National Garage, northeast corner Front St. & Court Ave., Memphis TN - Circa 1935

The National Garage was part of a public parking garage national chain. This building opened in 1927, was eight stories tall, steam-heated, and included a Shell gas station when this photograph was taken. Around 1962, the building became All-Right Parking until the early 1980s when it was demolished.

It looks like the Sun setting in the West. I'm looking at the light coming in between the building and crossing the street in 5 or 6 places. This is looking east, down Madison, what am I missing here.

That building was so 'state of the art' when it opened. Love seeing old Nat Buring Field. They used to have a rickety 4 ft high picket fence in the outfield.

Preston Watts on the left played Football as well as Basketball.
Preston Watts came to Memphis from Nashville in the early 1940s, and was well on his way to a record-setting career when World War II erupted. Watts, who received Little All-America honors in 1941 and 1942, served as the Tigers’ team captain in 1942. “Kill-O” Watts, as he was known by his teammates, set several U of M punting records, which still stood upon his Hall of Fame induction in 1984. His 52-yard punting average over nine attempts against Union University is the best single game average in Tiger history. Watts has the fourth longest kickoff return in Tiger history thanks to his 93-yard return against Troy in 1940. His 90-yard interception return against Middle Tennessee also ranks fourth in Tiger history. Watts scored over 100 points in his career at Memphis. Following service with the Marine Corps in World War II, Watts became an official in the SEC and worked for 20 years. He was the first Memphis athlete to become a Southeast Conference game official and is a past president of the SEC Officials Association. Watts officiated every major bowl game with the exception of the Rose Bowl. He was a member of the Board of Greater Memphis State and was on the committee for the construction of the Liberty Bowl. He worked in the insurance business for over 30 years.

I went to Kingsbury HS & back in the day we'd go over there on Sunday afternoons & jump the brick fence & play tackle FB (stupidly without any pads of course).

The brick fence was not that tall & was topped with a large tile much like a roof tile.
The attached photo show a much taller iron fence to keep out teenagers like us. lol

It was over on Townes Ave. & as Townes ran east it curved & turned into Bayliss Ave. which was in the Kingsbury neighborhood.

There was a grass area where there weren't any gravestones.

It was thick & immaculately groomed; so when you were tackled it was like falling into a thick plush carpet.

My grade school football coach worked at Calvary Cemetery. There was a grade school at the time that the school property backed up to the cemetery. We would go to the cemetery to scrimmage that team.
