I got it for 3.07 a gallon the other day, but that was for E15 and that's still not how averages work. Before the war I could get E15 around here for like 2.30ish a gallon.

What could you get gas for before the war started at that gas station? That's the important question not playing around with antidotal evidence to go against the averages.

the low-mid twos here in the 'burg ... currently in the low threes now...

it won't take long for it get back to pre-war prices in the 'sip ... who knows in the blue states...

you're gonna lose that bet unless they stir up the sand again - which is possible...

Go on the record then, how long do you think it's going to take for gas prices to get back in your state to the pre-war level?

best guess would be a week or so after the sesquicentennial...

So essentially 1 month from now? I'm rooting for you to be right, but I'm fairly certain that's not possible.

BJs, we already have a bet going. You gave me twice as many days as the war lasted for the average price in America of $2.98/gal the day of the first strikes. I got gas the Monday morning after the first strikes at $2.46/gal right around the corner from my office. I am on record for that. Currently, that station is at $3.32/gal. But we have been told the "oil executives" telling us oil will be up to $150/bbl in July due to "inventory". That was propaganda by people that make more money when oil prices increase. WTI ended Feb 27th trading at $67.02/bbl. Right now it is trading at $76.45/bbl. That's just under $10/bbl difference. July 4th is a good point to see "how long" it takes for gas prices to decrease.

That certainly could just be propaganda, it could also be true. We've been pushing out every single source of available oil onto the market to try to keep prices down as much as possible, as we should be. There is a limit and those built up inventories do eventually run out. What we also don't know is how long it's going to take to get all of the mines out of the strait, get shipping back up to pre-war levels, and how much damage has actually been done to oil wells and refineries in the region. That last portion could really impact how long these prices stay elevated.

Gas prices vs oil prices are a steel and feather comparison. While the price of oil may drop like steel, gas will float down like a feather.

Just over 20million bbls of oil passes through the Strait. We found out last week that for the past month or so just over 10million bbls were making it through with the our help. That 20 million bbls makes up approximately 25% of the maritime oil in the world. The Gulf countries started coming up with ways of moving oil by other means on day 1. The Strait of Hormuz will mostly only be used for local transport within the next 5 years. And you can bet your bottom dollar, the oil traders have the same information those "oil executives" have/had when they made those statements. US oil companies have over 40 BILLION bbls of oil in reserve. That means they know where it is and just need to pump it out. They aren't running out in our lifetimes.

I don't think it's a profit deal. Most of the gas in the tanks was purchased by providers (stations) weeks ago and they're trying to break even. Gas stations make very little off gas.. They make money off instore items.

Prices are based on competition. There's a reason when one station drops/raises their prices the other stations around them change their prices too, and they aren't getting their gas from the same place or at the same time.

They should report average price excluding state and local tax and the number would be under $3.50 today.

You really don't know what an average is, do you? 01-wingedeagle

Hmm let's see.....

Example 1:
Price 1 = $3.75
Price 2 = $4.25

The average is $4.00

Example 2
Price 1 = $3.75
Price 2 = $5.25

The average is $4.50

So what can we glean from this math problem? Hmmmmm?

Thinking....
Thinking....
Thinking....

The calculation of the average of two numbers INCREASES when the higher number gets even higher. Good gosh I wonder if this applies when getting an average of MORE than two numbers????

What can I test this theory on... Hmmmm? WAIT - I KNOW - let's try it with Gas Prices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets go to AAA state average gas prices and see what it tells us? Well here is some interesting info...

- The nation AVERAGE of the 50 states (and DC) is $4.09 so that is the average of 51 numbers.

- The top 4 (highest state averages) are California $5.71, Hawaii $5.58, Washington $5.49, Alaska, $5.09

I am still a little cloudy here on the average thing. BUT, I did a little experiment.... I lowered the prices of each of these 4 most expensive to $5.00 each...

Do you know what happened???? The average of those 51 numbers ACTAULLY DROPPED to $4.05!

My mind is surely blown here.... is it like Banker actually DOES understand how averages work? I mean this is embarrassing to my Masters degree in economics and statistics.

Epic Mind Blown

Now, use that big brain and define "artificial" for me. 07-coffee3

Artificial is meant to refer to the intentional implementation of taxes or policies that have caused gas prices in specific jurisdictions to be significantly higher than in other jurisdictions. It is artificial because it is not tied to the cost of the underlying commodity, but is then used to calculate the “average” price of that commodity.

Over the past 12’months, regulatory laws in CA have led to the closure of 3 oil refineries, two Phillips 66 and 1 Valero, that have reduced west coast refining capacity by 17%. These refineries served 7 states in the west, which just happen to now be well above the “national average”

I was being kind by saying artificial when the more correct term would have been “intentional”.

Per AAA, gas was $4.62 on average in California on February 26, 2025.

It was $4.63 on average on February 26, 2026. 07-coffee3

Actually, the bet you and I have doesn't expire until Mid January of next year. But, you are right. We will find out pretty soon.

It was $4.63 on average on February 26, 2026. 07-coffee3

What does February 26th have to do today where CA gas is $5.71? The last of those 3 refineries, and the biggest, just closed in late January 2026, another closed in November 2025, so now they are feeling it.

Texas gas prices are up $0.80 a gallon from February 2025. CA is up $1.08. That means they have seen a 35% higher rate of increase.

Sometimes it’s better to just not post than to try and be clever when you obviously aren’t.

California raised gas taxes between those two dates.

Gas is just over $3 here in Louisville. It’s $2.87 in Southern Indiana.
