2026 Deficit higher than ever.
“Our current massive deficits will be reduced to practically nothing. Our country will be powered by growth. We'll pay off our debt.” Donald Trump, 2024 Campaign

Trump campaigned on reducing the deficit. Then we had DOGE, they were going to slash federal spending. Then we had tariffs, which Trump promised would be Trillions in revenue. So 2026 must have been a great year for cutting the deficit, right?

Nope, higher than any non-covid stimulus year.

“ The federal budget deficit totaled $2.0 trillion in fiscal year 2026, the Congressional Budget Office estimates, $218 billion more than the deficit recorded in fiscal year 2025. Although revenues rose by $169 billion (or 3 percent), outlays rose more—by an estimated $386 billion (or 6 percent).”
https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/2026-10/61985-MBR.pdf

What about the tariffs? We were going to have Trillions in tariff revenue. Tariff revenue is down this year to 195B, but that must just be because the orange one’s tariffs turned out to be illegal and they had to pay them back? Nope, only $130B in refunds. Trillions in tariff revenue was another lie. It didn’t help the deficit, it just made everything more expensive.

It doesn't matter who the President is.

Neither party cares about showing fiscal restraint.

I'm sure those multi-trillion $$$ spending bills have nothing to do with it.

President has nothing to do with the debt. It is all Congress. They hold the purse strings.

the debt is to a size where savings in a given year don't matter. interest is the #2 spending item.
Net interest this year is 1.05 TRILLION.
So even if U cut spending by 1 trillion you have not even made a dent in the problem. We are at least 40 years to late to the table.
DOGE CUT ABOUT 22 BILLION, TARRIFS HAVE BROUGHT IN JUST BELOW 200 BILLION a year last year and this. that doesn't even pay 25% of the interest cost.

When neither party seems to want to cut back on spending and one actually wants us to spend us into oblivion and lead our country to complete collapse so they can institute socialism/Communism, I'm not gonna blame Trump. I'm not gonna blame him for the Iran War when the IRGC has been at war with us since 1979. We just finally chose to fight back. I mean their chanting "Death to America!" first in their "Death to ___!" chanting since the Carter Administration isn't just a vocal exercise. They genuinely believe it.

Our aggression against Iran began decades before.

Why did they want death to America?

How many Iranian deaths did we support before they reacted?

We pushed them, they pushed back, and now we are mad they pushed back.

We went to Iran. They didn’t come to us.

Not true. The debt is $40 trillion annual revenue is about $5.6 trillion. To put that in relatable terms translate it to a typical middle class household.

Say you have a $300,000 mortgage, two car loans that total $60k, $30k in student loans, and $10k in credit card debt you pay a larger percentage of your income in debt service than the federal government if you make $150,000.

The government’s debt service is interest only, so that $1 trillion is only 18% of income. Most people pay over 20% on just their mortgage and the government doesn’t pay taxes and that 20% mortgage payment is based on pre tax income.

So we make plenty to service the debt, we just need to stop taking vacations and getting our nails done every week. Our current revenue is higher, by a trillion dollars, than spending was in 2019. If spending was at 2019 levels we would have a trillion dollar surplus. If we had increased 2019 spending by inflation only we would have a $300B surplus.

My super simple plan to get rid of the deficit in 30 years without raising taxes:

Balanced budget amendment that specifies 25% of tax receipts go to debt service (interest paid first, remainder to reducing bonds issued). That would be about $1.4 trillion for FY 2027. Annual audits of every government department and agency. Push as much as humanly possible back to the states, the way the founders intended. If a state wants super generous Medicaid programs they can pay for them and people can decide where they want to live. Let states set their own Medicare and Medicaid rates and get the feds out of it. Feds maintain control and collection of Social Security.

We may have made mistakes in diplomacy with the Shahs in the past, but we didn't openly try to kill them. The IRGC, on the other hand, has been killing our soldiers through proxies like Hezbollah, al-Qaeda, The Houthis, Muslim Brotherhood, and even the PLO and Hamas since the 1980s. That's not coming from me but from history. And that's not to mention the hostage crisis in '79 when those at the American embassy were taken hostage.

You know, friend, you have a bad habit of taking up for despots like Putin and the Ayatollah. Maybe you should rethink that.

In theory I agree, but politicians who did that would serve one term. The American people want no pain, Obamacare is a perfect example it never worked, was way over cost, and full of fraud yet people screamed over it being cut. same true with medicare and SS. We want our pie and don't want to pay for it. You get elected by feeding the beast.

People resist change, especially change that's good for them in the long run. We've become creatures of habit for a reason, sadly. That's just the way it is.

Seems the current national debt is about $40.27 trillion. There are about 349.5 million Americans. That is about $115,221 per person.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

If the figure is correct ... we're doomed.

Its really not going to be a problem until certain shadowy people at the very top (globally) decide they want the entire worlds economy to collapse in order to bring in a New World Order and one world leader.

Until then the rest of the world will want to keep us afloat in our debt.

You are definitely not wrong.

https://www.csnbbs.com/thread-1033785.html

I posted nearly this exact thing just a few days ago as a matter of fact.

Many responses were to either say “but the other side does it too” or to stick their heads in the sand and pretend the debt isn’t real because “we owe it to ourselves” lol.

We are already completely doomed and people want to portray it as unpatriotic to own up to our stupidity.

Bad citizens create and deserve bad government.

Gets worse. Counting it per person is kind of useless since many do not pay taxes.

The debt is $361,000 per taxpayer currently. https://www.usdebtclock.org/

The interest on debt payments have been climbing disturbingly fast. No one cares and debt hawks in congress have dropped like flies recently.

It will come due. And ALMOST every politician will share the blame. The way the government and people will choose to get rid of it will probably be through heavy inflation. 8% inflation for a few years cuts it without having to do the tough cuts in spending. Not the way I would prefer, but I don't see anyone actually cutting spending.
