I apologize for posting an interesting website that had a lot of good information.

I thought there might be a few historical buffs (i.e. those that appreciated/admired the war strategy on both sides...which were filled with good decisions and bad).

I apologize as the kiddies have invaded this thread with zero interest in the initial post.

There is huge section of Texas that still wants to go back to the Republic of Texas. It's not a coincidence that Ron Raul is there congressman.

Very nice article. Thank you for sharing.

It is interesting reading your comments. While I have been fortunate as a student to certain parts of the country and the world (except for the deep South) it is interesting to read these comments as a Hispanic. Makes that saying about living in El Paso sort of true, as sad as it is...we in our own little world out here and assume that when someone moves, it'll be the same in their new location.

We're not going to start this lame bull$hit again, are we?

The South seceded over the issue of slavery. The North won, and that was a good thing. If the whole thing happened all over again, the people in the South would be traitors and terrorists.

What part of the north? I know where I lived in NJ there were plenty of rednecks and I don't even want to talk about the rednecks in PA or the worst racist I have ever encountered world wide in the Boston area.

Wrong. And there are more than just Southern white males who are very dissatisfied with centralized, big government.

Do tell. What WAS the Civil War fought over? States' rights? States' rights to do what, exactly?

Fuel their economic engines with human bondage, perhaps?

Nope, I'm right on the money. Those Southern white males that you describe are idiots. There would be just as many in the South who would fight back against them, and would put those morons in their place.

There is a Confederate flag waving on the Tampa side of I-4. Orlando is the Union side of I-4. I'm conflicted. 03-lmfao

My neighbor flies that flag. I told him the war's over and that side lost. We don't talk about his flag any more.

Slavery was one issue that lead to the civil war but it wasn't even the main issue until after the war started and Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It's like most political situations where a number of underlying issues cause friction then one is chosen as the flash point. The differences between the industrialized north and the rural south lead to a plethora of issues.

Slavery was the main issue. South Carolina was the first state to secede, and they explicitly listed it as the main reason.

Revisionist history rears its ugly head again.

The agricultural economic engine in the South was driven by slave labor, just as the industrial engine of the North was driven by immigrant labor. There was an inherent "moral" flaw with the South's way of earning their dough, and the North wanted a fully industrial country.

Slavery was a road block to reaching that goal. Slavery implied a perpetual agrarian existence.
