The feeder programs from european clubs are scouting kids from 7 years old and from then on, they play better competition. Whereas in the states, a talented 17 year old is getting a scholarship to play in college against other college level players. It's starting to change for the US but until most of our team is compiled of starting players from the EPL, La Liga, etc we are going to struggle to be a top team

If Chris Richards wasn't hurt, our starters would be entirely European based.

RE: OT: World Cup
Here is a little perspective:
MLS averages about 285,000 viewers per game.
Ohio vs Ball St got 250,000

So take the Ohio fanbase + the Ball St fanbase and you can probably throw our fanbase in there as well and you get the combined interest of a MLS game.
Compare that to Ohio St @ Maryland last weekend which pulled in 6.6 million viewers.

Basically what we have is our best athletes are still playing football, basketball, and baseball with the leftovers playing soccer. Yes, I know that's a little over simplified but basically true.

Have you guys noticed this? I was shocked to turn on the end of a game this week and see nine minutes of stoppage time. Apparently that’s low?

A bit off topic but I think the rocket-speed “growth” of MLS in the recent past was another byproduct of keeping interest rates too low, too long. Same story as the billion dollar ”growth” of NFT market, startup companies that produce more PowerPoint slides than revenue (SPACs).

MLS has a lot of brand new stadiums financed in a near zero interest rate environment. They also built in a lot of new markets where they don’t have a historic base of fan support. As the US sits at the brink of recession MLS teams might find themselves in a really tight spot soon.

College soccer might end up being more resilient than MLS at promoting soccer in the US. Food for thought.

Iran pulls off a huge upset against Wales. Gives us a lot more wiggle room.

Things NOW get interesting... just saw that Wales was down 1 man though. So they made their own bed.

Injuries added x....

Right? Per half!

Add in the short turnarounds between the cup and league play…I see some tired and injured footballers in the future.

Massive upset? Wales is ranked #19 and Iran is ranked #20.

Not that I think the team will, but it's a reminder that we better not take the Iran match for granted.

at the 64:00, somebody needs to explain how there isn't a forward on the far post as the corner sails over 'em all...

Getting that point didn't mean a whole lot. We have to beat Iran Tuesday. Same would have been true if we lost tonight. Still, a good performance by the US.

I know. Pulisic was placing those corners really well, but nobody in blue got a head on them.

We played well but I was really unimpressed with England. Their roster doesn’t excite me. Seems like Harry Kane and a lot of meh.

I buried two solos in the top corner in HS ... I always had a floater playing deep ... just un-fk'n-believable ... they we're tired in the end and we played not-to-lose ... that's the game I watched...

fwiw, DaSaintFan is spot-on with StL youth soccer ... b/c we moved from StL to the 'burg in '74 is why the HYSA exists as it does today ... ball on the foot blew their dayum minds back then ... 03-wink 04-cheers
