I very much doubt any of those schools can afford to move up to FBS.

FAMU was much better suited for a move-up and look what happened there.

Maybe the troy fans can answer this due to their proximity, but didn't Alabama State have some pretty severe ncaa infractions to overcome just a few years back? I remember they had the cheating Cole brothers (I think they're coaching at TX Southern now) who went there after getting tn state in nashville in trouble with the ncaa.

Yes, the program at Alabama State is shady at best. I just don't see how they would be successful with a move to FBS.

FWIW, a long-time athletic administrator told me years ago that Jackson State was the only SWAC school that could move to (then) I-A because none of the others were apparently even aware the NCAA had a rule book.

Alabama State football is a joke. they came down to Troy a few years back and brought a good crowd. We sent them home with the tails between their legs licking their wounds. These FCS programs talk about moving up all the time, but they aren't prepared most of the time.

Jacksonville State was talking about moving up and joining the Belt too. That is also laughable.

Anytime TROY plays ASU or JSU the place is packed out. After TROY moved up they had a hole in their schedule where Iowa St. pulled out of there contract to play TROY at home. So they got ASU to fill the slot left open.

It's pretty much true. One way many of them skimp on budgets is by having a really small and/or part-time Compliance Office. When I was a GA in Compliance, I dealt with an HBCU whose basketball coach doubled as their Compliance Officer. And he had no idea what he was talking about or what the rules were -- he was basically recruiting one of our players to transfer to his school after the player had announced he was leaving the team, but our coaches had not given him permission to speak to other schools yet.

I agree with you.

I see them realigning within six years. The gubner of Mississippi has already proferred the merging of Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State into Jackson State. Plus I believe the northern MEAC schools will probably fall back to DII leaving SC State, FAMU, NC A&T, NCCU and BCU to make a decision. Savannah State will go DII as well.

Falling your logic

I see the a new HBCU conference as

Alabama State
Alabama A&M
Bethune Cookman
Deleware State
Florida A&M
Grambling
North Carolina A&T
North Carolina Central
Priarie View A&M
South Carolina State
Southern
Texas Southern

East

Bethune Cookman
Deleware State
Florida A&M
North Carolina A&T
North Carolina Central
South Carolina State

West

Alabama State
Alabama A&M
Grambling State
Priarie View A&M
Southern
Texas Southern

This would be a very nice FCS conference.

Don't see it happening...ASU has many troubles not known to those outside of the state of Alabama.

Not true. ASU is definitely known outside of Alabama based on the experience I had traveling with ASU. Secondly, Alabama State has not had any dicussion to move to the FBS but ASU is in a position where they can do so. Moving to the Sun Belt wouldn't be that difficult. The Sun Belt is smallest of FBS conferences and a lot of the schools in this conference are not known unless you stay in these areas. ASU has a 8,000 seat basketball arena and now a new 30,000 seat football stadium on the way. ASU doesn't use old hotels for students. I have no idea where u got that from. Alabama State is a growing institution and with the growth of the University a move to FBS is very possible. Troy did it even though I have no idea seeing there are one of the smallest FBS schools around with only around 7,000 students on there campus.

Seriously, congrats on the new stadium but I still doubt the ability to move up at this time. There is a lot more to the move than simply announcing you are going to do so. Troy was fortunate to make the move before the major changes started taking place...seems to me that it will be more difficult to do in the future.

True, It will be difficult if ASU do in fact decide to move. President Harris as well as other members of the board of trustees want the University to compete at the highest level inside and outside the classrooms. They are positioning the school to do just that with over 150 million dollars of improvements not only in athletics but academics as well. ASU competes at the Division 1A level in all there athletics. A move to FBS in football would only be a small step in the big picture that they have for the University. A lot of people look down on ASU and other schools like us because we are a "Black College". Only different in HBCU's is that they don't get as much funding that other schools like Auburn & Alabama receives. I went to Troy a few years back before transferring to Alabama State. A move to FBS in the immediate future is highly unlikely but if they do in fact explore that option, I'm thinking it will be in the next 5 to 10 years.

Even if you build the stadium, you still have to have a place to go. All of these schools trying to move up now are too late. You have to get approval to start your own conference too.

I'm very happy they passed the rule requiring a team wanting to move up to have a Conference to move in to. prevents FBS from becoming diluted with second-rate programs clogging up the works with Indy status.

You are putting that up like the Sun Belt is a tough conference. You have won all those conference titles but when u play teams like Clemson u get destroyed like u did this year. And then you people down there in Troy really think you can compete in the Big East!? REALLY? Play teams like Alabama on a week to week basis and get your basketball program up then those major conference will look at Troy. No offense to Troy because I was once a student there but I know all about Troy so don't go there like Troy is such a superior program you know that is not true.

I'm not sure if you were joking but this is an absolutely ignorant comment. I went to Alabama A&M before I came to Troy. I can personally inform when I played sports the first athletic teams meeting before school even started was about NCAA compliance. And you constantly had people keeping up with grades, informing you of changes, and making sure you weren't breaking rules.

No offense buddy but I'm assuming you got kicked out of Troy because of bad grades and went to ASU. That is the only reason anyone would ever do something crazy like that. But I went to an HBCU before and I'll say Troy's second team would dominate the SWAC. I've seen team punt from the 20 yard line in that conference before.

Clemson is an undefeated national title contender who has already beat the best two teams in the ACC. Troy hanging within ten points for three quarters is actually admirable given they had more five star recruits than any team in the nation this summer. And we are building our basketball team up........The soon to be fourth largest and best looking facility in the state is 30% complete.

They had no clue what it meant to actually have an FBS team.

Hate to tell y'all this, but State has already built a new baseball stadium with field turf and the stadium is going up, as we speak. Their alumni are supporting the facilities upgrades. Whether or not they get an invite, they'll have some of the best facilities money can buy...
