RE: PAC-10 to invite 6 from Big XII
Ok, I still insist the ultimate goal is 80 (5x16) teams. They chop out the rest of Div IA/FBS, and then move to a playoff. Playoff is each conf has an automatic bid, and that leaves 3 wild card slots open.
Why? Because a playoff means A LOT of money, and then it's only split over 2/3 of the teams currently in FBS, which means even MORE money.
Ideally they have nearly every state covered, so they don't get push back (O. Hatch).
If the TX blogger is right, then my guess is it looks something like:
Big 16: Big 11+ Mizzou, UNL, N. Dame, Syr, and...Louisville (possibly WVU or UConn)
Pac 16: Pac 10 + TX, TTech, Colo, Okla, Ok St, Utah
SEC: SEC+ TAMU, UCG, Fla St, WVU (possibly Clemson, possibly L'ville)
ACC: ACC (-FSU, -UCG) + Big E remains (Cincy, USF, UConn, Pitt, Rutgers)+ ??? (1 slot)
MWC: MWC (-Utah) + ISU, Baylor, Kansas, KSU, and...Memphis. This leaves 2 slots open
So, there are 3 slots still open. 1 in the east, and 2 in the west.
Temple or UCF are your honest favorites in the East. I can see TPTB just leaving that slot open.
In the West, there are 2 slots open. Those too could just remain open, and then there are 77 teams vying for playoffs, and the revenue. But, if you're gonna fill the western slots, then top choices would be Hawaii, Houston, UNLV and Fresno St.
One final choice would be to drop SDSU (dividing revenue over 76 teams is even better) and send Memphis to SEC, WVU to Big 16, and L'ville to ACC. Hard to say if ACC would accept L'ville.
