Alabama or Ohio St-who’s number 5?
Top 3 are easy (3 undefeateds), I think number 4 is too (USC). Who’s on deck if TCU or USC slips up next week? A 2 loss Alabama or an Ohio St that just got blown out at home.

Ohio St. Their wins over Penn St and Notre Dame carry more weight than Alabama’s wins over Texas and Ole Miss. Alabama has 1 more loss, so they needed definitively better top wins to overcome it.

USC.

Ohio St. is #4.

Not sure Tennessee doesn't slip into #6 ahead of Alabama with Clemson, LSU and Oregon falling.

Good point. The S. Carolina loss doesn't look nearly as bad with the Gamecocks beating #8 Clemson today. S. Carolina likely will be ranked on Tuesday as well.

RE: Alabama or Ohio St-who’s number 5?
I think I'd rank Ohio St over USC, but they'll be close, and if USC wins their Conference title game then then they'll be considered of similar power, then the conference tiebreaker will put them over the top. Tennessee should certainly be ahead of bama, they beat bama and LSU and lost to 2 solid teams. Bama moves up to 7, then probably PSU and LSU at 8 and 9. So:

1. Georgia
2. Michigan
3. TCU
4. tOSU
5. USC
6. Tennessee
7. Alabama
8. Penn St
9. LSU

OSU will be behind USC no matter what. They'll probably be 5 but I wouldn't count out Bama. The rankings can't change after next week unless both TCU and USC lose. I'd expect both OSU and Bama to jump in that case.

The top 4 are these.
1.Michigan
2.Georgia
3.TCU
4.Ohio State
5.USC
6.Alabama

USC's win was not that great. Ohio State's only lost was to Michigan. Alabama two loses where to LSU and Tennessee. LSU lost to Texas A&M which gave them a 3rd lost.

So who says the system needs fixing? It will happen for the money, and probably should, but not because it doesn't produce good theater.

Ohio State will still be top 4. USC is number 5. USC lost to a Utah which was not a top 10 team, and OSU lost to number 3 Michigan.

1) Georgia
2) Michigan
3) TCU
4) Ohio State
5) USC
6) Alabama

USC could be 4 or 5 or 6, but controls its destiny for the CFP. The seeding between Alabama and Ohio State is important in determining the chances of backing into the playoffs. A loss by USC in the CCG, or a bad loss by TCU or Michigan, opens up a slot.

I expect this. The committee knows USC has another game to change their mind. If USC is sloppy next week the committee will keep OSU #4.

I can’t fathom a way Alabama passes Ohio State. No 2-loss team is making the playoff… this year.

Current ranking:

Tied for No. 1: Georgia and Michigan
3. TCU
4. Southern Cal
5. Ohio State
6. Tennessee (though it pains me to say it as a Vanderbilt fan — Tennessee looked tremendous in its route of VU)

My top 6:

1) Georgia
2) Michigan (very close, could be #1)
3) TCU
4) USC
5) Alabama
6) Ohio State

You guys who say "Ohio State lost one game, Alabama two" are IMO being too clinical about it. You're missing how badly Ohio State got rolled over and how bad IMO that looked in front of probably 15 million viewers.

Ohio State just doesn't pass the smell test. They got trucked, flattened, at home. Alabama lost two games at the buzzer on the road.

Ohio State got *exposed*. Nobody has exposed Alabama.

But both IMO will need help. If TCU and USC win their CCGs, neither is making the playoffs.

We'll see.

I think you and I are the only posters here that see this the same way... a home blowout loss is baaaaadddd vs two tight road losses. I think OSU has enough there to stay ahead, but it's a coin flip. I wonder how the ESPN bias will factor into influencing the committee. They can definitely tolerate two SEC teams in. Two B1G teams is a much harder sell. Especially OSU in the Peach Bowl. They'd be steam rolled.

I think the committee could go that way, or they could go the opposite way. They could place USC #4 this week, to assert the principle that conference championships matter (even if they aren't the be all and end all). Then, if USC stumbles they can go to Alabama or Ohio State with less criticism.
