Look at "Do the Right Thing" which was from 1989. There was all sorts of talk about who was "really black" in that movie. And that was much more popular than the movies that you reference. I mean... Chuck D rapped over the opening credits "Radio stations I question your blackness, you call yourself black but we'll see if you play this."!

IMO, That was more about attitude and culture than about 'pure blood'.... that was the beginning of it... and it is 'more' now.... again... my opinion and observation... and I doubt your experience will change what I see...

Did you see the "Not Black Enough" movie that you referenced? Was it mainly referring to diluted DNA or not "acting black enough"?

My experience is different than yours in that I see less of "this guy isn't really black" than I saw back in the day.

Quote:The movies talk about it on the two levels... one is 'attitude' meaning (said simply) how you dress or speak or what music you listen to... which is what i think you're referring to... and the other is about 'not mixing races'.

In the best example, a radio station can't be a race.

Yes... but it seems clear that in this instance Chuck D is calling out the owners and DJs (who do have a race) at the black radio stations.

Which one? I'm trying not to read too much in to this question and missing the response I gave that answered the question that you quote below...

So this is both

That's not at all what I said. What I said is that I see more of the 'keep the race pure' (paraphrasing) than I did back in the day. The comments you speak of (outside of my joke about Biden) aren't really pertinent.

For their 'attitude' as I mentioned earlier and not their 'racial purity'. Like Biden, he's suggesting that you're not black if you don't like my music... which is entirely different from saying... you're not black if your great grandfather was white.

I'm trying not to speak for these groups as I do not know them well... but to be obious, I'll paraphrase (because I'm not going to search for it) a TikTok I saw... A black college girl was asked if she preferred black or white men... to which she responded that she didn't like it when black men dated white women as it diluted their culture... and she only wanted to date dark skinned pure black men. That is certainly her right to have a preference, but it DID make me wonder what the reaction would be had that been a white person saying it. I know plenty of Jewish and Asian moms who would STRONGLY prefer that their kids date within their race/culture... and that's been the case for a long time... but I don't really recall (and yes, maybe it was just my experience/those I was around) a lot of black people suggesting that they wanted to only date within the black race. La Raza (Hispanics) may be similar, IDK, so I won't speak to that.

Either way, as I said... the 'growing trend' which you seem to be focused on isn't at all important to what I'm discussing. I'm discussing more the idea that had a white person said it, it would be racist... so why can a black person do so and it isn't? That seems highly related to the discussion we're having here on having seperate meetings for different races.... OUT OF SAFETY CONCERNS (as stated in the article).

Oh, I think what you describe IS racist and I also don't think this is something that is a growing phenomenon. I literally haven't caught any wind of this any more than I did decades ago. Most of the issue I have heard from black women about "their men" dating white women was more of taking "good black men" off the market rather than preserving racial purity but that's just my personal experience.

Perhaps this is just explained by your current exposure to the inner thoughts of young black women (via social media) that you potentially did not have access to (I'm guessing here, I could be wrong!) 20-30 years ago?

My experience on both sides of the border is that Hispanics dating/marrying Anglos is no big deal to anybody. Lots of Anglo/Hispanic pairings within my family and I am myself the result of an Anglo/Hispanic marriage - two if you count both my father and grandmother. Several of my cousins have married Anglos. Don't know about Hispanics dating/marrying blacks/asians - never saw one.

Maybe it is different in places with a larger black and/or Asian population, like NYC or LA - but my experience on the Texas/New Mexico/Arizona borders with Mexico and with Mexicans within Mexico is that it is a nonfactor between "whites" and "hispanics". Dating outside one's religion would be more important.

Maybe Tanq could speak to this based on his El Paso background.

To OO

By La Raza I didn't mean hispanics in general. I'll defer to people in even more Hispanic areas like you and Tanq, but I agree that those lines, especially in Texas have been blurred for 2 centuries or more.

La Raza as I understand it (and I haven't heard much about it recently and only a little bit before) was more about pure Hispanic culture... The race being Hispanic, not white (as you know, plenty of Hispanics in the world, especially not from Mexico identify 'more' as black than white).... Hence my inclusion of them as a possibility... but I don't know enough about them. I don't know that La Raza was ever particularly popular in Mexico/Texas

Perhaps that explains my impression, but I'm not the only one that now has exposure to these inner thoughts.

It's the same reason why people think that white supremacy is rising. the numbers don't say that, but the ability for them to communicate and coordinate and find people 'who think like them' to foster their feelings is greater.
