End of CNN as We Know It
Quote:The context here is worth sitting with. Consider what has happened in the last two years. Elon Musk took over X and turned it into a political instrument. Zuckerberg folded and killed fact-checking on Facebook and Instagram. Larry Ellison was part of the consortium that acquired TikTok. His son David took control of Paramount, which owns CBS. That is the information infrastructure of the country changing hands in real time. X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, CBS. And now they are circling CNN.

RE: End of CNN as We Know It
Quote:Paramount Skydance and Netflix have been in a bidding war for Warner Bros. Discovery and now Netflix has lost that war, saying that the latest offer made by their rival was a "superior proposal." Paramount, headed by David Ellison, will acquire the entire company whereas Netflix was only seeking streaming, HBO, and their film studio.

"The transaction we negotiated would have created shareholder value with a clear path to regulatory approval. However, we've always been disciplined, and at the price required to match Paramount Skydance's latest offer, the deal is no longer financially attractive, so we are declining to match the Paramount Skydance bid," said Netflix CEO Greg Peters in a statement.

"Warner Bros. is a world-class organization, and we want to thank David Zaslav, Gunnar Wiedenfels, Bruce Campbell, Brad Singer and the WBD Board for running a fair and rigorous process. We believe we would have been strong stewards of Warner Bros.' iconic brands, and that our deal would have strengthened the entertainment industry and preserved and created more production jobs in the U.S. But this transaction was always a 'nice to have' at the right price, not a 'must have' at any price," the statement continued.

"Netflix's business is healthy, strong and growing organically, powered by our slate and best-in-class streaming service. This year, we'll invest approximately $20 billion in quality films and series and will expand our entertainment offering. Consistent with our capital allocation policy, we'll also resume our share repurchase program.

"We will continue to do what we've done for more than 20 years as a public company: delight our members, profitably grow our business, and drive long-term shareholder value," Peters concluded.

Warner Brothers didn’t want Netflix to walk away. They are being forced to take the Paramount offer because it’s for more money.

It will likely become CBSN and the CNN staff will almost all be released and CBS News personnel used.

I don't like all this media consolidation. We already have enough problems getting honest news, this just makes it harder.

it's worst-case scenario ... Gannett proved that with print a couple of decades ago ... also to wit, folks are spot-on when they state, "Elon Musk buying twitter was the most important purchase in the history of 1A."

WRH knew all this in the way back...

this is where congress and failure to utilize anti-trust have 'dropped the ball' on Johnny Q. Public more than any other...

CBS didn't have a cable news channel. That piece of the consolidation makes sense.

Yep...our politicians have our best interests at heart...

And you guys were not taking the ideas around Late Stage Capitalism seriously. The proponents are loons. HOWEVER, a decent part of the concerns were valid - more so than we'd like to admit.

bruv, nuts still remembers that thread ... and Ja!, I'm still in agreement with the overall premise and how it will negatively impact the masses moving forward...

No I mourn the fact that we continue to allow our news media be controlled by a few extremely large corporations whom don't have the best interests for average Americans at heart. This just makes 1 fewer huge corporation that has control of the message.
