NIL in a nutshell.
A few months old, but an interesting read for anyone who hasn't run into it. With all the chatter going on about NIL, this article is very informative, even if it might be redundant to some.
‘There’s no rules. It’s crazy’: New money in NCAA recruiting leaves elite athletes ripe for exploitation
Snippets for those who don't want to read it:
Quote:NBC News has reviewed a dozen written offers to high schoolers that experts have described as exploitative, including marketing contracts claiming exorbitant commissions of up to 40% and booster contracts with complex fee structures and legal jargon, reducing the athletes’ freedom to transfer or enter outside deals. One “contract” was just a $100,000 loan.
Quote:An athletic department administrator at a school in the Southeastern Conference, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “Once the NCAA lost in court, they basically pulled out of Afghanistan. There’s no rules. It’s crazy.”
Quote:The one NCAA guardrail is that schools cannot directly offer deals to recruit players. But boosters can pay prospective students through NIL deals, as long as the money is not contingent on enrollment or athletic performance. Some “companies” offering deals are just legal shells around pools of booster money.
Quote:A University of Miami booster has earmarked $10 million to sign players to NIL deals through his companies. A University of Texas offensive lineman can get $50,000 for charity work, offered by donors who saw holes in the roster. A University of Tennessee booster collective reportedly bought NIL rights to the team’s future quarterback for $8 million.
Quote:Doug Fillis, whose company, Accelerate Sports Ventures, helps manage NIL within college athletic departments, said: “Boosters are looking around and saying, ‘You told me I couldn’t give an athlete a bagel and cream cheese, and now I can give a million dollars? I’ll do 4 [million].”
Quote:“Now, all the shady characters can come out of hiding,” said Andy Bark, who over the past few decades founded many of the top college recruiting events for high school athletes. He described middlemen and boosters who moved money through cars, prepaid debit cards, church baskets, even Starbucks cups stuffed with cash.
Quote:“The most misunderstood part is that this is not a new market. It’s just not a dirty little secret anymore.”
Quote:Agents are basically connecting themselves to high school prospects and their families, then going around to schools saying, 'Hey, school X is offering my guy this much money in NIL deals,'” said an athletic department administrator in a Power Five conference.

RE: NIL in a nutshell.
Its ridiculous. The answer, of course, is fairness. A national stipend for college athletes regardless of school attended or their individual talents, funded by a percentage of TV monies. A flat fee regardless of how much or how little a school's tuition happens to be. Schools would be chosen by the athlete because of that school's and team's merits and the athletes personal preference.
But, we all know, that has never happened and never will. I say we need to buy a basketball team and get a championship before all hell breaks loose and freezes over and breaks loose again.

You mean like in the 80's when Dana Kirk was coaching? Please. This is nothing new and has been going on for as long as I can personally remember. I'm sure what we did pales in comparison to what was going on at the bigger schools, but you don't have to take my word for it.
KEITH LEE TESTIFIES OF PAYMENTS FROM KIRK
Quote:Former Memphis State basketball coach Dana Kirk gave star forward Keith Lee $1,200, payments of up to $600 a month, a television, a stereo and a car for playing at Memphis State, Lee testified yesterday at Kirk's tax evasion trial in Memphis.

Keith got the shaft. He would be driving a Lexus or Infiniy today. Back then all he got was a used 1976 Plymouth Duster

Thanks for posting this.
The NIL rules really don't change much...pretty much just legalizes the shenanigans that've been going on for many decades to allow boosters to give more money.

Is Ira Lichterman still alive ? He was the bag man back then. Maybe Griffin can get ahold of him

According to these articles, it's $8 million dollars for Nico Iamaleava. So that's three published sources (out of many) stating as much, one of which is NBC News.

RE: NIL in a nutshell.
Universities should now only offer 1 year scholarships and base their renewal on performance. If we’ve transitioned to a “pro” sports model, schools should no longer be on the hook for a 4 year scholarship if someone doesn’t perform up to expectations. It would then be strictly business for both sides, with no loyalty to either a particular school or athlete.
