Jake Crews just entered the transfer portal. Was a very late signing (Nov. '21 for a 2022 grad). Appeared for one inning this season, and got shelled by Charlotte, giving up 5 runs on 5 hits (2 were home runs). Hope he excels wherever he ends up.

Ben Rosengard has been in the portal for awhile, but that's it so far for Rice. UH and the Aggies have multiple players already in....and I believe transfers can start committing this coming week.

We need more, not less, players in the portal.
I hate to say it, but there was a fundamental lack of talent on the team this year and we would do well to have some churn.
Of course, players should also have the opportunity to stay at the university to finish their education even if no longer on the baseball team.

Agree, but hard to do unless the scholarship money is transferred to equal financial aid dollars.

Funny how quickly we've turned from "We're Rice, we do it the right way and honor scholarships for 4 years..." to "We need more, not less, players in the portal...Agreed". Gotta love college sports fans. :D

We can honor the scholarship and still not have them on the team… You can put a player on a “medical” scholarship-they maintain aid and we can use the scholarship on a better player. Bailiff and Bloomgren did/do all the time in football, Rhoades did it in hoops, etc..

I'm not arguing that it can't be done. I'm just entertained at how quickly the tone has changed.

Don’t see these 2 positions as one or the other. Both can be true at the same time.

Wow, over half (20+ players) of Wichita State’s baseball team has gone into the portal!

Some really elite players in there and more added each day, yet most are in their for the best NIL deal possible, and upperclassmen are in there for leverage against the draft. We still have only Rosengard and Crews in the portal.

They are getting a new coach, so I guess some of their players didn't want to stick around to see how that plays out. Once a meaningful group (particularly if they are key starters) leaves, then it makes sense many more would follow.

So much for our good fortune streak-- Connor Walsh entered the portal yesterday as a grad transfer. I hear he still could return to Rice, but testing the waters.

Not sure I believe he will return to Rice. Hope I'm wrong.
Many who enter the portal never emerge from it (at least according to the latest numbers). The transfer portal (with no 1 yr sit out) for no reason, is IMO, the worst thing to happen to college sports EVER!!! Not saying transfers should not be an option, just that there should be viable reasons to transfer without 1 yr penalty (ex: Coach cuts player, Coach leaves or is fired, verifiable personal reason (sick parent, financial issues etc.)). Leaving because the coach "lied to you" during recruiting, or the "coach hates me", or "coach was mean to me", or "coach makes me work out at 6:00 am", or "classes are really hard here", or "I have to do the team laundry", or "I was the best player on my HS team and I thought I would be the best player on college team", or "there aren't enough pretty girls here like there were on my recruiting trip, or....you get my point. I HATE THE TRANSER PORTAL!!!

RE: [split] Baseball Recruiting 2021 and beyond
The transfer portal floodgates have opened-- as I had feared given how he was inexplicably benched the final month of the season, Smiggy has entered the portal, along with Cienfuegos and Brogdon (both grad transfers), joining Walsh (grad transfer) and Rosengard.
Can't blame any of the graduates, but Smiggy would be a HUGE loss, IMO.

OT, watched Pearland run rule a 40 win Westlake team last night Pearland's sophomore pitcher, Nico Partida, was outstanding. 89-91 FB, 74 change up. ASU commit.
Interesting contrast in team style and make up. Pearland just took apart Westlake pitching.

Our new conference mate, Wichita State, has 31 players in the transfer portal, including their Sophomore all-american, two-way player.
