Tom Lee Park Monument, 30-foot granite obelisk, Memphis TN - Circa 1952

The obelisk at Tom Lee Park was constructed to honor "a worthy negro", Tom Lee (1885-1952), who single-handedly rescued 32 survivors of a sinking steamboat, the "M.E. Norman", in 1925 using only his 17 foot fishing boat. This monument was destroyed during a storm in June 2017.

January 16, 1952 — U.S. Bureau of Public Roads at Washington is expected to reply soon on the long pending-recommendation of the Tennessee Highway Department that Airways Boulevard be declared a Federal highway project and thus become eligible for 50 percent Federal matching funds for widening and improvement, the rest to be contributed by state and local agencies. Major item would be construction of a new bridge — estimated to cost $1,500,000 — to replace the present narrow and dangerous structure spanning the Frisco Railroad's Yale Yards. The entire project would link Airways and Lamar with Highway 51, near Whitehaven, via Airways Boulevard and Winchester Road. Memphis General Depot (Army) at south end of bridge has threatened to cancel proposed $10,000,000 expansion unless the bridge bottleneck is removed. Architects are still working on warehouse plans, subject to decision later.

The Japanese Garden at Overton Park was installed in the early 1900s by Robert Galloway, Memphis Park Commissioner. It was demolished in 1941 due to anti-Japanese sentiment after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Enjoyed going to dances downtown back then where George was the mc and the whbquties would show up sometimes. Everyone dressed in mod clothes (early beatles) for the guys.

Hey Cletus, after seeing your photos of the Wolf River recently I was wondering if you have any pics of the Wolf River in the Raleigh area? I have heard that people used to swim and party at a beach on that portion of the Wolf, back before water pollution became a problem.
