Scalise will now take his candidacy to the House floor, where he will be up against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who Democrats nominated for Speaker on Tuesday night.

The floor fight could get messy. Candidates need the support of a majority of the chamber to take control of the gavel and Republicans hold a razor-thin majority. McCarthy required 15 rounds of voting to secure the gavel.

Reps. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Bob Good (R-Va.), two of the eight who voted to oust McCarthy, didn’t say Wednesday if they’d support Scalise. Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio), said he would not switch his vote away from Jordan.

More Work To Do

Zero chance atm. There's over 30 republicans saying they will not vote for Scalise. They can only have 4 not vote for him and win. Maybe a few more if they just vote present or don't vote rather than vote against.

It's a shame Jordan didn't get it. But, we already knew he wouldn't ahead of time. At least most of us did.

Jordan is supposedly going to throw his support to Scalise. Scalise will likely have to make some promises to get the over the top. I suggest he not make any he has no intention of keeping. Frankly, while I'd prefer Jordan----I think either is better option than McCarthy.

Scalise is McCarthy Lite with cancer.

The corporate tax cuts will likely expire, but individual rates will be left alone.

Assuming that Biden will still be POTUS in 2025 and the economy hasn’t boomed by then.

Well, what I said all along would happen... is happening.

After a bunch of votes the republicans will have to start bending the knee to Hakeem Jeffries to have him bless a limp wristed al caps RINO nominee that enough dems will support.

The stupid party.

Snow Job Gaetz and the Seven Dummies have the brains of a crackhead.

lol---you realize many---if not most---of the ones saying they wont vote of Scalise are Taylor-Greene/Boebert/Massie types. They are NOT going to vote for Jeffries. They ARE going to leverage their votes for basically the same kind of promises McCarthy was forced to give them in January. I suggest Scalise do what McCarthy failed to do---live up to those very reasonable and simple promises. After seeing McCarthy's fate---I think he will live up to any election promises he makes.

The reason the Democrats are so much better at holding their votes together is they dont screw their various coalitions. For some reason, the RINO's think its a good idea to screw over a MAGA coalition that makes up at least HALF of their votes. Ive never seen a more self destructive group than the GOP---but its got to end. The GOP MUST stop ignoring its base and screwing over it various coalitions. It has to support all of its various interest groups that make up the various GOP coalitions. That means simple things like MAGA congressmen need to be more supportive of the RINO national security positions and the RINO's must be MUCH more supportive of a MAGA base that supplies the Party with the majority of its votes. Its not rocket science.

The corporate cuts in the TCJA are permanent. They don't expire. It would take another bill to change them or remove them.

Gotcha.

I could even see some populist Rs making a deal in Congress to include corporate tax hikes for other concessions such as spending.

I think raising individual rates after multi year inflation + likely future recession would be a political loser.

Agreed. It's likely most all of the individual cuts would become part of another bill or an extension, but it's not guaranteed. At least not for all. The Dems would likely support an increase in the top rate(s).

Help me Obi-Wan-McCarthy. Your my only hope.

Thats about where you seem to be right now and, yes---I think your overreacting.

Im suggesting we stop screwing over any of our various coalitions---especially one that supplies us with half our votes (based on the Primary numbers). I wouldnt even think that would be controversial. Its going to be fine. Scalise will make a few promises---get elected---and I think he will keep those promises. A month from now there will be a whole new set of reasons why the "Republicans cant win". Personally, I think this election will be far more about "anyone but Biden" than it will be about the identity of the Speaker of the House (which I suspect most people cant even name). Maybe Im not understanding your point---but I feel like there is little chance this is something the 2024 election will hinge on.

Suck it up, buttercup. 13 months from another L if we keep up like this.

If Trump wins the nomination comfortably do you think that leaders like McConnell/Ryan/Romney & the RNC will fully endorse Trump and try to unite the party?

we just took an "L" less than a year ago because the establishment are sh*tturds. We will continue to take "L"'s as long as they are running things.

Establishment leaders: "Give us the majority so we can get control of the democrats spending!"

*gets majority*

Establishment leaders 8 weeks from budget deadline: "We're going on a 6 week recess"

Establishment leaders when they get back: "We dont have time to have budget meetings, so lets do this CR like we promised we wouldnt do. It doesnt have Ukraine funding in it, but we've cut a secret deal with Biden* to pass it separately and keep it going. Then we'll just do a massive $8trillion omnibus bill a little later.

So taking another L...one that will end up worse than the earlier L is better?

Do you even hear how stupid this sounds? Did you think you'd get an improvement over McCarthy? He was a concession pick. Now we will get a concession pick worse than the concession pick that 8 idiots sided with all democrats to remove.

The DNC talking points for congressional races just write themselves.

Stupid party.

Exactly this.

Those broken promises and flat out lies led to the populist takeover of the party. Now the energy is in the Trump wing, but to embrace that new ideology would be to admit their own failures like Obamacare, federal spending, empowering the left, and most importantly: letting the media attack their voter base and not defend them.

Nobody cares about the Speaker of the House stuff, much less will care about it this time next week. There will be so many other things that will happen that will actually affect the citizens of the US prior to the election over a year from now. You are being WAY too dramatic about it. The US government funded the war taking place in the ME, and it wasn't for the side our government SAYS it is on.

THIS IS WHY REPUBLICANS CANT WIN. THE SOLUTION IS TO CUT THIS SH*T OFF.

4 spending bills passed the house in smaller packages that weren't funding the entire government just parts of it. Which is one of the big promises that was made, to not pass gigantic total fund spending bills, but to break it down into smaller packages.

Every single one of those spending bills cut spending by over 100 billion from what was going to be spent.

Every single one of those bills was not taken up by Senate because dems control the Senate.

But, people are too busy blaming republicans when it was the dems in the Senate who didn't take up those bills and pass them. Why blame dems when we can fight our own party? Either that are some people just don't know how our government works and haven't figured out the Senate is required to pass those bills too or they still haven't figured out republicans didn't win the Senate.
