see my cats play the mava in baseball (they have a solid program and a very nice DI baseball facility by-the-way) and have seen the football stadium. It does look like it was designed to be expanded in the future with little or no modification to the structures or grounds already there. In the meantime, they are close to the domed House-of-Jerry which could serve as a temp home. Just a thought.

UTSA fans can thump their chests all they want about having the dome to use (BTW - it is 20 years old so don't throw age at anyone) and they'll throw in the great game day experiences (experts after 1 season) but they have no clue what a real college gameday on your own campus and your own stadium is like.
Lynn Hickey has done a hell of a job but until they get off their asses and build their own they'll never understand what they're missing.
(waiting for the "we'd rather have a 65K crap dome than a 45K on campus facility" argument to rear it's head)
We never said we were gods gift to college football. Oh and why built a campus stadium when we have the Alamodome all to our self's. Need to remember this football program is supported by the city of SA which has a pop. of 1.5mil. Yes it may be 20 years old but up grades are done all the time. Tell me you wouldn't want the dome sitting right next to the outlet mall for TxSt to play in?
Ummm... no thanks. Stadium design has been moving away from domes for some time now (except those with retractable roofs). I have nothing against them (having grown up in Houston and seeing epic battles in the Astrodome). Still, I prefer the uncovered stadium experience... and the college game day experience on campus. I think UTSA will be fine in the dome for a few years. Once more established, I suspect yall will want your own stadium on campus.
I have to agree... Having a 65k capacity is great for UTSA and they're doing very very well for attendance, but if given a choice I would opt for an open stadium. This is not meant as a criticism of the Alamodome, just my personal preference.

Yep. Only the most established programs are truly successful in big-time stadiums like the Alamodome, the LA Superdome, etc. Sometimes it's not exactly an option (Miami playing at SunLife, GSU playing at the GA Dome, Temple at LFF, etc.) but I think that in general the on-campus experience is fun. Doing it right off-campus like UM does really makes the gameday experience great too though.

I am not sure it matters anymore. I was vehemently opposed to football indoors. I am old school. Then I went to the Spring Game in the Georgia Dome in 2010. That changed everything for me. Still, if we had an on campus stadium like UTA has I would have been cool with starting with that and eventually building it to 45k. There is no reason for UTA to use Jerry World.

Love it; I'm right there with you, UTAedu. Have to say it's even tougher for me, since I remember seeing FB there in Maverick Stadium. I'll be right there with you when they restore it, even with the dreadful dreamsicle orange that replaced the red.

For the UTA guys, can you help enlighten me?
If the students passed a resolution to increase fees and bring back football, why hasn't the university moved on it? I mean, our move to FBS was driven almost entirely by the students, so I wonder what is different from y'all's situation to ours.

Bait and switch. They used the increase to fund the new basketball arena.

Just goes to show. Just because our students passed the increase our AD still had to develop and execute the move.

Thanks Larry. Any other insights you'd like to share?
Your statement is a bad joke. The students put it on him to actually make a move and it was EXPLICITLY noted in the resolution that should we not achieve FBS, his blank check would be revoked.
Stop trying to tout Larry as something other than what he is: ABSOLUTELY INADEQUATE to be our AD.

This game should have SOLD OUT already!
Yeah, its a real big game. Like some of those Division 2 teams on your schedule to get rowdy about. Are 800,000 people going to show up for your "games?"
LMAO! South Alabama talking smack about playing division 2 schools? Now I've heard it all.
Anyways, good job TxST. I'm actually planning on attending, hopefully game is not sold out.

Well how about a TROY fan talking some smack Yankee Runner? UTSA needs to learn their place in the FBS world. Start winning titles in the only division that matters, then you will have room to talk some sh*t. I'm a Trojan, we are the most respected of all the SBC programs, pay your respects to us and get lost. No one over here cares to hear your bs, the Roadrunners haven't done a thing in "big boy ball."
You have a lot to learn about FBS football, I hope you as an individual can wise-up someday.
God Bless Troy, God Bless the Sun Belt Conference!

Oh ok sensitive Shirley. I dont see any smack talk at all. I made a sarcastic remark that USA should never talk about playing lower division, given their schedule for first 2 years. That isn't smack, it's a fact. I can post the schedule here if you'd like. In our first year, we've already played more FCS games than USA did in two.
I know our place in the FBS world, it's dead last. I can't see anything on my comment that would suggest otherwise. I know Troy's place too, it's the tallest midget in the SBC.
Anyways, I didn't come here to smack talk and I still don't know how anyone could interpret that from my initial comment. Unless sarcasm is smack talk, but sarcasm isn't so without a thread of truth behind it. I just came to congratulate TXST. I hate them and all, but you can never deny the beauty of their stadium. And I'm hoping to be at the Tech game.
Sorry to have rattled your cage big boss. I'll get out of here and let you bask in your national success.

The Alamodome my serve UTSA purposes now but....
FACT: Playing off campus and/or in a dome sucks for college football.
Example 1) Houston played off campus in a dome for years but moved to an open air stadium on campus and is now spending millions to build a new open air stadium on campus.
Example 2) Minnesota played off campus in a dome for years and spent millions on a new open air stadium on campus.
Example 3) Tulane has played off campus in a dome for years but is now spending millions to build a new open air stadium on campus.

It really just depends. I have been to San Antonio many times and the main problem is that the stadium is 12 miles from the campus. This is the same problem with Miami playing in Sun Life. Its very hard to develop a game day atmosphere when your students are a 20 to 30 minutes from the stadium. The Georgia Dome is 4 blocks from the center of GSU's campus and you dont hear many complaints if any. The difference is that it is a football stadium whereas the Metrodome and AstroDome were/are multi purpose facilities. All of the seats and site lines in the Georgia Dome are perfect for football. The Tulane situation I understand as they are a small private school. There is no way they are ever going to have crowds of 50k when their enrollment is maybe a 5th of that. It's not the same situation as say USF at RayJay, where you're talking about a school with an enrollment of nearly 50k with maybe 4 times that many alumni.
