Come on... lets be honest... the last 6 years of CMU football under Brian Kelly and then under Butch Jones didn't really focus on defense too much.
The focus was on the spread offense and putting up points...
LOTS of points. And getting the players in on offense that could run the spread.
We weren't going to win (or lose) games 10 to 7, which is alright by me. Honestly, I can't remember at any time in my following of CMU football that we had as dynamic of an offense as we've had the past 4 to 6 years. Heck, we had times in the late 90's and early 00's that we couldn't even kick a field goal for chiss sakes!
Our offense was horrendous.
There hasn't been a lot of emphasis on defense with the past 2 coaches, but we've won the MAC Championship 3 times and won 2 bowl games. Its worked out pretty darn good in my opinion.
CMU's defense vastly improved this past year over the previous 2 or 3 years. Kelly knew he was in trouble on defense right before he left for cinci, thats why they signed a gazillion defensive backs that one year. If CMU had been able to put together a great defense the past years would have been even better, no doubt. But, we sure didn't do too bad though either.
And this is coming from a guy who loves defense, but I have to admit, I sure do like watching our offense play.
